Before you take the first offer
A timber buyer's job is to buy your timber as cheaply as they can. A consulting forester works for you — they measure what's standing, tell you what it's worth, and run a competitive sale, usually for a percentage of the price. That makes their interests line up with yours. 24 of the 26 foresters covering Transylvania County offer the full set — appraisal, cruise, and running the sale itself. Consulting Foresters in Transylvania County (1)
This forester has an office right here in Transylvania County. A forester works for you, not for the buyer.
The office is over the state line in York, South Carolina, but the coverage is squarely western North Carolina: twenty-four counties from the far southwestern mountains through the foothills and into Mecklenburg and Union. Two registered foresters. Appraisal, cruise and sale administration are all there, with prescribed burning, herbicide application, wetland delineation and urban forestry behind them. No association memberships and no website appear in the register.

Bishop Forestry and Land, PLLC is a consulting forestry business based in Waynesville, North Carolina, run by Blair Bishop. The work covers the full range a landowner might need: forest management plans and mapping, reforestation, timber stand improvement, timber appraisal, timber cruise and volume estimates, timber sale and contract administration, stewardship plans, wildlife and recreation management, forest taxation, and farm or rural land improvement work like pasture clearing, ponds, and road layout. They also do expert witness and testimony work for land disputes or timber trespass cases, and use drone imagery and GIS mapping for property assessment. On a timber sale, the work covers assessing the timber, "marketing timber to all potential buyers," developing a harvest plan, writing the contract, and staying on top of regulatory compliance, with the stated aim of "ensuring fair market value" for the landowner. They serve western North Carolina, naming a long list of counties: Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Cherokee, Clay, Cleveland, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain, Transylvania, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yancey. Blair Bishop holds an NC Registered Forester license (#1575), is an SAF Certified Forester (#53779), and also holds an NC Real Estate Broker license (#295557). This fits a landowner in the western part of the state who wants one person handling the plan, the sale, and the paperwork, and who also wants someone who can speak to land disputes or boundary questions if they come up. Natural Resources Management and Mapping Service works from Waynesville across the thirty-two North Carolina counties on its register entry, the mountain west and foothills running east into the Charlotte piedmont, and its home page describes the practice as consulting for western North Carolina woodlands with over 30 years of experience working with woodland owners across the state. The services page says NRMMS has been working with woodland owners across North Carolina since 1993 and specialises in custom forest management plans for tax purposes or forest stewardship, adding that it tailors plans for land ownership groups and associations wanting to better care for shared woodlands and raise their aesthetic and economic value; example stewardship plans, forest tax plans and a homeowners association plan are published for download. A second side of the business serves industry rather than the landowner: geospatial and forest analytics, in particular detailed analysis of feedstock availability and competition, which the firm calls woodbasket analysis, for forest industries, communities and economic developers. Outreach is the third strand, with stated ties to North Carolina Tree Farm, Cooperative Extension and the community college system, and landowner and real estate professional training offered through community college continuing education. Owner James Jeuck, PhD, describes himself as a professional forester and consultant since 1993 with four degrees in forestry and a concentration in natural resource economics; he has taught forestry and geospatial technologies at Haywood Community College for over 15 years, spent more than eight years with NCSU Extension Forestry, and says he has performed over 40 woodbasket site analyses. Three associates are named alongside him: Grizel Gonzalez-Jeuck, in natural resource outreach and project planning since 2012; Gary Fitzgerald, a mechanical engineer with a technical degree in forest management; and Peter Barber, a forest management graduate with eighteen years as a Florida real estate broker behind him. Blue Ridge Forestry is a consulting practice based in Asheville, carried on the N.C. Forest Service register for thirty-two counties running from Cherokee and Clay in the far southwest, up through the Blue Ridge and out across the foothills into Mecklenburg and Union. Its site headlines sustainable land management and forestry services and states a mission of providing forest resource expertise to landowners, professionals and companies. The forest management planning page describes basic, comprehensive and stewardship plans alongside harvest, regeneration and wildlife plans, notes that a stewardship plan is a first step toward NRCS cost-share funding or Tree Farm, FSC or SFI certification, and explains the North Carolina present-use-value route, which asks a landowner to hold 20 acres of timberland and file an approved plan prepared by a registered forester. The valuation page says the firm's specialty is quality Appalachian timber and that it also cruises white and southern yellow pine, working across veneer logs, grade saw-logs, pallet logs, plywood and peeler logs, chip-n-saw, pulpwood, firewood, posts and poles, and biomass. Value estimates are produced for acquisition due diligence, IRS timber basis, casualty loss, sale planning, timber theft, insurance claims and estate planning. Tract reconnaissance uses unmanned aerial systems and GIS mapping to size up a tract quickly before deciding whether a full inventory is warranted. On sales the firm says it brokers timber much like a real estate broker and then administers the contract through the harvest with regular inspections, and that it has handled hundreds of timber sales over more than thirty years of implementing plans. Other work includes boundary relocation and marking by GPS, road and trail planning and layout, mapping and GIS, technical training, and harvest inspections as certified American Tree Farm inspectors. As described on blueridgeforestry.com, read 23 September 2026.
