Montana Custom Millwork
About Montana Custom Millwork
Montana Custom Millwork is a sawmill and millwork shop in Billings, Montana. They mill Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, blue stain pine, and walnut, taking it from "every log sourced within 100 miles" through to rough-cut lumber, finished boards, post and beam timbers, live-edge slabs, and mulch. The whole process, from log yard to planer, is handled in-house by the same shop. Work ranges from single boards to full truckloads: structural framing, tongue and groove and shiplap, green or dried post and beam timbers for pole barns and gazebos, dunnage and pallet lumber for industrial customers, live-edge slabs for tables and bar tops, and custom pieces like stair treads, decking, and saunas. They describe their pricing as "mill-direct pricing, skipping the big-box markup," since they cut out the usual distributor markup. They serve eastern Montana, with Yellowstone County among the areas covered, and are named for Billings, Laurel, Columbus, Hardin, and Miles City. The mill was founded in February 2020 by Jessyca and Nick Chiasson, a family operation that runs every step themselves. Jessyca comes from building and landscaping and built her own home's furniture before this; Nick spent over twelve years as a building contractor and worked a sawmill in New Hampshire before heading west. This fits a landowner who already has logs down, or is working with a logger, and needs someone local to custom-mill that wood into usable lumber, timbers, or slabs rather than someone who buys standing timber or manages the land itself.
