Not sure what your timber is worth?

Four questions and you get a ballpark range. No email needed to see it.

Before you take the first offer

A timber buyer's job is to buy your timber as cheaply as they can. A consulting forester works for you — they measure what's standing, tell you what it's worth, and run a competitive sale, usually for a percentage of the price. That makes their interests line up with yours. 13 of the 16 foresters covering Middlesex County offer the full set — appraisal, cruise, and running the sale itself. How to decide whether you need one

It lists Virginia counties it serves, among them Chesterfield, Henrico, Powhatan, Louisa, Essex and York. On the timber side, it does timber cruising and appraisals, timber marking, and timber sale contract preparation and administration. Its foresters also hold registrations in North Carolina and South Carolina, and the firm belongs to the Association of Consulting Foresters and the Society of American Foresters. Three Rivers Forestry LLC is a consulting forestry firm in Tappahannock, Virginia. John C. Magruder founded it in February 1998, and it serves public and private landowners across eastern Virginia. Their own words are "Turn your forest into income while meeting your management goals." The counties they list include Caroline, Essex, Gloucester, Hanover, Lancaster, Middlesex, Richmond and Westmoreland, among others. They offer forest management plans, timberland evaluations, timber cruising, thinning, reforestation, prescribed burning, drone and mapping, and custom sawmilling, and they list harvesting as well. On a timber sale they handle courthouse research, mapping, cruising, marking and harvest supervision. Sales go to over 100 potential buyers, who have two to three weeks to submit sealed bids, and the winning buyer must close within 30 days. The first consultation is often free. Their timber sale pay is commission-based, and the cruise cost is included in that commission if the timber sells, "keeping our success tied directly to yours." The smallest tract they show work on is the 10-acre S.B Baird job. That is a past job, not a stated minimum. They list affiliations with ACF, DOF, SAF, Tree Farm, VFA and VLA, and they describe their role as consulting forester under Virginia state code. It suits a landowner who wants one firm to run the whole timber sale, from courthouse research to harvest supervision, paid by commission. From trfva.com, read 23 October 2026.

Forest Resources Management Inc is a forestry consulting firm based in Aylett, Virginia. It works with private and public landowners across eastern and central Virginia, and its pages name Amelia, Charles City, Caroline, Essex, and King and Queen counties. Frank O. Brooks, Jr. founded it in the mid 1980s, and it has helped landowners for over 40 years. Its services include timber sales, timber valuation, real estate appraisals, real estate sales, long-term forest management, timberland investment analysis, forest taxation, GIS mapping, reforestation, and prescribed burning. The only tree type named on its pages is pine plantation thinnings. In 2024 it handled clear cut and select cut sales on over 1,400 acres. A timber sale can run start to finish. The firm offers a "turn key" sale that begins with the timber appraisal and ends with complete reforestation of the tract. You can also have only certain parts of a sale done. It says it markets a tract to the buyers interested in that particular wood, often from outside the local area. John R. Reid, CF, is a Certified Forester and a Certified General Real Estate Appraiser. Bill Pownall holds a real estate salesperson license from 2018. Staff are certified by the Virginia Department of Forestry to write Forest Stewardship Plans, by the American Forest Foundation to prepare Tree Farm Plans, and by the Natural Resources Conservation Service to prepare Management Plans. The smallest job on its pages is the 16-acre Mitchell Tract in King and Queen County. That is the smallest tract shown, not a stated minimum. It suits a landowner in eastern or central Virginia who wants a sale handled from appraisal through replanting, or who needs help with just one part of it. From frmva.com, read 23 October 2026.

Forest Planning – Forest Stewardship Plan/Management Plan

Gibson Landworks LLC is a small, family owned business in Walkerton, Virginia. The business says it works with both private and commercial landowners, and a husband and wife team runs it. The register lists it under forestry consultants, and also under independent loggers and tree services. The business says it serves the Middle Peninsula, Tidewater and Northern Neck areas. Most of the work is clearing and site work. Services include forestry mulching, selective thinning, food plots, recreational shooting lanes, ATV, UTV and walking trails, easement and property line clearing, stump grinding, grading, power raking and brush removal. Mulching lays a bed of fine mulch on the ground. The business calls its approach "a cheaper alternative to massive equipment." The register also lists it for forest planning, specifically a Forest Stewardship Plan or Management Plan. The counties and cities listed for service are Caroline, Charles City, Chesterfield, Culpeper, Essex, Gloucester, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, James City, King and Queen, King George, King William, Lancaster, Louisa, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, Newport News City, Powhatan, Rappahannock, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Westmoreland, Williamsburg City and York. This suits a landowner in one of those places who wants brush and overgrowth cleared, trails or food plots cut, or a forest plan written. From gibsonlandworks.com, read 23 October 2026.