This is a mountain practice — thirteen counties covering the high country west and north of Asheville, from Buncombe and Haywood out to Madison, Mitchell, Yancey and Avery. The service list runs well past timber. Alongside appraisal, cruising and sale administration, the register credits environmental impact statements, urban forestry, recreation management, forest taxation and stewardship plans. That combination matters when the woods in question sit near a town, a watershed or a permitting question rather than out on open ground. SAF member, with a website listed. In its own words Helia is a Western North Carolina business based in Asheville, providing ecological, forestry and land management planning and stewardship services to forest landowners, conservation organisations and infrastructure projects, and it frames its forestry as ecoforestry — "commercial forestry, but through the lens of ecoforestry" — set against the traditional consulting forester who, as the firm puts it, sees the forest in terms of cash flow and growth. Plan work covers forest management plans for the present-use value (PUV) programme, Wildlife Conservation Land Program plans and forest stewardship plans, and the firm offers a free consultation with a North Carolina registered forester before any of it begins. Around the plans sit forest inventory and stand valuation — including back-dating stand values to establish a tax cost basis — timber sale management, marking a stand ahead of harvest, botanical and wildlife surveys, Baseline Documentation Reports for conservation easements, wetland delineation, Phase I ESA and GIS mapping; the firm also says it can help a landowner certify a tract as sustainable through Rainforest Alliance, the Forest Stewardship Council or the American Tree Farm System. Helia says its ecological and forestry projects total over 60,000 acres across the Southern Blue Ridge, North Carolina and the Southeast, and the practice is run by director Lloyd Raleigh, NC registered forester #1711, working from a home office in Asheville and travelling to the client. As described on heliaenvironmental.com, read 22 September 2026.
Wildwood Consulting, PLLC is a forestry consulting outfit based in Asheville, North Carolina. They work for the landowner, not the mill or the logger, helping with forest management plans, timber inventory and appraisal, timber basis work for tax purposes, timber sales and harvest oversight, silvicultural treatments, and urban forestry. Two of their staff are N.C. Registered Foresters. Beyond those core jobs, their broader services list runs to timber cruises, reforestation, timber stand improvement, prescribed burning, forest real estate, recreation management, wetland delineation, and wildlife management, among others. They cover a wide stretch of western North Carolina and a long list of counties, from Alexander and Ashe down through Henderson and Transylvania to Yancey, plus work in east Tennessee, the upstate of South Carolina, and southwestern Virginia. There's no stated minimum acreage, but the smallest job they describe is a 109 acre controlled burn at Green River Preserve, so that gives a sense of the scale they're used to working at. Their own words put the point plainly: they aim to "know the value of your assets before you make a decision" and to "get the best price for your timber and the best value out of any harvest activity." This fits a landowner with a sizable tract, especially one in or near the western Carolina mountains, who wants a forester handling the planning and the sale, not just a logger showing up with a truck. Western North Carolina, and only western North Carolina: twenty-eight counties from Cherokee and Graham in the far southwest, up through Buncombe and Madison, out to Ashe and Alleghany and down the foothills to Cleveland and Gaston. Fifteen services, an above-average list, and an unusual mix — urban forestry and wetland delineation alongside appraisal, cruising and sale administration. Herbicide application and timber stand improvement are listed too, which is the maintenance side of owning mountain woodland rather than the selling side. One thing the register does not say: this is not a commercial consulting firm. EcoForesters — the organisation writes its name as one word — describes itself as a non-profit professional forestry organisation dedicated to conserving and restoring Appalachian forests through education and stewardship, founded in 2015, and says its methods emphasise sound ecological management over other profit and production driven forest management approaches. It draws