Interfor is a sawmill listed in Perry, Georgia, in Houston County. Its own pages place the Monticello Division mill at 211 Old Troy Road, Monticello, Arkansas, on a 137-acre site acquired in June 2015 and extensively rebuilt starting in 2018. The mill cuts 10-foot and shorter 2"x4", 2"x6", and 4"x4" lumber, shipped by rail and truck to domestic markets, including Texas and the US Midwest. The register lists yellow pine as its species. The work described is milling logs into lumber, so a landowner looking for a logger or a timber buyer should understand this is a mill, not a crew that works the woods. Its customer promise is to deliver quality products "on spec and on time." Its sustainability pages also say that in US operations Interfor works with landowners and other log suppliers through SFI Fiber-Sourcing certification. This suits a landowner who wants to know where dimension lumber of these sizes is made, or who has logs to move to a mill, rather than one who needs someone to cut and haul a stand. Perry, GA

Twin Rivers Land and Timber is a timber company based in Perry, Georgia, in Houston County. Its main trade is timber buying, and the work it describes is raw biomass procurement, which means gathering wood material for clean, renewable energy. The company calls itself a full service timber company. Its projects reach across the Southeastern United States, and it supplies raw material for renewable bioenergy both at home and abroad. The company's public comments focus on woody material. Its chief executive, Clay Crosby, told state regulators in 2019 that the wood waste from storms, logging and roadside pruning could help the timber industry and landowners. He described the plan for small plants to burn that waste as "a small glass of water when you are really thirsty." The office lists a procurement manager, several project managers and a forest technician, each with a direct line. It suits a landowner whose wood is mostly branches, limbs and other woody debris, and who wants a buyer tied to the renewable energy supply chain. From twinriverstimber.com, read 17 October 2026.

Questions landowners ask

How many timber buyers and foresters serve Houston County?

14 businesses are listed for Houston County: 2 consulting foresters and 12 buyers, loggers and mills. 12 of them have offices in the county.

How much is my timber worth in Houston County?

Nobody can tell you what your timber is worth without walking it. Value depends on the species, the size and grade of the trees, how thickly they stand, the ground conditions and how easily a logger can reach them. University of Georgia Extension publishes an annual timber situation and outlook report with recent quarterly figures, which tells you what the market is doing, not what your tract holds. Anyone who quotes you a figure without seeing the land is guessing, and a guess in that direction is rarely in your favour.

Do I need a forestry consultant to sell timber in Houston County?

You do not have to use one. A consulting forester works for you rather than the buyer, marks the timber, runs a sealed-bid sale and typically charges a percentage of the sale. Research from several state extension services has found that timber sold through a consultant often returns enough more to cover the fee, though results vary by tract and by market. The decision usually turns on the size of the sale and whether you have sold timber before.

Do I need a forestry consultant? →

Do I need a permit to cut timber in Georgia?

Georgia has no statewide permit for cutting timber on your own land, and state law forbids a county to require one or to charge a fee for a timber harvest notification. What a county may require is the notification itself: where its ordinance calls for one, the harvester files it before entering the property if possible and no later than 24 hours after entering, and the county may ask for a bond of up to $5,000 against damage to its roads. Not every county has an ordinance, so check with yours before work starts. Georgia's Best Management Practices are not a permit programme, but following them is how a harvest stays clear of the water-quality law that is enforceable.

What is timber worth in Houston County?

No price series is published for Houston County on its own. Georgia's latest published stumpage figures (University of Georgia Extension, Q3 2025) put mixed hardwood sawtimber at $26–$32 per ton. What your own timber brings depends on the species, the size and amount of it, and how far it is from a mill. A timber cruise by a forester settles it.