Timber Marketing & Management is a timber consulting firm in Chesterfield, Virginia, with an office on Iron Bridge Road. It works for private landowners who want to sell timber, manage their woods, or sell the land itself. The firm has been at it for over 40 years. The work covers timber sales by bid or open market, timber cruises, forest management, post-harvest services, boundary line maintenance, and land sales. A sale usually starts with a talk about what you want from the property. Next comes field work: inventory, mapping, and appraisal. The firm then markets the timber, takes bids or negotiates, and handles the contracts and payment. It oversees the harvest and, if you want, the replanting. Inventories are careful and often include 100% tallies of sawtimber. From first consultation to reforestation usually takes about two years. Most services are paid by a flat commission, and extra work is charged by the man-day. They serve most of Virginia, from the Eastern Shore to the Blue Ridge Mountains, and further for certain properties. Their rule of thumb is 20 acres or more, since they focus on commercial harvests. They will take on smaller tracts too, depending on several factors. They are clear about one thing: "We do not manage or harvest individual trees/yard trees." They also manage hunting leases on request. This suits a landowner with 20 acres or more who wants a full handoff from cruise to closeout and is comfortable paying on commission. Canal Wood LLC is a timber buying and logging business based in Ladysmith, Virginia. Its headquarters is in Conway, South Carolina, and its own pages describe it as the largest independent timber merchant in the Southeast, founded in 1937. Timber buying is its main trade, with logging and forestry consulting alongside. The work covers timber marketing and management, harvesting, inspections, mapping, appraisals and harvest planning. Aerial and infrared photography is used to identify tree species. The company also lists forest road construction and maintenance, timber marking, and timber sale contract preparation and administration. Its species list covers veneer logs, sawtimber, chip-n-saw, pulpwood, fuel chips and bottomland hardwoods, along with pine plantations and mixed hardwood and pine stands. It says it has "over 100 timber buyers on staff," and that it is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). A sale starts with a consultation, where a stand is assessed and your goals are understood. The timber is then marketed to find prices, and the company harvests and transports it to the mills. Its contact form asks for a property of at least 10 acres. Its Virginia counties include Caroline, Chesterfield, Hanover, Henrico, Prince William and Stafford, among others. It suits a Virginia landowner with at least 10 acres of timber who wants buying, harvest planning and contract handling from one firm. From canalwood.com, read 3 October 2026.

F&P Enterprises, Inc. is a logging business in Blackstone, Virginia. Its timber harvesting is done through F&P, and its timber buying and sawmill work is under the Pembelton Forest Products Inc. name. Pembelton was established in 2001 as a family-operated company in Blackstone. The species named are red and white oak, poplar and other hardwoods. Harvesting is listed for tracts of less than 15 acres. Other work includes timber stand improvement, land clearing, purchasing timber and land, and lumber sales with delivery. The mill is a band sawmill that can saw more than 15 million board feet a year, and they keep a "well-stocked yard" for their buyers. For a sale, qualified professionals evaluate the property and give a "fair analysis of the timber," then make an offer. Timber is cut by crews who follow timber harvesting guidelines. The counties they serve include Amelia, Chesterfield, Henrico, Halifax, Sussex, Surry and Lancaster, along with others in the listed area. This suits a landowner with hardwood on a tract of under 15 acres in one of the listed counties who wants one firm to look at the timber, make an offer and do the cutting. Timber Marking