the distinction itself: where a commercial forester generally recommends the course of action yielding the most profit, EcoForesters says it will present all reasonable options and then recommend the one that most effectively conserves and restores the forest for current and future generations, while remaining economically viable and generating revenue to the landowner. What it offers landowners is forestry consultation — forest assessment, inventory and appraisal, forest stewardship planning, timber management and forest carbon evaluation — alongside conservation and restoration work, invasive species control, conservation easement baseline and monitoring reports, mapping and analysis, and landowner education; on harvesting it favours crown thinning and group selection over the clear-cutting and high-grading it says much of the region's forestland has already been through. Since 2015 it reports writing forest stewardship plans for 120 private forestland owners covering more than 126,000 acres across nineteen Western North Carolina counties and Vermont, and coordinating sustainable timber harvests on fourteen properties totalling more than 878 acres, so the tracts it handles run from very small holdings — it keeps a dedicated page for owners of fewer than ten acres — up to several thousand. A second office sits at Sylva, in Jackson County, alongside the Asheville main office. As described on ecoforesters.org, read 22 September 2026.
Every county on this list is in the mountains — Buncombe and Henderson west to Cherokee and Graham, north through Madison, Mitchell and Watauga. Appraisal, cruising and sale administration are listed, plus logging engineering, the piece that matters most when getting equipment onto steep ground is half the job. Urban forestry, forest taxation and stewardship plans fill out the entry.
Mountain work, essentially. Twenty-two counties running from Cherokee and Clay in the far southwest across the Blue Ridge to Watauga, Ashe and Wilkes, with a foothill edge in Catawba, McDowell, Polk and Rutherford. Steep ground is its own problem, and the register credits this firm with logging engineering alongside the appraisal, cruising and sale administration a landowner needs to put timber on the market. Fourteen services in total, including forest taxation and recreation management. No website is listed.
This one is not a timber-sale practice. Appraisal, cruising and sale administration are all absent from the register entry. What is listed instead — management plans and mapping, reforestation, stand improvement, logging engineering, Christmas tree management, recreation, urban forestry and stewardship plans — points at growing and tending woodland rather than selling it, across 23 counties covering essentially the whole mountain region, Wilkes and Alleghany west to Cherokee and Clay. It also holds one of the twenty oldest registrations in the state register. A landowner ready to market standing timber should look elsewhere in the directory.
Hiawassee sits just over the Georgia line from Clay County, and from there this firm's register entry covers thirty-two North Carolina counties: the whole mountain west, the foothills, and east across the western piedmont as far as Mecklenburg and Union. Seventeen services puts it near the top of the range on the register — the full appraise, cruise and sell package, then prescribed burning, environmental impact statements, urban forestry, wildlife management and stewardship planning. The office being out of state is the one thing to weigh.
All one hundred counties — one of the few listings on the register that covers the entire state. The registration here is number 8, the second-oldest of the 178 registrations on the register, which is about as long a tenure as North Carolina forestry has to offer. Beyond the sale work of appraisal, cruise and contract administration, this firm surveys, so a boundary question and a timber cruise can be settled on the same visit. Christmas tree management, wetland delineation and environmental impact statements are also listed.
Based over the line in Johnson City, Tennessee, and covering twenty-four counties in the North Carolina mountains — Cherokee, Clay and Graham in the far southwest, up through Buncombe and Madison to Ashe and Alleghany. The register lists five services and no more: management plans, timber appraisal, cruising, sale administration and logging engineering. That is a timber sale specialist's list, and logging engineering earns its place on steep ground. Nothing else is offered, so anything beyond the sale would need another firm.
