ROUGH CUT LUMBERSLABS & LIVE EDGEBEVEL SIDINGPICKUP/DELIVERYSTORAGE

Girdwood Milling is a sawmill in Girdwood, Alaska. It's locally owned and serves the Girdwood Valley, in Anchorage Municipality. The work here is custom milling, turning trees from your own property into lumber for whatever you're building. They offer rough cut lumber, slabs and live edge pieces, and bevel siding. They also handle pickup and delivery, and can store material for you. They keep a limited inventory on hand, but most jobs are "cut to order," so what you get is made for your particular logs. They describe themselves as proud to give the Valley "the option to turn trees you from your property into valuable lumber," which is the whole idea of the place: you bring the trees, they turn them into something you can use. No species, licences, or years in business are mentioned, so go by what they show you when you call. This fits a landowner in the Girdwood Valley who already has logs down, or standing trees they plan to take down, and wants them milled into lumber close to home rather than shipped out for someone else to process. Knothead Works Co. is a sawmill in Fairbanks, Alaska. They mill logs into rough cut lumber, take in custom orders from other people's logs, and occasionally mill material to build their own projects. If you have logs, you haul them to the yard in Fox and bring a cut list of what you want. They can handle anywhere from 1 to 100 logs at a time, cut from 3 feet up to 24 feet long. Logs need to be at least 3 feet long and 6 inches across to be worth milling. Most of their lumber is White Spruce, with some Birch, and occasionally Cottonwood, Chokecherry, or Tamarack. They don't keep lumber in stock, so every order is custom cut and sold green. They also offer portable sawing around the Fairbanks and North Pole area, and will talk through jobs farther out. On top of milling, they sell firewood, including dry bundles at a roadside stand, and sometimes slabwood. Their farrier work books are currently full and they are not taking new horses. There's no stated minimum tract size. The smallest job they describe is a single log, so this is a business set up to handle anything from one log to a full logging job's worth of material. This suits a landowner with just a few logs, or even one, who wants them sawn into lumber rather than sold as standing timber, and who can hssaul the wood to Fox or arrange portable sawing nearby. Icy Straits Lumber & Milling is a sawmill and woodworking shop in Hoonah, Alaska, on Chichagof Island, about 40 miles west of Juneau. It also keeps a showroom in Juneau. If you've got logs to turn into lumber, this is a mill to know about. They say they are "equipped to handle all sizes of logs that come from our geographical location," with a 56 inch headrig saw cutting up to 20 foot lengths, a Mighty Mite saw, a bandsaw for larger cants, a log splitter for oversized logs, edgers, a trimmer, and a planer. For finished work they run a dry kiln, a moulder, and both dry and air-dry storage buildings. Species mentioned are old growth timber and Alaska Hemlock Siding. The work they list includes log cabin materials, timbers and beams, timberframe structures, furniture, and pavilions, drawing on what they call "beautiful old growth, tight grained wood." Icy Straits Lumber & Milling serves the Hoonah-Angoon Census Area. Their project gallery shows cabins, houses, and structures built for owners around Hoonah, Juneau, Excursion Inlet, Shelter Island, and further afield. This fits a landowner in the Hoonah-Angoon area who has logs ready to be milled into cabin materials, timbers, furniture, or a timberframe structure, rather than someone looking for help selling standing timber or arranging a harvest. Questions landowners ask

How many mills are there in Alaska?

15 are listed on TimberClear, sourced from the Alaska forestry register, covering 5 counties between them.

How do I choose between them?

Start local and get more than one. A business based in your county knows the mills and the ground; one registered for all one hundred counties may be three hours away. Every listing here shows how far its office is from the county you are looking at, so "will travel" is never mistaken for "is local". TimberClear has not vetted, verified or endorsed anybody on this site.
