Stella Sawmill is a locally-owned mill in Milan, Illinois. It grew out of a hobby into a full service custom milling and kiln drying operation with hardwood sales, and it serves Rock Island County. The work here is custom sawing, starting with your log and finishing with rough sawn green lumber. From there they offer vacuum kiln drying, which they say dries wood "up to 10 times faster than traditional kilns" while cutting down on cracking and cupping, plus flattening service and log transport with their own grapple truck. They cut and stock walnut, maple, cherry, ash, sycamore, white oak, red oak, soft maple and hard maple, along with a line of exotic species like bloodwood, padauk and purple heart for woodworking projects. A lot of their material is salvaged. They describe gathering logs from "municipalities, businesses and homeowners" rather than letting trees go to waste in a landfill or chipper. There's no stated minimum tract size, but their sawing service is billed by the hour with a two hour minimum, which points to this being a job-based operation rather than one built around buying standing timber off a tract of acres. They also run a retail showroom with hardwood sales and firewood.