Alliance Forestry, Inc. is a forestry consulting business based in Dallas, North Carolina. The Dallas office, led by Brian Medlock, covers Western NC, SC, and VA. The company also has a branch in Tarboro, North Carolina, run by Mike Wittig, covering Eastern NC, SC, and VA. On the consulting side, the work includes timber sales, appraisals, inventories, forest management plans including Forest Stewardship plans, boundary line maintenance, and forest taxation assistance. The staff includes NC Registered Foresters, and the business holds N.C. Registered Forester #1124. They also do land clearing and site work, custom herbicide applications for utility companies managing rights-of-way, and forestry herbicide work by aerial, ground, and backpack methods, as licensed pesticide applicators in NC, SC, and VA. On the planting side, they put in over a million seedlings a year, including loblolly pine, longleaf pine, and a variety of hardwood species, with guidance on genetics, planting density, and seedling type. Mapping is handled through GIS and GPS work, and "Acreage determinations can be made in the office or the field." Wildlife management services cover food plots, prescribed burning, and removal of nuisance animals including beavers. This suits a landowner who wants one outfit that can run a timber sale, handle the paperwork and mapping, and also come back later for planting or herbicide work, rather than hiring out each piece separately. From allianceforestry.com, read 10 October 2026.
Statewide coverage — all 100 North Carolina counties — from an office in Gainesville, Georgia. Fifteen services are recorded, including the three that make a timber sale work: appraisal, cruising, and sale and contract administration. Prescribed burning, herbicide application, urban forestry and stewardship plans fill out the rest. The register carries this entry under the name US Forest Service, with one N.C. Registered Forester and no website given.
Registration 392 is the tenth-oldest entry on the North Carolina register, about as long a tenure as this directory contains. Coverage runs seventy counties — the entire mountain west, the whole piedmont, and down through the sandhills to the southeastern coast, stopping short only of the northeastern corner. Thirteen services, including appraisal, cruising and sale administration, plus forest taxation, forest real estate and prescribed burning. For a landowner whose sale is tangled up with an estate or a tax question, that last combination is the point.
Evergreen Forest Management is Daron Brown, a North Carolina registered forester based at Millers Creek in Wilkes County, and the register puts him across thirty-five counties, from Ashe and Watauga down through Burke and Catawba to Guilford and Rockingham. His own account is more specific. He writes that his career began in 1989 in eastern North Carolina as a procurement forester for a wood dealership and sawmill, and that after ten years buying timber and managing loggers he moved back to Wilkes County and opened Evergreen in 2000. Since then, he says, he has served clients in northwestern North Carolina and southwestern Virginia, most of the work being timber sales and appraisals intermixed with stewardship and management plans; the home page also announces services for all of northeast Tennessee. The site describes a practice specialising in timber sales for private landowners, with management and present-use tax plans, stewardship plans, forest inventory and mapping, wildlife management, reforestation, thinnings, prescribed burns, hunting lease management, insect and disease control and invasive vegetation control alongside. The timber sale contract is set out step by step: marking property lines and securing a surveyor if they cannot be found, a full appraisal of acreage, species, size, volume and market value, advertising the timber and overseeing bidding or negotiation, handling timber deeds and cutting contracts, supervising the harvest for compliance, and a closing inspection against state environmental rules — which, the site notes, can otherwise leave a landowner fined for a logging contractor's violations. Appraisals are offered for estate divisions, financial planning, tax baselines and loan collateral, and come as a written valuation broken down by species, stand, diameter, height and board foot. Brown states he is a member of the Society of American Foresters, licensed and insured for controlled burns and an N.C. licensed forest pesticide and herbicide applicator, and that the firm finds state and federal cost-share funding for clients and files the applications on their behalf. He also sells real estate through Realty One Group Results. As described on evergreenforestry.com, read 23 September 2026.
