Not sure what your timber is worth?

Four questions and you get a ballpark range. No email needed to see it.

Before you take the first offer

A timber buyer's job is to buy your timber as cheaply as they can. A consulting forester works for you — they measure what's standing, tell you what it's worth, and run a competitive sale, usually for a percentage of the price. That makes their interests line up with yours. 50 of the 52 foresters covering Hampton County offer the full set — appraisal, cruise, and running the sale itself. How to decide whether you need one

Morrison Forestry & Real Estate Co., Inc. is a consulting firm in Estill, South Carolina. It was founded as a sole proprietorship in 1972 and provides forest management services for landowners. Its stated range covers over 100,000 acres of timberland across forty-five counties in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. The firm handles timber sales, timber cruising with GIS and GPS mapping, forest and wildlife management plans, reforestation, prescribed burning, hunting leases, land sales, and appraisals of land, timber and estates. On a timber sale, it recommends the area, timing and method of sale, whether lump-sum, per unit or negotiated. It runs the bid, prepares the contract, supervises the logging, and reports harvest values and volumes before disbursing the revenue. The aim is "quality residual forests" once the cutting is done. Foresters on staff are registered in Georgia and South Carolina and are SAF Certified. The firm also lists membership in the SC Forestry Association, the Association of Consulting Foresters and the Society of American Foresters, plus SC Certified General Real Estate Appraiser and SC Certified Real Estate Broker in Charge. Sales are "tailored to achieve individual landowner objectives." This suits a landowner who wants timber sales, appraisals and a land sale all handled by one firm. It works with private landowners, forest product companies, and timberland investment groups across the Southeast, and it says it treats land as something that should earn income and grow in value over time. Mr. Stuckey brings about 30 years in forestry, land brokerage, and wood buying. Before starting the firm, he spent years at International Paper overseeing forest inventory on 2.7 million acres and buying wood for the company's Georgetown paper mill. The firm states that it holds Broker-in-Charge licenses in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, that it has Registered Foresters in those three states, and that Mr. Stuckey is a SAF Certified Forester. It says its timber sales aim for "top of the market" pricing, and that it is certified to run prescribed burns. The South Carolina counties it lists include Georgetown, Horry, Charleston, Beaufort, Greenville, and Richland, along with many others across the state. Dargan, King, and Knight, LLC is a forestry consulting firm in Darlington, South Carolina, with its office on Cashua Street. It takes on timber sales and appraisals, reforestation, herbicide application, road and ditch building, prescribed burning, and wildlife management. It also handles endangered species work, forest certification, carbon sequestration, conservation easements, taxation, pine straw sales, and real estate sales and divisions. Its members have served as expert witnesses in court. The firm says it generates the most timber sale revenue possible for the landowner while ensuring a quality logging job. Its goal is for "each tree to reach its highest potential value market." Buyers accept its pole marking, so poles can be sold even when a sale area has very few. The species it names include pine sawlogs, red oak, cherrybark oak, and cypress. The smallest job its pages show is about 128 acres, the O'Bryan Tract near Florence, which was offered as a land sale. That comes from the smallest job shown, not from a stated minimum. The firm lists 26 counties, including Darlington, Florence, Dillon, Horry, Charleston, and Aiken. Tim Dargan is a South Carolina Registered Forester, licensed real estate broker, and certified prescribed fire manager. Tracy Knight is a registered forester in South and North Carolina. Charlie King and Tracy Knight are licensed commercial chemical applicators in both states. It suits a landowner with pine or hardwood timber who wants help with the sale, or who is also weighing a land sale, a conservation easement, or longleaf work. The services it lists include timber appraisal, damage and trespass appraisals, timber harvesting plans, timber sales, forest litigation, expert witness work and theft and fraud prevention. James M. Simons & Company, Inc. is a forestry consulting firm in Holly Hill, South Carolina. It was established in 1977 as a full-service forest management firm for the private landowner. The firm says it is not affiliated with any timber buying company, dealer or logger, so it can "represent the best interests of our clients." Its work includes timber and timberland appraisals, timber cruises, forest management plans, reforestation, wildlife management, prescribed burning, GPS mapping and tree farm inspections, among others. For a timber sale, the firm talks with the owner about what is to be cut and when, marks the property and sale boundaries, and gives the owner the volume and expected value of the trees. It then sends Invitations to Bid to selected timber buyers and drafts the timber sale contract to protect the seller and the site. Afterward it follows up on the logging and arranges prompt repairs. All sales must follow the South Carolina Forestry Commission's Best Management Practices guidelines. Counties served include Aiken, Richland, Horry, Greenville and York. Certifications include membership in the South Carolina Forestry Association, the Association of Consulting Foresters and the Society of American Foresters, and an SC Certified Real Estate Broker in Charge. Reforestation help covers managing site preparation, applying for federal and state cost-share programs, choosing seedlings, setting tree spacing and supervising planting. The firm offers to walk a property at no cost or obligation. This firm suits a landowner who wants a consultant working on their side of a timber sale and a longer-term plan, rather than for a buyer. Forest Resource Consultants, Inc. is a forestry consulting firm based in Macon. It has been growing forests and landowner returns since 1970. Its certified foresters handle forest management plans, timber harvesting, reforestation, wildlife habitat work and prescribed burns. The firm also does timber appraisal, real estate appraisal and sales, hunt lease administration, GPS mapping, and investment and tax counseling. Its listed counties include Aiken, Greenville, Lexington, Richland and Spartanburg, and it says it works across the Southeast. The stated minimum is 50 acres. The firm says it builds a tailored strategy whether you own "50 acres or 50000," so owners of different sizes are taken on. They list the Association of Consulting Foresters among their credentials, along with a South Carolina Certified General Real Estate Appraiser. On selling timber, they explain the two common methods. A lump sum pays you up front for all the timber in the sale. Pay-as-cut pays you as the timber is harvested, based on volume and product type. They say poor product sorting and careless harvesting can cost a landowner money or damage the land, and they say they work to protect your interests from start to finish. This firm suits a landowner with at least 50 acres who wants one consultant for planning, timber sales, land transactions and estate or tax questions. From frc.us.com, read 16 October 2026.

