About Dean, Youens, & Rosser

Dean, Youens & Rosser is a forestry consulting firm whose site states it has served the Northeast Texas area since 1984 and that its clients include many local and absentee landowners; its staff page says its foresters have experience across Northeast Texas, North Louisiana and South Arkansas, the Ark-La-Tex area, as procurement foresters and timberland managers. The services listed are timber management, timber marketing and appraisals. Management work covers timber management plans based on the owner's goals and an assessment of each tract, appraisals and timber stand analysis used for estate planning, establishing a timber basis or evaluating a purchase, coordination of seedling purchases, planting and site preparation, and herbicide application for seedling release, mid-rotation brush control or chemical site preparation, using contractors listed with the Texas Forest Service as certified vendors. The firm states its primary work is preparing and marketing timber for landowners generally through sealed bid sales to a list of buyers ranging from large companies such as International Paper and Weyerhaeuser to local contractors. It says the majority of its sales are selective thinnings, that volume is estimated by tallying each tree by diameter or by cruising the sale area, and that a minimum bid is established before timber is offered so the landowner does not sell below market value. It also prepares a mutually agreeable sales contract, advises on sale timing against market fluctuations, and supervises harvesting, acting on the owner's behalf and reporting back when the owner cannot be present. Contacts given are Buddy Rosser, Texas Accredited Forester #81, and Alan Youens, Texas Accredited Forester #83; founder R. J. (Jack) Dean became a timber consultant in 1984 and retired in 2015. Can they handle a timber sale?

Selling standing timber properly takes three things. Here's what the state register credits this firm with.

— not listed

works out what your standing timber is worth

— not listed

measures and grades what's actually out there

— not listed

runs the sale and handles the contract

This firm isn't credited with all three, which doesn't make it a worse forester — plenty specialise in management planning, wildlife or wetlands. It does mean that if your goal is to sell timber, you'd likely need someone else for the part that's missing.
