Timber prices for Lauderdale County

No county publishes its own timber prices. These are Alabama's published stumpage prices, what landowners are paid for standing timber, and the best public guide to what timber in Lauderdale County is bringing. Your own timber can sell above or below them. Alabama publishes no free, maintained timber price series of its own, and Timber Mart-South's Alabama report is paid, so there is no Alabama-only figure to quote. The range above is not an Alabama number: it is the range a regional report gave for Tennessee, South Carolina and Alabama together in Q4 2025, and only for pine sawtimber. Treat it as a rough regional marker, not as your county's price.

Before you take the first offer

A timber buyer's job is to buy your timber as cheaply as they can. A consulting forester works for you — they measure what's standing, tell you what it's worth, and run a competitive sale, usually for a percentage of the price. That makes their interests line up with yours. 3 of the 3 foresters covering Lauderdale County offer the full set — appraisal, cruise, and running the sale itself. How to decide whether you need one

Forest Management Specialists, Inc. is a forestry consulting firm in Florence, Alabama, serving forest landowners in the Mid-South region since 1996. The firm acts as the landowner's agent in managing trees and other forest resources. It does not buy standing timber, and it says this is to avoid conflicts of interest. The work covers pine and hardwood. Timber sale coordination is the main service, whether it's a pine thinning, a hardwood select harvest, or a final harvest. The firm says it knows local harvesting conditions, markets and buyers, and "level the playing field" when selling timber. It also says this has helped it get prices up to three times what some landowners got on their own. Other services include timber appraisals for tax basis, timber theft cases, property purchases, or estate planning, plus forest management plans, thinning and reforestation coordination, prescribed burning, forest inventory, and GIS mapping. A job runs in three steps. Registered Foresters write the prescription. The firm then arranges the work with vendors and writes the contracts from the landowner's side. Afterward, staff visit the site to check that the contract is being followed. Founder Billy Rye is a native of Detroit, Alabama, with a forestry degree from Mississippi State University. He spent eight years with the Alabama Forestry Commission's Northwest District before starting the company in June 1996. His credentials include Registered Forester in Alabama and Mississippi, Real Estate Broker in Alabama, and certifications as a Burning Prescriptionist, TREASURE Forest Inspector, and Tree Farm Qualified Inspector. The firm works in Lauderdale County and says it has assisted clients in 86 counties across five states. This suits a landowner who wants someone on their side of the sale and would rather not have a timber buyer advising them too. From fmsforestry.com, read 17 October 2026.

Complete Tree Service is a tree and land clearing business based in Rogersville, Alabama. It has worked since 1994 and serves Lauderdale County, West Limestone County, Lawrence County, and South Tennessee, including the towns of Lexington, Florence, Athens, Killen, Town Creek, and Courtland. The main work is tree removal, stump removal and grinding, lot clearing, trimming, tree topping, and storm damage cleanup, with emergency service around the clock. For larger wooded ground, the business offers forestry mulching, which grinds trees, brush, saplings, and vines into mulch. That removes the need for burning or hauling debris away. The listed uses include hunting land improvements, trail creation, fence row clearing, pasture restoration, and food plots. The crew works with its own Bobcat and crane. Every job is looked at on its own, and the business will "develop a clearing plan based on your goals and the condition of the land." It suits a landowner who wants wooded or overgrown ground cleared for a building site, pasture, or hunting plot, or who needs storm damage cleaned up quickly. Questions landowners ask

How many timber buyers and foresters serve Lauderdale County?

7 businesses are listed for Lauderdale County: 3 consulting foresters and 4 buyers, loggers and mills. 7 of them have offices in the county.

How much is my timber worth in Lauderdale County?

Nobody can tell you what your timber is worth without walking it. Value depends on the species, the size and grade of the trees, how thickly they stand, the ground conditions and how easily a logger can reach them. Anyone who quotes you a figure without seeing the land is guessing, and a guess in that direction is rarely in your favour.

Do I need a forestry consultant to sell timber in Lauderdale County?

You do not have to use one. A consulting forester works for you rather than the buyer, marks the timber, runs a sealed-bid sale and typically charges a percentage of the sale. Research from several state extension services has found that timber sold through a consultant often returns enough more to cover the fee, though results vary by tract and by market. The decision usually turns on the size of the sale and whether you have sold timber before.

Do I need a permit to cut timber in Alabama?

Alabama requires no state permit to harvest timber on your own land, but it does require a NOTICE, and the notice is state law rather than a county's own idea. Before timber is hauled out over county roads, the timber owner tells the county commission's regular office: four business days ahead where the harvest needs a new access point onto the road, two where it uses one that already exists. In exchange the statute closes the door on anything further — a county may not demand a second notice, a permit or licence, or a bond or other security as the price of using its roads. Separately, Alabama's forestry Best Management Practices are not a permit programme, but they are not merely advisory either: the Department of Environmental Management inspects forestry operations and will require BMPs where voluntary use falls short, because the water-quality law behind them is enforceable.

What is timber worth in Lauderdale County?

No price series is published for Lauderdale County on its own. Alabama's latest published stumpage figures (Southern Ag Today (from Timber Mart-South), Q4 2025) put pine sawtimber at $17–$21 per ton. What your own timber brings depends on the species, the size and amount of it, and how far it is from a mill. A timber cruise by a forester settles it.

Forester listings for Lauderdale County come from the Alabama Forestry Commission service provider directory, revised 21-Sep-26. The register is updated quarterly.
