Glossary
What every forester service means
A consulting forester's listing shows the services the state register credits them with. A lot of it is industry shorthand. Here is what each one actually is, and when you as a landowner would need it. None of these are ranks or awards, and nobody pays to carry one.
Knowing what you have, and what it is worth
The first questions before any sale: how much timber is really out there, and what is it worth in dollars.
Timber Cruise & Volume Estimate
A field measurement of your standing trees — their species, sizes, and quality — that adds up to how much wood you actually have.
When you would need it: Before you sell, so you go in knowing roughly what is out there rather than taking a buyer's word for it.
Timber Appraisal
An estimate of what your standing timber is worth in dollars, based on how much there is, its quality, and current prices.
When you would need it: When you are selling, settling an estate, dividing property, or need a value for taxes or insurance.
Selling your timber
Getting the timber to market and getting a fair price, with someone on your side of the deal.
Timber Sale & Contract Administration
Running the sale for you: advertising the timber, taking bids, writing the contract, and overseeing the logging so the agreed terms are met.
When you would need it: When you want someone on your side handling the whole sale rather than dealing with buyers and loggers yourself.
Timber Sales
Handling the actual sale of your standing timber — finding buyers, getting competitive prices, and closing the deal.
When you would need it: When you are ready to sell and want help getting a fair price rather than selling to the first buyer who knocks.
Timber Marking
Physically marking — usually with paint — the exact trees to be cut in a harvest, so the logger takes those and leaves the rest.
When you would need it: Before a selective harvest, when you want tight control over exactly which trees leave your woods.
Utilization & Marketing
Helping you get the most from what you sell by matching each product — sawlogs, pulpwood, poles — to the buyer who pays best for it.
When you would need it: When you want your timber sorted and sold into the right markets rather than all going out at one flat price.
Planning and improving your woods
The long game: a plan for the land, and the work that keeps it healthy and growing value.
Forest Management Plans & Mapping
A written long-term plan for your woodland, usually with maps of what grows where, that lays out what to cut, plant, or leave and when.
When you would need it: When you want a roadmap for your land instead of one-off decisions, or a plan is required to enter a tax or cost-share program.
Stewardship Plans
A specific kind of management plan, often tied to a state or federal program, that covers your timber along with soil, water, wildlife, and recreation.
When you would need it: When you want a well-rounded plan for the whole property, or one is needed to qualify for a stewardship or cost-share program.
Timber Stand Improvement
Work that improves the trees you are keeping — thinning crowded areas and removing poor or damaged trees so the best ones grow faster.
When you would need it: When your woods are overcrowded or full of low-value trees and you want a healthier, more valuable stand down the road.
Reforestation
Getting a new stand of trees started after a harvest or on open ground, by planting seedlings or managing natural regrowth.
When you would need it: After you have harvested, or when you want to put bare or marginal land back into trees.
Prescribed Burning
A planned, controlled fire set under safe conditions to clear brush, cut wildfire fuel, and improve wildlife habitat.
When you would need it: When your woods have heavy undergrowth, you are managing for pine or wildlife, or you want to lower the risk of a severe wildfire.
Herbicide Application
Targeted spraying to knock back weeds, brush, and unwanted trees that compete with the trees you want.
When you would need it: When new seedlings are being crowded out, or before planting to give a new stand a clean start.
Logging Engineering
Planning the practical side of a harvest — where roads, trails, and loading areas go so timber comes out efficiently and the land is protected.
When you would need it: When your property is steep, wet, or hard to reach and the harvest has to be laid out carefully to avoid damage.
Wildlife, recreation, and tree health
Making your land good for the animals, good to spend time on, and safe from pests and fire.
Wildlife Management
Shaping your woods to support the animals you care about — deer, turkey, quail, songbirds — through planting, thinning, and habitat work.
When you would need it: When you hunt, watch wildlife, or simply want your land to be good habitat as well as good timber.
Recreation Management
Setting up and maintaining your land for uses like hunting, hiking, camping, trails, or food plots.
When you would need it: When you want to enjoy your property or lease it for recreation, not only grow timber on it.
Insect, Disease & Fire Protection
Spotting and dealing with threats to your trees — bark beetles, disease, and wildfire risk — before they spread.
When you would need it: When you notice dying or discolored trees, or want to cut the chance of a pest or fire wiping out years of growth.
Land, boundaries, and the legal side
Property lines, wetlands, taxes, and buying or selling the land itself.
Forest Real Estate
Help buying or selling forestland itself — valuing the land and the timber on it together, and handling the sale.
When you would need it: When you are buying or selling wooded property and want someone who knows what the standing timber is worth, not just the acreage.
Boundary Line Maintenance
Finding, marking, and keeping up your property lines — painting, blazing, and clearing them so everyone knows where your land ends.
When you would need it: When your lines are grown over or unclear, especially before a harvest so the logging stays on your side of the line.
Surveying
Precisely locating and mapping your property lines and features, usually done by a licensed surveyor.
When you would need it: When your boundaries are unclear or disputed, or you need an exact map before a sale, harvest, or subdivision.
Wetland Delineation
Identifying and marking the boundaries of wetlands on your property — areas that are regulated and limit what work can be done.
When you would need it: Before harvesting, building, or clearing near wet ground, so you stay within the rules and avoid fines.
Environmental Impact Statements
A formal report on how a proposed project would affect the land, water, and wildlife around it.
When you would need it: When a project on or near your land triggers a government review and a documented environmental assessment is required.
Forest Taxation
Advice on the tax side of owning and selling timber — property-tax programs for forestland, and how a timber sale is taxed as income.
When you would need it: When you are enrolling in a forest tax program, selling timber, or want to avoid overpaying tax on a sale.
More services
Other work a consulting forester may offer.
Urban Forestry
Care and planning for trees in yards, towns, and developed areas rather than working woodland.
When you would need it: When you have valuable yard or neighborhood trees, or land near town that needs tree care rather than timber management.
Christmas Tree Management
Growing and caring for trees raised to be sold as Christmas trees, including shearing and pest control.
When you would need it: When you run, or want to start, a Christmas tree operation on your land.
These explanations describe the services themselves, in plain terms. They are not claims about any particular firm. What a given forester offers comes from the state register and that firm's own listing, and there is a link on every listing page to correct anything that looks wrong.
