River City Hardwoods is a sawmill in Muscatine, Iowa, on Musser Street. It was founded by Patrick T. Mealy and John T. Peters in 1995. River City Hardwoods is "a grade sawmill specializing in thick stock hardwoods including soft maple, walnut, cherry, white hard maple and red and white oak," and it also cuts ash, basswood, birch, catalpa, aromatic cedar, cottonwood, hickory and poplar. The work here is lumber production and sales, not standing timber purchases or logging jobs on a landowner's property. River City Hardwoods sells green wholesale lumber, kiln dried wholesale lumber, kiln dried local distribution lumber, wholesale chips, sawdust and mulch, and retail kiln dried lumber. It also sells retail sawdust and bark mulch by the cubic yard, and offers "Quality Kiln Dried and Green Lumber available at Competitive Pricing" for walk-in and wholesale buyers. Payment for retail purchases is expected at time of sale, in cash for sawdust and mulch, with cards accepted elsewhere with a surcharge. It serves Muscatine County. No service for standing timber sales, harvest planning, or landowner tract work is described, so this isn't a fit for someone looking to sell logs off their own acreage. It suits a landowner who already has logs cut, or who wants hardwood lumber, mulch, or sawdust bought directly from a mill, rather than someone trying to arrange a timber sale on their land. How much is my timber worth in Muscatine County?

Nobody can tell you what your timber is worth without walking it. Value depends on the species, the size and grade of the trees, how thickly they stand, the ground conditions and how easily a logger can reach them. Anyone who quotes you a figure without seeing the land is guessing, and a guess in that direction is rarely in your favour.

Do I need a forestry consultant to sell timber in Muscatine County?

You do not have to use one. A consulting forester works for you rather than the buyer, marks the timber, runs a sealed-bid sale and typically charges a percentage of the sale. Research from several state extension services has found that timber sold through a consultant often returns enough more to cover the fee, though results vary by tract and by market. The decision usually turns on the size of the sale and whether you have sold timber before.
