Vail Wood Products LLC is a sawmill in Butler, Indiana, run by Brady Vail since 2024. If you've got logs on your property and want them turned into something useful, this is a mill that cuts to order rather than selling you whatever's sitting on the shelf. They run a Wood-Mizer LX250 bandsaw mill that handles logs up to 55 inches across and cuts up to 54-1/2 inches wide, so even a big walnut or oak log isn't a problem. They mill more than 28 species, hardwoods like black walnut, white oak, black cherry, hickory, and ash, plus a handful of softwoods like white pine and cedar. Work includes custom milling, live-edge slabs, rough-sawn lumber and timbers, firewood, and kiln drying with a solar kiln. If your log is too big or valuable to haul, they'll bring a portable Alaskan sawmill to your property instead. You call, describe the project, drop off your log or schedule a site visit, and they cut it, usually in 1 to 3 days for simple jobs. There's no set minimum: "There is no set minimum order. We work with customers on projects of all sizes." They're based in DeKalb County and work out from there across Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio, though most lumber and slab customers pick up at the mill itself. Brady's background is in logging and tree work before starting the mill. This one suits a landowner with a log or two to turn into lumber, slabs, or firewood, rather than someone trying to sell standing timber off a larger tract. How much is my timber worth in DeKalb County?

Nobody can tell you what your timber is worth without walking it. Value depends on the species, the size and grade of the trees, how thickly they stand, the ground conditions and how easily a logger can reach them. Anyone who quotes you a figure without seeing the land is guessing, and a guess in that direction is rarely in your favour.

Do I need a forestry consultant to sell timber in DeKalb County?

You do not have to use one. A consulting forester works for you rather than the buyer, marks the timber, runs a sealed-bid sale and typically charges a percentage of the sale. Research from several state extension services has found that timber sold through a consultant often returns enough more to cover the fee, though results vary by tract and by market. The decision usually turns on the size of the sale and whether you have sold timber before.
