Mt Taylor Machine LLC runs a sawmill in Milan, New Mexico, just outside Grants, operating as Mt. Taylor Manufacturing. It is not a place to call about a one-time timber sale on your own land. The mill only takes logs from "high-risk fire-prone forest restoration projects," selected to help restore forest and watershed health, and it serves Cibola County. The species that come through are Ponderosa Pine and a hardwood blend. Beyond milling, the operation covers custom cutting, cants and beams, precision machining, welding and industrial repair, custom fabrication, installation work, and a clean wood grinding service. On the sawmill side, they run a double cut band mill and double scragg mills, able to cut standard sizes fast or custom sizes to order, with logs up to 30 feet long" when large stock is on hand. Cants and beams come in sizes from 4x4 up to 8x12, all rough green, not kiln dried. Pricing moves with market conditions, demand, and size, and they take cash, credit, debit, or set up credit accounts for returning customers. They hold IPEMA certification for their engineered wood fiber playground chip product. This fits a landowner whose trees are coming out as part of a forest restoration or fire-mitigation project in the Cibola National Forest area, not someone with a standard private timber harvest to sell. If your logs fit that restoration category, Mt Taylor Machine LLC is set up to process them into lumber, mulch, pellets, and other wood products on site. How much is my timber worth in Cibola County?

Nobody can tell you what your timber is worth without walking it. Value depends on the species, the size and grade of the trees, how thickly they stand, the ground conditions and how easily a logger can reach them. Anyone who quotes you a figure without seeing the land is guessing, and a guess in that direction is rarely in your favour.

Do I need a forestry consultant to sell timber in Cibola County?

You do not have to use one. A consulting forester works for you rather than the buyer, marks the timber, runs a sealed-bid sale and typically charges a percentage of the sale. Research from several state extension services has found that timber sold through a consultant often returns enough more to cover the fee, though results vary by tract and by market. The decision usually turns on the size of the sale and whether you have sold timber before.
