Murphy holds a bachelor's degree in biology from Georgia Southern University and a master's in forest resources from the University of Georgia. Timber consultation is $75 an hour. Its wildlife services include wildlife surveys, management plans, habitat assessments, food plot management, native habitat restoration, and integrated pest management. Evans, GA

Canal Wood LLC buys timber, runs logging jobs, and gives forestry advice to landowners. It is based in Evans, Georgia, in Columbia County, and its headquarters is in Conway, South Carolina. It has operated since 1937 and has more than 100 timber buyers working from field offices across South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. The work covers timber marketing and management, harvesting, forest management, inspections, mapping, aerial and satellite photography, infrared photography for tree species identification, appraisals, and harvest planning. It handles veneer logs, sawtimber, chip-n-saw, pulpwood, and fuel chips, on mixed hardwood and pine stands, pine plantations, and bottomland hardwoods. The usual route starts with a consultation and an assessment of each stand, then the company finds buyers for each type of timber, harvests it, and hauls it to the mills. It holds the Georgia Master Timber Harvester certification and is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. The smallest job it shows is the Maxton 510 Tract, 10.03 acres of mixed hardwood and pine, so about 10 acres is the smallest size its own work points to. It describes itself as a "single point of contact" for timber management and buying, which suits a landowner who wants one firm to assess the stands, market the timber, and arrange the cutting. It is a fit for a tract of 10 acres or more where the owner wants that full service rather than a logger alone. From canalwood.com, read 3 October 2026.

Grovetown, GA

Dobbs Equipment is an equipment dealer in Grovetown, Georgia, at 1900 William Few Parkway. It sells, rents, finances and services John Deere and Wirtgen Group machines. It does not buy timber or do logging, so if you want someone to cut and haul your trees, look elsewhere. The business calls itself a "full-service John Deere and Wirtgen Group dealership," with 29 locations across Florida, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina. The Grovetown location serves Columbia County. For forestry work, it lists John Deere forwarders, skidders, wheeled and tracked harvesters, feller bunchers and knuckleboom loaders, along with Waratah harvester heads. You can buy or finance a machine, or rent one for a single job, and some rent payments can go toward buying it later. Repairs are done by what it calls "John Deere-certified technicians," using genuine John Deere OEM parts. Road technicians can come to a job site for emergency repairs. The site also notes that tracked harvesters give better traction on steep ground and in areas hit hard by rain, and that its team will help you choose between wheeled and tracked models. This suits a landowner or operator who already runs, or plans to run, their own forestry machines and needs to buy, rent or repair them. It does not suit someone looking for a buyer for standing timber. From dobbsequipment.com, read 17 October 2026.

Questions landowners ask

How many timber buyers and foresters serve Columbia County?

9 businesses are listed for Columbia County: 2 consulting foresters and 7 buyers, loggers and mills. 6 of them have offices in the county.

How much is my timber worth in Columbia County?

Nobody can tell you what your timber is worth without walking it. Value depends on the species, the size and grade of the trees, how thickly they stand, the ground conditions and how easily a logger can reach them. University of Georgia Extension publishes an annual timber situation and outlook report with recent quarterly figures, which tells you what the market is doing, not what your tract holds. Anyone who quotes you a figure without seeing the land is guessing, and a guess in that direction is rarely in your favour.

Do I need a forestry consultant to sell timber in Columbia County?

You do not have to use one. A consulting forester works for you rather than the buyer, marks the timber, runs a sealed-bid sale and typically charges a percentage of the sale. Research from several state extension services has found that timber sold through a consultant often returns enough more to cover the fee, though results vary by tract and by market. The decision usually turns on the size of the sale and whether you have sold timber before.

Do I need a forestry consultant? →

Do I need a permit to cut timber in Georgia?

Georgia has no statewide permit for cutting timber on your own land, and state law forbids a county to require one or to charge a fee for a timber harvest notification. What a county may require is the notification itself: where its ordinance calls for one, the harvester files it before entering the property if possible and no later than 24 hours after entering, and the county may ask for a bond of up to $5,000 against damage to its roads. Not every county has an ordinance, so check with yours before work starts. Georgia's Best Management Practices are not a permit programme, but following them is how a harvest stays clear of the water-quality law that is enforceable.

What is timber worth in Columbia County?

No price series is published for Columbia County on its own. Georgia's latest published stumpage figures (University of Georgia Extension, Q3 2025) put mixed hardwood sawtimber at $26–$32 per ton. What your own timber brings depends on the species, the size and amount of it, and how far it is from a mill. A timber cruise by a forester settles it.