Registration 513 sits seventeenth-oldest on the state register, and the firm holds Association of Consulting Foresters membership — ACF admits full-time consultants only, so it signals this is the business rather than a sideline. The office is in Blythewood, South Carolina, but the NC Forest Service register credits sixty-two North Carolina counties: the mountains, effectively the whole piedmont, the sandhills and the southeastern coast. Fourteen services, with appraisal, cruising and sale administration at the center and forest taxation, forest real estate and stewardship planning around them.
Registered in North Carolina, but the office is across the line in Camden, South Carolina. Coverage runs to the far western end of the state — Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Swain — up through Buncombe, then east to the Charlotte piedmont and the Sandhills. Thirty-two counties. Appraisal, cruising and sale administration are all listed, plus logging engineering, which counts on steep ground.
Eastern Forest Consultants describes itself as a professional forest consulting firm serving the eastern United States, based in Clemmons with an additional office in Christiansburg, Virginia. Its primary client is the non-industrial private forest landowner, and the firm says it has found a niche providing services for landowners with relatively small projects, starting with a free initial consultation and a site visit with a forester. Its argument to owners is that active management beats letting a stand develop naturally, yielding greater returns in less time, and that neglect carries real risk from catastrophic wildfire, invasive species and forest pests, whether the objective is income, wildlife, hunting or long-term stewardship. It recommends a management plan that is kept current and actually executed. Published services include timber sales, timber inventory, management plans, herbicide application, tree planting, boundary line recon and painting, crop tree release, pre-commercial thinning, forest road layout, GPS and GIS mapping, and timber trespass resolution. The firm also contracts its crews to other consultants and agencies on an hourly, daily or production basis, and maintains relationships with the North Carolina Forest Service, the Virginia Department of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service. State registration covers fifty-one counties across the mountains and piedmont. As described on easternforestconsultants.com, read 23 September 2026.
Anson, Cabarrus, Mecklenburg, Stanly and Union anchor this Norwood firm's fourteen-county register territory, with a second reach southwest to Rutherford, Polk and Transylvania. Murr Forestry's own about page puts it more simply: an independently owned forestry consulting business based in Stanly County, providing forestry assistance to landowners in central and western North Carolina, with a stated mission of helping owners get the most from their investment in timber land, whether the goal is timber income, family recreation, better wildlife habitat, or some combination of those. The services page groups the work into forest management planning and mapping, timber appraisal (volume and value estimation), administration of timber sales and timber stand improvement projects, afforestation and reforestation, forest protection, forest recreation, wildlife and aesthetics, and forest certification. Plans are written to meet or exceed the requirements of county present-use-value tax deferral, cost-share assistance programmes and certification programmes, and the firm prepares plans to the criteria of both the American Tree Farm System and the Forest Stewardship Program. Forest protection, as the site describes it, takes in boundary line marking and maintenance, routine insect and disease checks, fire line and prescribed burning recommendations, and, in the event of timber theft, coordinating with law enforcement to investigate and appraise it. Managing principal J. R. Murr is a Registered Forester and Consulting Forester in North Carolina (RF# 1143), an American Tree Farm System Qualified Inspector (ID# 18400) and a licensed North Carolina Real Estate Broker (#315888), and also holds N.C. Environmental Educator and QDMA Deer Steward I certifications. He began as a Ranger with the N.C. Forest Service, served eight years with N.C. State Parks as Park Ranger and Park Superintendent, and retired from the N.C. Forest Service as a Forest Law Enforcement Officer; he started consulting part-time as J R's Forestry Services in 2007 and now works full-time through Murr Forestry, PLLC. As described on murrforestry.com, read 23 September 2026.
