Ridge & Valley Forest Management Services is a forestry consulting outfit working out of Augusta, New Jersey, with an office on US-Route 206. The business has been "managing healthy, productive, sustainable forests in northern New Jersey since 1979." This isn't a logging crew. The work here is consulting and planning: forest management plans, forest stand improvement, invasive species control, and help with Farmland Assessment paperwork for owners whose woodlot is more than half wooded. On the invasive species side, the team holds Commercial Applicator Licenses to spray herbicide on species like autumn olive, multiflora rose, and Japanese barberry, and they note that "the best time to treat invasive plants is before they take over your entire woodlot." The staff carries real paper: Approved Forester status in New Jersey, Certified Tree Farm Inspector, and membership in both the Society of American Foresters and the NJ Forest Association. The company serves Sussex County and is also found in Warren County records. Hours are by appointment only, and services beyond the four listed are still being filled out on their own site. This fits a landowner in northern New Jersey who wants a written forest management plan, help qualifying for Farmland Assessment, or invasive plants pushed back before they take over the understory, rather than someone looking to get trees cut and hauled right away. Pops Barn is a working sawmill and slab yard in Byram Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, run on a 12-acre compound with a pole barn, millhouse and kiln container on site. It mills, dries, flattens and builds, start to finish, and most of what it sells is slabs cut from its own logs. If you've got standing timber or a log on the ground, this is a place that will take it. "Got a tree down? We take logs," and they'll run it on the Norwood HD36 bandsaw or the Lucas slabber, which opens pieces up to 76 inches wide, wider than most mills can handle. Species they work in include black walnut, white oak, red oak, cherry, ambrosia maple, shagbark hickory, hard and soft maple, red elm, poplar, eastern red cedar, black locust, white ash, beech, birch and pitch pine. Custom milling is priced by the job, with a call first before you drive out, since it's a working yard and not a retail counter: "Call or text before you drive out. It's a sawmill, not a store with a greeter." After milling, wood can go into the iDry AIR kiln, then get flattened and surfaced, or go further into finished pieces, tables, mantels, beams, CNC signs and carving, all done on site without farming work out. Pops Barn serves Sussex County directly, with its regular pickup and delivery reach covering Sussex, Morris, Warren, Passaic, Bergen, Essex and Hunterdon counties, plus curbside delivery into North Jersey and New York City. Founder Bob Gockeler runs it as a Norwood sawmill ambassador, and the business has operated since 2023. This suits a landowner near Sussex County who wants their own log milled into something they'll actually use or sell, not just a stumpage check. From pops-barn.com, read 10 October 2026.

Questions landowners ask

How many timber buyers and foresters serve Sussex County?

5 businesses are listed for Sussex County: 1 consulting forester and 4 buyers, loggers and mills. 2 of them have offices in the county.

How much is my timber worth in Sussex County?

Nobody can tell you what your timber is worth without walking it. Value depends on the species, the size and grade of the trees, how thickly they stand, the ground conditions and how easily a logger can reach them. Anyone who quotes you a figure without seeing the land is guessing, and a guess in that direction is rarely in your favour.

Do I need a forestry consultant to sell timber in Sussex County?

You do not have to use one. A consulting forester works for you rather than the buyer, marks the timber, runs a sealed-bid sale and typically charges a percentage of the sale. Research from several state extension services has found that timber sold through a consultant often returns enough more to cover the fee, though results vary by tract and by market. The decision usually turns on the size of the sale and whether you have sold timber before.

What is timber worth in Sussex County?

No price series is published for Sussex County on its own. New Jersey's latest published stumpage figures (Penn State Extension, Q1 2026) put white oak at $637–$752 per thousand board feet. What your own timber brings depends on the species, the size and amount of it, and how far it is from a mill. A timber cruise by a forester settles it.

Forester listings for Sussex County come from the county register, revised 2026-11-04. The register is updated quarterly.
