Ed Allen Designs is a sawmill and furniture shop in St. Peter, Minnesota, in Nicollet County. Ed Allen has spent a lifetime buying and selling logs, following his great-grandfather, grandfather and dad. The business has its roots in selling whole logs to buyers around the world, mostly for veneer. Today it also builds custom hardwood furniture and has opened a showroom. It offers saw milling and wood drying. The slab saw cuts pieces up to 66 inches wide and 32 feet long, and the shop keeps 3,000 kiln-dried slabs in storage that it has sawn over the years. It works in walnut, oak, white oak, big leaf maple and cherry. It builds kitchen, dining and conference tables, desks, benches, counter and bar tops, and wall art. Other services include CNC surfacing and planing, custom epoxy inlays, table resurfacing, delivery and DIY epoxy classes. Home woodworkers can buy slabs direct. The shop draws on over 50 years of experience and believes "every tree should have a second life." It belongs to its local chamber of commerce.