Hampton, SC

South Carolina Timber Co, Inc is a forestry business in Hampton, South Carolina. Its main trade is consulting forestry, and it also does logging. It was founded in 1984 by Harry Lee Foy and Harry Lee "Bubba" Foy, Jr. The services it lists are timber harvesting, timber marketing, timber cruising, reforestation, prescribed burning, and forest management planning. It says it sells harvested timber to local sawmills, pulp mills, pole yards, and engineered wood product facilities, and that it watches changing markets to "maximize dollars for the landowner." For timber cruising, it uses a GPS system it recently bought to measure acres and estimate standing timber value, along with four decades of cruising experience. Its loggers hold South Carolina Forestry Association training certification and follow local, state, and national harvesting guidelines. For reforestation, it offers to manage the job from start to finish, working with nurseries, herbicide applicators, and tree planters. The team includes Hank Foy, Bubba Foy, and Tucker Swofford, who holds a degree in Forest Management Technology from Horry Georgetown Technical College. Hampton is the county they list as the area they serve. This business suits a landowner in Hampton who wants one firm to handle the planning, the cutting, and the replanting. Questions landowners ask

How many timber buyers and foresters serve Hampton County?

59 businesses are listed for Hampton County: 52 consulting foresters and 7 buyers, loggers and mills. 9 of them have offices in the county.

How much is my timber worth in Hampton County?

Nobody can tell you what your timber is worth without walking it. Value depends on the species, the size and grade of the trees, how thickly they stand, the ground conditions and how easily a logger can reach them. the South Carolina Forestry Commission publishes quarterly statewide average stumpage prices in dollars per ton, which tells you what the market is doing, not what your tract holds. Anyone who quotes you a figure without seeing the land is guessing, and a guess in that direction is rarely in your favour.

Do I need a forestry consultant to sell timber in Hampton County?

You do not have to use one. A consulting forester works for you rather than the buyer, marks the timber, runs a sealed-bid sale and typically charges a percentage of the sale. Research from several state extension services has found that timber sold through a consultant often returns enough more to cover the fee, though results vary by tract and by market. The decision usually turns on the size of the sale and whether you have sold timber before.

Do I need a forestry consultant? →

Do I need a permit to cut timber in South Carolina?

South Carolina requires no state permit and no notification to harvest timber on your own land, and state law exempts timber production and harvesting from erosion and sediment permitting outright, with no conditions attached. Best Management Practices for water quality are non-regulatory here, though the Forestry Commission says landowners are ultimately responsible for complying with them, and the federal Clean Water Act exemptions for forest roads and wetlands do depend on it. A county or city cannot regulate forestry activity on your tract at all if it meets any one of five tests in state law, among them present-use-value taxation, a forest management plan, or managing under the Commission's BMPs. Burning slash is the exception: outside town limits you must notify the Forestry Commission before you light it.

What is timber worth in Hampton County?

No price series is published for Hampton County on its own. South Carolina's latest published stumpage figures (South Carolina Forestry Commission (from Timber Mart-South), Q2 2026) put pine sawtimber at $21.91 per ton. What your own timber brings depends on the species, the size and amount of it, and how far it is from a mill. A timber cruise by a forester settles it.

Forester listings for Hampton County come from the South Carolina Forestry Commission consulting forester list, revised 30-Apr-26. The register is updated quarterly.
