Jeff's Portable Sawmill & Woodworks, LLC is a portable sawmill and woodworking shop in Evansville, Wisconsin. Jeff brings his Woodmizer sawmills and a chainsaw mill right to a landowner's property, so the tree doesn't have to travel to get cut. The work covers custom, portable sawmill services, woodworking and furniture projects, lumber drying, and custom cutting to a landowner's own specs. Jeff has worked with ash, silver maple, and pine, and he runs a kiln on site, loading it up and leaving it closed for a couple months at a time while lumber dries. He's milled wood for over 11 years, starting out in New Jersey, Colorado, and Idaho before settling into Wisconsin. The business serves Rock County. There's no stated minimum acreage, but one project on his own pages shows the smallest scale he's worked at: a single silver maple tree from the urban canopy of Madison, milled down and turned into four mission style tables for a family church. Jeff says he's "open to any and all projects and jobs," and that he takes special pride in "transforming a sentimental tree with a strong emotional or familial connection into a memorable project." This fits a landowner with just one or two meaningful trees down, maybe a backyard tree with family history, who wants it milled and turned into something to keep rather than sold off as timber. How much is my timber worth in Rock County?

Nobody can tell you what your timber is worth without walking it. Value depends on the species, the size and grade of the trees, how thickly they stand, the ground conditions and how easily a logger can reach them. Anyone who quotes you a figure without seeing the land is guessing, and a guess in that direction is rarely in your favour.

Do I need a forestry consultant to sell timber in Rock County?

You do not have to use one. A consulting forester works for you rather than the buyer, marks the timber, runs a sealed-bid sale and typically charges a percentage of the sale. Research from several state extension services has found that timber sold through a consultant often returns enough more to cover the fee, though results vary by tract and by market. The decision usually turns on the size of the sale and whether you have sold timber before.
