Timber prices for Washington County

No county publishes its own timber prices. These are Alabama's published stumpage prices, what landowners are paid for standing timber, and the best public guide to what timber in Washington County is bringing. Your own timber can sell above or below them. Alabama publishes no free, maintained timber price series of its own, and Timber Mart-South's Alabama report is paid, so there is no Alabama-only figure to quote. The range above is not an Alabama number: it is the range a regional report gave for Tennessee, South Carolina and Alabama together in Q4 2025, and only for pine sawtimber. Treat it as a rough regional marker, not as your county's price.

Sawmill

Lassiter Lumber is a sawmill in the community of Cullomburg, in Choctaw County, Alabama. Its street address is in Silas. The company is now Lassiter Lumber, LLC, formerly J.W. Lassiter Lumber Co., Inc., and it has been manufacturing Southern Yellow Pine lumber since the company was founded in 1912. It buys logs and turns them into lumber at a plant with a sawmill, a planer mill, three dry kilns and a boiler. For a landowner, the timber side is what matters. The business lists purchasing quality logs and Timber Procurement among its services, along with a Procurement Forester. Bobo Brownlee handles timber procurement, and Noah Hammond is the procurement forester. Brad Farley is listed for sales. The mill sells its lumber both rough and dressed, on the export and domestic markets, and its history page says it produces about 80,000 board feet of pine a day. The mill says its product is "second to none." The mill was bought in December 2013 by Tim Farley of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and now operates as Lassiter Lumber, LLC. This suits a landowner with Southern Yellow Pine logs in Choctaw County who wants to sell to a mill that buys logs directly and has been running since 1912. Sawmill

Linden Lumber Company Inc is a sawmill in Leroy, Alabama, in Washington County. It saws hardwood. The mill started as a small sawmill in 1963 and now cuts four species: red oak, white oak, white ash and yellow poplar. The mill calls red oak its "heart and soul," and says it has a tradition of taking a few small things and doing them right. The timber side runs under the name Majestic Timber, the mill's timber division and its exclusive timber supplier. Its main office is at 23741 US Hwy 43 in Linden, Alabama, and the telephone is (334) 295-2314. Alan Lewis leads it. He is the son of Wayne Lewis, who managed the mill's timber buying in its early years. Majestic Timber says it harvests timber, manages land for the long term for families and trusts, and gives advice on when to cut and on select cuttings in timber tracts "to maximize growth and profits." Alan and his team say they have harvested hardwood and softwood across the Southeast. The firm says it works with corporate and individual landowners, with trustees who want to sell timber, and with manufacturers looking for wood. Its timber buyers can be called directly. Questions landowners ask

How many timber buyers and foresters serve Washington County?

5 businesses are listed for Washington County: 1 consulting forester and 4 buyers, loggers and mills. 5 of them have offices in the county.

How much is my timber worth in Washington County?

Nobody can tell you what your timber is worth without walking it. Value depends on the species, the size and grade of the trees, how thickly they stand, the ground conditions and how easily a logger can reach them. Anyone who quotes you a figure without seeing the land is guessing, and a guess in that direction is rarely in your favour.

Do I need a forestry consultant to sell timber in Washington County?

You do not have to use one. A consulting forester works for you rather than the buyer, marks the timber, runs a sealed-bid sale and typically charges a percentage of the sale. Research from several state extension services has found that timber sold through a consultant often returns enough more to cover the fee, though results vary by tract and by market. The decision usually turns on the size of the sale and whether you have sold timber before.

Do I need a permit to cut timber in Alabama?

Alabama requires no state permit to harvest timber on your own land, but it does require a NOTICE, and the notice is state law rather than a county's own idea. Before timber is hauled out over county roads, the timber owner tells the county commission's regular office: four business days ahead where the harvest needs a new access point onto the road, two where it uses one that already exists. In exchange the statute closes the door on anything further — a county may not demand a second notice, a permit or licence, or a bond or other security as the price of using its roads. Separately, Alabama's forestry Best Management Practices are not a permit programme, but they are not merely advisory either: the Department of Environmental Management inspects forestry operations and will require BMPs where voluntary use falls short, because the water-quality law behind them is enforceable.

What is timber worth in Washington County?

No price series is published for Washington County on its own. Alabama's latest published stumpage figures (Southern Ag Today (from Timber Mart-South), Q4 2025) put pine sawtimber at $17–$21 per ton. What your own timber brings depends on the species, the size and amount of it, and how far it is from a mill. A timber cruise by a forester settles it.
