We cut to order for you!firewood year round

Olguin's Sawmill & Firewood is a custom sawmill in Taos, New Mexico, with its mailing address in El Prado. It's a family business, now in its third generation, and it has been "serving the building industry for over 40 years." This isn't a timber-buying or logging outfit. Olguin's mills logs into lumber, beams, vigas, and corbels, and sells fencing material and firewood year round. They work with the four species that come out of the northern New Mexico woods: Ponderosa Pine, Spruce, and White and Red (Douglas) Fir. If you've already got logs down, or trees you plan to have cut, they'll "cut to order for you," and they keep common lumber sizes in stock for the building trade and the surrounding community. They serve Taos County. There's no mention of them buying standing timber or doing the harvesting themselves, so this is a mill to call once wood is ready to be sawn, not a service to walk your land and mark trees. This fits a landowner in or near Taos County who already has logs, or who wants local lumber, beams, or firewood made from their own timber, rather than someone looking for help selling standing trees or arranging a logging job. How much is my timber worth in Taos County?

Nobody can tell you what your timber is worth without walking it. Value depends on the species, the size and grade of the trees, how thickly they stand, the ground conditions and how easily a logger can reach them. Anyone who quotes you a figure without seeing the land is guessing, and a guess in that direction is rarely in your favour.

Do I need a forestry consultant to sell timber in Taos County?

You do not have to use one. A consulting forester works for you rather than the buyer, marks the timber, runs a sealed-bid sale and typically charges a percentage of the sale. Research from several state extension services has found that timber sold through a consultant often returns enough more to cover the fee, though results vary by tract and by market. The decision usually turns on the size of the sale and whether you have sold timber before.