Commercial Forest Products is a hardwood lumber business, founded in 2009 and described as family-owned. Its own pages place it in Upland, California, not Fontana, Virginia. They describe a supplier that mills and planes hardwood, sells lumber, and makes custom hardwood flooring, mouldings and components. They do not describe a company that buys standing timber, logs land, or works with landowners. The species on its pages include alder, red gum, cherry, maple, walnut, oak, mahogany, padauk, poplar, sassafras, Spanish cedar, limba and ash, along with several imported woods. It also sells roasted wood, which is hardwood heat-treated in a kiln so it holds steady in damp conditions. The business names guitar and instrument making, flooring and millwork as common uses. It states that it is a member of the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) and that it is willing to tackle tough wood projects. The Virginia details in this listing, the town of Fontana, the timber marking service and the Virginia county list, do not appear on the business's own pages, so they are unconfirmed. Do not rely on them for a timber sale, marking or logging job. Confirm the location and services directly with the business first. This suits a woodworker, builder or instrument maker looking for cut hardwood, not a landowner who wants someone to buy or log standing timber. Site work includes mowing, forestry mulching, boundary marking and invasive species control. Planting covers bareroot seedlings, container stock, Tubex tree shelters and Vispore weed mats, for both pine and hardwood. Maintenance includes survival checks and shelter removal. Shenandoah Habitat Services, LLC is a tree planting and habitat business in Fishersville, Virginia. It started in October 2019. The company describes itself as a one-stop shop for large-scale reforestation projects and natural resource management, and it also sells tree protection supplies. Most of the work is planting. Crews hand plant hardwood and pine, using bareroot seedlings, tubelings or container plants. The company also does native meadow establishment, live stake installation, mechanical site preparation, ground herbicide application, invasive species management, and wildlife habitat management. It sells traditional and degradable tree and shrub shelters, stakes and mats. Help runs from the first plan through installation and on-going maintenance. That includes project management, mowing, spot and strip spraying, stake maintenance, and removing bird netting and tree shelters. The company uses a seed drill built to be portable and maneuverable, and it says "we excel in small to mid-sizes projects." Counties it works in include Augusta, Albemarle, Rockingham and Fairfax. Stated credentials include a degree in Environmental Science and Biology from Ferrum College for David Coleman, and a forest ranger program for Jeff Brower, who later worked 15 years with the state Department of Forestry. Crews have planted thousands of acres of hardwood and conifer trees over the past thirty years, they say. This business suits a landowner who wants land replanted or turned into meadow, and who wants the same team to see the work through its maintenance years. Questions landowners ask

How many timber buyers and foresters serve Middlesex County?

24 businesses are listed for Middlesex County: 16 consulting foresters and 8 buyers, loggers and mills. 1 of them has an office in the county.

How much is my timber worth in Middlesex County?

Nobody can tell you what your timber is worth without walking it. Value depends on the species, the size and grade of the trees, how thickly they stand, the ground conditions and how easily a logger can reach them. Virginia Tech's Forest Landowner Education Program publishes quarterly Virginia timber stumpage prices, which tells you what the market is doing, not what your tract holds. Anyone who quotes you a figure without seeing the land is guessing, and a guess in that direction is rarely in your favour.

What stumpage value means →

Do I need a forestry consultant to sell timber in Middlesex County?

You do not have to use one. A consulting forester works for you rather than the buyer, marks the timber, runs a sealed-bid sale and typically charges a percentage of the sale. Research from several state extension services has found that timber sold through a consultant often returns enough more to cover the fee, though results vary by tract and by market. The decision usually turns on the size of the sale and whether you have sold timber before.

Do I need a forestry consultant? →

Do I need a permit to cut timber in Virginia?

Unlike some neighbouring states, Virginia does require you to notify the Department of Forestry before you start a commercial timber harvest — or within three working days after you begin — even on your own land. There is no approval to wait for, but failing to notify can bring a civil penalty. Water quality rules also apply, and following Best Management Practices is effectively required to stay protected under them.

Permit rules in Virginia →

What is timber worth in Middlesex County?

No price series is published for Middlesex County on its own. Virginia's latest published stumpage figures (Virginia Tech's Forest Landowner Education Program, Q2 2026) put hardwood sawtimber at $224 per thousand board feet. What your own timber brings depends on the species, the size and amount of it, and how far it is from a mill. A timber cruise by a forester settles it.

Forester listings for Middlesex County come from the Virginia Department of Forestry private forestry service provider directory, revised 16-Sep-26. The register is updated quarterly.
