Not sure what your timber is worth?

Four questions and you get a ballpark range. No email needed to see it.

Before you take the first offer

A timber buyer's job is to buy your timber as cheaply as they can. A consulting forester works for you — they measure what's standing, tell you what it's worth, and run a competitive sale, usually for a percentage of the price. That makes their interests line up with yours. 52 of the 55 foresters covering Richland County offer the full set — appraisal, cruise, and running the sale itself. How to decide whether you need one

James M. Simons & Company, Inc. is a forestry consulting firm in Holly Hill, South Carolina. It was established in 1977 as a full-service forest management firm for the private landowner. For a timber sale, the firm talks with the owner about what is to be cut and when, marks the property and sale boundaries, and gives the owner the volume and expected value of the trees. All sales must follow the South Carolina Forestry Commission's Best Management Practices guidelines. Counties served include Aiken, Richland, Horry, Greenville and York. Ware Land & Timber, LLC is a forestry and land sales business in Rock Hill, South Carolina. It works on both sides of owning woods: the trees and the land under them. As they put it, "Most landowners sell timber only once or twice in a lifetime." That makes a first sale worth getting right. The firm does timber appraisal, timber marking, timber sales, harvesting plans, and forest management plans. It also handles wildlife management, reforestation, GPS mapping, tree farm inspections, hunt lease management, damage and trespass appraisals, logging and road design, and real estate appraisal and sales. The counties they serve are Abbeville, Anderson, Cherokee, Chester, Edgefield, Fairfield, Greenville, Greenwood, Laurens, McCormick, Newberry, Oconee, Pickens, Richland, Saluda, Spartanburg, Union, and York. They say insurance, payment procedures, and security and performance bonds protect your land during a harvest. Their people are Registered Foresters and hold a South Carolina real estate broker license. The business also counts membership in the South Carolina Forestry Association and the Association of Consulting Foresters among its credentials, along with a South Carolina certified real estate broker in charge. This suits a landowner who wants one firm to handle both the timber sale and the land, and who owns in one of the counties listed. From wareforestland.com, read 10 October 2026.

Forest Resource Consultants, Inc. is a forestry consulting firm based in Macon. It has been growing forests and landowner returns since 1970. Its certified foresters handle forest management plans, timber harvesting, reforestation, wildlife habitat work and prescribed burns. The firm also does timber appraisal, real estate appraisal and sales, hunt lease administration, GPS mapping, and investment and tax counseling. Its listed counties include Aiken, Greenville, Lexington, Richland and Spartanburg, and it says it works across the Southeast. The stated minimum is 50 acres. The firm says it builds a tailored strategy whether you own "50 acres or 50000," so owners of different sizes are taken on. They list the Association of Consulting Foresters among their credentials, along with a South Carolina Certified General Real Estate Appraiser. On selling timber, they explain the two common methods. A lump sum pays you up front for all the timber in the sale. Pay-as-cut pays you as the timber is harvested, based on volume and product type. They say poor product sorting and careless harvesting can cost a landowner money or damage the land, and they say they work to protect your interests from start to finish. This firm suits a landowner with at least 50 acres who wants one consultant for planning, timber sales, land transactions and estate or tax questions. From frc.us.com, read 16 October 2026.

Work includes custom log sawing and drying, kiln drying, slabs and lumber sales, dunnage for commercial shipping, and fireplace mantels and brackets. The species list covers Southern Yellow Pine, white oak, red oak, poplar, gum, hickory, walnut, pecan and sycamore. SiteClear LLC is a portable sawmill service based in Chapin, South Carolina. Its owner, Gary Atkinson, cuts logs into lumber for customers across the Greater Columbia area, and the county named is Richland. You can have the milling done on your property, or you can have your logs loaded and hauled to the business's facility, with the finished lumber delivered if you want it. The mill is a diesel-powered TimberKing 2020 that is towed to your yard if you have enough working room. The site has to be level and flat, with space for logs to move in and for lumber and slabs to come off. Logs can be up to 32 feet long and 39 inches in diameter, and limbs must be trimmed flush with the log. Species named include pecan, poplar, cedar, hickory, heart pine, black walnut, oak and yellow pine. The business says it cuts "top-quality dimensional lumber," and it air dries the boards in stacks under surplus metal roofing. First-time customers need a site consultation before the job. Gary Atkinson is a Lieutenant Colonel in the South Carolina State Guard and a Senior Reserve Deputy with the Richland County Sheriff's Department. He recently retired after more than forty years in management at Volvo Construction Equipment. The business is first responder owned and operated, says it is insured, and states that "safety is our first priority." Calls and texts go to 828-280-6670. It suits a Midlands landowner who already has logs on hand and wants them turned into lumber, rather than selling standing timber. From siteclearllc.com, read 16 October 2026.

Questions landowners ask

How many timber buyers and foresters serve Richland County?

59 businesses are listed for Richland County: 55 consulting foresters and 4 buyers, loggers and mills. 9 of them have offices in the county.

How much is my timber worth in Richland County?

Nobody can tell you what your timber is worth without walking it. Value depends on the species, the size and grade of the trees, how thickly they stand, the ground conditions and how easily a logger can reach them. the South Carolina Forestry Commission publishes quarterly statewide average stumpage prices in dollars per ton, which tells you what the market is doing, not what your tract holds. Anyone who quotes you a figure without seeing the land is guessing, and a guess in that direction is rarely in your favour.

What stumpage value means →

Do I need a forestry consultant to sell timber in Richland County?

You do not have to use one. A consulting forester works for you rather than the buyer, marks the timber, runs a sealed-bid sale and typically charges a percentage of the sale. Research from several state extension services has found that timber sold through a consultant often returns enough more to cover the fee, though results vary by tract and by market. The decision usually turns on the size of the sale and whether you have sold timber before.

Do I need a forestry consultant? →

Do I need a permit to cut timber in South Carolina?

South Carolina requires no state permit and no notification to harvest timber on your own land, and state law exempts timber production and harvesting from erosion and sediment permitting outright, with no conditions attached. Best Management Practices for water quality are non-regulatory here, though the Forestry Commission says landowners are ultimately responsible for complying with them, and the federal Clean Water Act exemptions for forest roads and wetlands do depend on it. A county or city cannot regulate forestry activity on your tract at all if it meets any one of five tests in state law, among them present-use-value taxation, a forest management plan, or managing under the Commission's BMPs. Burning slash is the exception: outside town limits you must notify the Forestry Commission before you light it.

Permits and rules in South Carolina →

What is timber worth in Richland County?

No price series is published for Richland County on its own. South Carolina's latest published stumpage figures (South Carolina Forestry Commission (from Timber Mart-South), Q2 2026) put pine sawtimber at $21.91 per ton. What your own timber brings depends on the species, the size and amount of it, and how far it is from a mill. A timber cruise by a forester settles it.

Forester listings for Richland County come from the South Carolina Forestry Commission consulting forester list, revised 30-Apr-26. The register is updated quarterly.
