Timber prices for Escambia County

No county publishes its own timber prices. These are Alabama's published stumpage prices, what landowners are paid for standing timber, and the best public guide to what timber in Escambia County is bringing. Your own timber can sell above or below them. Alabama publishes no free, maintained timber price series of its own, and Timber Mart-South's Alabama report is paid, so there is no Alabama-only figure to quote. The range above is not an Alabama number: it is the range a regional report gave for Tennessee, South Carolina and Alabama together in Q4 2025, and only for pine sawtimber. Treat it as a rough regional marker, not as your county's price.

Sawmill

Swift Lumber Inc is a sawmill and lumber business at 1450 Swift Mill Rd in Atmore, Alabama. It produces kiln dried, full rough sawn Southern Yellow Pine and sells it wholesale to builders, distributors and industrial projects. The company was formed in 1955, when George Robinson Swift Jr. and John Byard Swift Jr. bought the business from Robin Swift Sr. The Swift family has been in lumber for over 100 years. The mill's early history includes a 1920 agreement with a Monroe County landowner to cut standing timber in the Atmore area. The work is softwood, and the only species named is Southern Yellow Pine. Lumber is pulled in four grades: Prime and Better, Heart, #2 Caribbean and #3. The mill runs a Maspell Thermal Kiln, so it can thermally modify its own lumber or yours. It serves Escambia County. Its products page calls the wood "Nature's Finest Lumber." It suits a landowner whose Southern Yellow Pine is already cut, or who wants lumber kiln dried or thermally modified, more than one who is looking for a buyer to cut standing timber. Questions landowners ask

How many timber buyers and foresters serve Escambia County?

8 businesses are listed for Escambia County: 0 consulting foresters and 8 buyers, loggers and mills. 7 of them have offices in the county.

How much is my timber worth in Escambia County?

Nobody can tell you what your timber is worth without walking it. Value depends on the species, the size and grade of the trees, how thickly they stand, the ground conditions and how easily a logger can reach them. Anyone who quotes you a figure without seeing the land is guessing, and a guess in that direction is rarely in your favour.

Do I need a forestry consultant to sell timber in Escambia County?

You do not have to use one. A consulting forester works for you rather than the buyer, marks the timber, runs a sealed-bid sale and typically charges a percentage of the sale. Research from several state extension services has found that timber sold through a consultant often returns enough more to cover the fee, though results vary by tract and by market. The decision usually turns on the size of the sale and whether you have sold timber before.

Do I need a permit to cut timber in Alabama?

Alabama requires no state permit to harvest timber on your own land, but it does require a NOTICE, and the notice is state law rather than a county's own idea. Before timber is hauled out over county roads, the timber owner tells the county commission's regular office: four business days ahead where the harvest needs a new access point onto the road, two where it uses one that already exists. In exchange the statute closes the door on anything further — a county may not demand a second notice, a permit or licence, or a bond or other security as the price of using its roads. Separately, Alabama's forestry Best Management Practices are not a permit programme, but they are not merely advisory either: the Department of Environmental Management inspects forestry operations and will require BMPs where voluntary use falls short, because the water-quality law behind them is enforceable.

What is timber worth in Escambia County?

No price series is published for Escambia County on its own. Alabama's latest published stumpage figures (Southern Ag Today (from Timber Mart-South), Q4 2025) put pine sawtimber at $17–$21 per ton. What your own timber brings depends on the species, the size and amount of it, and how far it is from a mill. A timber cruise by a forester settles it.