All 100 counties, which only a handful of firms on the state register can claim — wherever the tract sits in North Carolina, this one covers it. Two registered foresters, and the older of the two registrations is number 482, sixteenth-oldest of the 178 on the register. Appraisal, cruise and sale administration are all here, so a landowner can value the stand, measure it and run the sale through to contract in one place. Seventeen services in all, out as far as Christmas tree management, urban forestry and forest taxation. The firm holds Association of Consulting Foresters membership, which is limited to full-time consultants. The firm calls itself family owned and says it has run a consulting forestry business for over 40 years; William H. Lock has retired from full-time forestry work and his son Jonathan C. Barnes, who passed the state forestry exam in 2002, now runs the company as president. Alongside state registration in both North Carolina and Virginia it claims Certified Forester and Certified Arborist credentials, Tree Farm Inspector status and Technical Service Provider approval for NRCS cost-share programs, and it offers work turn-key — timber inventory, marketing, harvest inspection and reforestation through one office — plus timber tax basis estimates, timber trespass reports, growth models for income projections and landowner seminars and field tours. Real estate is the one thing it has pulled back from: the site says that side is now limited to advice and referrals rather than listing and selling land. Its public timber sale notices, bids taken sealed at the office, run from 2010 through 2021 and cover tracts from a few acres up to about 280, clustered in Rockingham, Guilford, Alamance and Caswell counties and over the line into Henry and Pittsylvania counties, Virginia. A first consultation is offered free. As described on whlock.com, read 22 September 2026.
Every county in North Carolina is listed against this firm — all 100 — which puts it in the small group on the register that will work anywhere in the state. The service list is narrow by comparison: ten entries, built tight around the sale itself, with appraisal, cruising and sale and contract administration at the middle and forest taxation, utilization and marketing, urban forestry and stewardship plans around them. Both ACF and SAF memberships are recorded. One registered forester covers that ground, which is worth knowing when you're arranging a visit.
Seven registered foresters is the top of the range on the state register, and it comes attached to eighty-four counties — mountains to the Outer Banks, with very little of North Carolina out of reach. Scale like that means a landowner isn't waiting on one person's calendar, and it means the firm doesn't vanish when someone retires. Nineteen services: wetland delineation, environmental impact statements, forest taxation and urban forestry, alongside the appraisal, cruise and sale-administration combination a competitive timber sale actually runs on. ACF and SAF. The firm trades as GFR Forestry Consultants and dates itself to 1964, and it works from four North Carolina offices — Raleigh, Lillington, Tarboro and Lake Waccamaw — with its published service area running beyond the state line into South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and the Eastern Shore. Its own account of a timber sale runs from stand assessment through a sale announcement and marketing plan to bid management, handled by foresters it says keep current on local buyers, pricing and competition; on the management side it names timber inventory and valuation, timber trespass analysis, forest management planning, GIS mapping, boundary line location and maintenance, pulpwood thinning, pest and disease control, fire protection measures and hunt and lease management. Two services sit outside the usual consulting list: timber basis determination and tax planning for estates and long-held family land, and wood flow and logistics work for landowners or businesses moving product to buyers. It also runs a rural real estate side, brokering timberland, hunting and agricultural tracts through licensed N.C. brokers. As described on gfrforestry.com, read 22 September 2026.
Three generations in, Parton Lumber has changed what it cuts about as often as its markets have: southern yellow pine for post-war housebuilding, Appalachian hardwoods through the furniture years, and eastern white pine today for window and millwork manufacturers. Verno Parton started the company in 1948 and his grandsons Furman and Patrick run it now, with family involvement in lumber traced back to roughly the 1850s. The Rutherfordton operation employs about 130 people, produces some 54 million board feet a year and holds 3.2 million board feet of kiln capacity, selling into export markets as well as domestic ones. It buys standing timber directly and manages its own procurement, so a landowner can sell to the mill without a middleman.
Gilkey's representatives are Registered Foresters in both North and South Carolina, an unusual credential for a business filed under timber buyers rather than consultants, and the company offers landowners a free timberland and harvest assessment through a request form on its contact page. Founded in 1954 by Jess Parton and still family-owned, it manufactures hardwood lumber for the furniture, flooring and specialty wood product trades; the Rutherford County economic development office describes it as having grown into an international supplier. Its buying ground is wider than the county list on this page - the company says it purchases standing timber and offers forestry assistance across western North Carolina, upstate South Carolina and eastern Tennessee, and works within state Best Management Practices for water quality.

