Decatur, GA

Atlantic Fine Woods is a mill and woodworking shop in Decatur, Georgia, in DeKalb County. Its address on Foster Street is in Atlanta, and its pages say the wood comes from Atlanta's urban trees. The business salvages, mills, dries and builds with that wood, and it sells slabs and furniture. The work starts with the trees. "We carefully rescue logs headed to landfills," the business says, and it selects trees approved for removal because of disease, damage or development. The logs are cut on site at its own sawmill, where live edge slabs are milled by hand. The wood is then dried in its own kilns, which it says use a fraction of the energy of traditional kilns. The shop makes custom tables, desks, shelves and cabinets, along with epoxy dining tables and live edge countertops. Species on its register entry include red oak, white oak, yellow-poplar, black walnut, cherry, sweetgum, hickory, maple and sycamore. Its website also names pecan, pear and poplar. Visits are by appointment, Tuesday to Friday from noon to 6pm and Saturday from 11am to 6pm. It suits a landowner near Atlanta or in DeKalb County whose trees are coming down for disease, damage or development and who wants the wood milled and kiln dried into slabs or furniture. Questions landowners ask

How many timber buyers and foresters serve DeKalb County?

5 businesses are listed for DeKalb County: 0 consulting foresters and 5 buyers, loggers and mills. 3 of them have offices in the county.

How much is my timber worth in DeKalb County?

Nobody can tell you what your timber is worth without walking it. Value depends on the species, the size and grade of the trees, how thickly they stand, the ground conditions and how easily a logger can reach them. University of Georgia Extension publishes an annual timber situation and outlook report with recent quarterly figures, which tells you what the market is doing, not what your tract holds. Anyone who quotes you a figure without seeing the land is guessing, and a guess in that direction is rarely in your favour.

Do I need a forestry consultant to sell timber in DeKalb County?

You do not have to use one. A consulting forester works for you rather than the buyer, marks the timber, runs a sealed-bid sale and typically charges a percentage of the sale. Research from several state extension services has found that timber sold through a consultant often returns enough more to cover the fee, though results vary by tract and by market. The decision usually turns on the size of the sale and whether you have sold timber before.

Do I need a permit to cut timber in Georgia?

Georgia has no statewide permit for cutting timber on your own land, and state law forbids a county to require one or to charge a fee for a timber harvest notification. What a county may require is the notification itself: where its ordinance calls for one, the harvester files it before entering the property if possible and no later than 24 hours after entering, and the county may ask for a bond of up to $5,000 against damage to its roads. Not every county has an ordinance, so check with yours before work starts. Georgia's Best Management Practices are not a permit programme, but following them is how a harvest stays clear of the water-quality law that is enforceable.

What is timber worth in DeKalb County?

No price series is published for DeKalb County on its own. Georgia's latest published stumpage figures (University of Georgia Extension, Q3 2025) put mixed hardwood sawtimber at $26–$32 per ton. What your own timber brings depends on the species, the size and amount of it, and how far it is from a mill. A timber cruise by a forester settles it.
