About Renaissance Design Group
Renaissance Design Group is a portable sawmill and woodworking shop in St. Cloud, Minnesota, run by Mike Fanslau. The work is wood recycling: milling logs from trees that have died or come down, and turning them into lumber, furniture and other pieces. The shop is on Hemlock Road, west of Saint Cloud near Rockville, and the business serves Minnesota and the Upper Midwest. Mike will pick up a log that is already on the ground with a hoisted trailer and take it back to the mill. He does not take trees down. Logs around 100 inches long work best. He may also buy a log, depending on demand. The species list includes red oak, white oak, black walnut, hickory, elm, ash, cedar, pine, spruce, Tamarack and teak. The mill cuts slabs and timber, and the lumber dries in one of two kilns, one indoors and one solar. You can bring your own lumber, or the mill can come to you. Mike has had a wood shop his whole life and bought a portable sawmill in 2018. The shop also builds custom tables, mantels, small sheds and benches, and it does epoxy work and coaches people who want to learn it. In its own words, the business aims to "turn old logs into cherished memories." It suits a landowner near Saint Cloud with a few fallen trees who wants the wood milled into lumber or keepsakes instead of firewood. From portablewoodworker.com, read 8 October 2026.