Carolina Land & Timber Company is a timber buying and logging outfit based in Whittier, North Carolina. They buy standing timber, harvest it, and also handle land sales, working out of Jackson County and now across Western North Carolina, North Georgia, and Eastern Tennessee. Their work covers thinning, select cutting, and clear-cutting, plus timber cruising for appraisals and boundary line marking and recovery. On the land side, their brokers are licensed Real Estate Brokers who help with buying and selling land tracts. For a timber sale, they offer a free consultation first, then you choose how you get paid: lump sum, a one-time payment in full before any harvesting, or unit price, where you're paid as the timber is harvested based on tons or board feet from mill scale tickets. They'll buy standing timber on tracts of 10 acres and up, so this isn't the business for a small lot. They started with one logging crew and one forester and now run 6 logging crews and 3 foresters, which gives you a sense of how much they've grown since beginning in Jackson County. This fits a landowner with at least 10 acres who wants one company to both buy the timber and handle the harvest, and who might also want help with a land sale down the road. The only confirmation found for this Burnsville outfit is the N.C. Forest Service's Yancey County buyer list, which records it purchasing all hardwood and softwood species as standing timber, sawlogs and pulpwood — a wider brief than the "mixed hardwoods" this listing previously showed. Searches on the company name, the phone number and the Blue Rock Road address returned no website, no Facebook page, no BBB file and no Carolina Loggers Association membership. What the register says is all that can be verified about it.

Suncrest, LLC is a timber and wood products business in Waynesville, North Carolina, also known as Suncrest Mulch & More LLC. It buys timber and also turns wood into mulch and other products on site. On the timber side, the work includes sawlog purchase, pulpwood purchase, chip-n-saw purchase, and timber cruising, covering species like Southern Yellow Pine, Red Oak, White Oak, Yellow-Poplar, and Black Walnut. It serves landowners across Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, and Henderson counties. The mulch and biochar side runs from the Jonathan Creek Rd location, where it also offers bulk mulch delivery and retail yard sales to the public, working with pine and hardwood logs. As the business puts it, "we make our mulch out of repurposed locally harvested logs," and it describes the result as made "simply and sustainably." Mulch delivery is available within the J Creek area only, with a 10 yard minimum. The yard is open to walk-in customers with no appointment needed, and it takes cash, check, or credit card, with a 3.5% charge on card payments. This fits a landowner in its service counties who wants one place that will buy standing timber and also has an outlet for wood by-products like mulch, rather than a straight timber-only outfit. Questions landowners ask
How many timber buyers and foresters serve Transylvania County?
42 businesses are listed for Transylvania County: 26 consulting foresters and 16 buyers, loggers and mills. 3 of them have offices in the county.
How much is my timber worth in Transylvania County?
Nobody can tell you what your timber is worth without walking it. Value depends on the species, the size and grade of the trees, how thickly they stand, the ground conditions and how easily a logger can reach them. North Carolina State Extension publishes quarterly average stumpage prices by region, which tells you what the market is doing, not what your tract holds. Anyone who quotes you a figure without seeing the land is guessing, and a guess in that direction is rarely in your favour.
What stumpage value means →Do I need a forestry consultant to sell timber in Transylvania County?
You do not have to use one. A consulting forester works for you rather than the buyer, marks the timber, runs a sealed-bid sale and typically charges a percentage of the sale. Research from several state extension services has found that timber sold through a consultant often returns enough more to cover the fee, though results vary by tract and by market. The decision usually turns on the size of the sale and whether you have sold timber before.
Do I need a forestry consultant? →Do I need a permit to cut timber in North Carolina?
There is no statewide permit to harvest timber on your own land in North Carolina, but several rules still apply: the Forest Practices Guidelines for water quality, local county and municipal ordinances that can regulate harvesting, and sedimentation rules where a stream is involved. Requirements vary by county, so check with the county before work starts.
Permits and rules in North Carolina →What is timber worth in Transylvania County?
No price series is published for Transylvania County on its own. North Carolina's latest published stumpage figures (NC State Extension, Q2 2026) put oak sawtimber at $48.96 per ton. What your own timber brings depends on the species, the size and amount of it, and how far it is from a mill. A timber cruise by a forester settles it.
Forester listings for Transylvania County come from the North Carolina Forest Service register, revised 06-Apr-26. The register is updated quarterly.
