American Dirt and Wood LLC is a family owned logging and forestry business in North Springfield, Vermont. They trace their roots to 1989, when the business started under the name J&S Forest Management Services with a borrowed wood splitter, a pickup truck, and a chain saw. Today Steve Kraft, a licensed VT forester, runs the forestry side, and Ben Kraft handles equipment and operations. Their work starts with a forest management plan, including plans built for Vermont's current use program, and moves into logging from there. They describe themselves as "specializing in selective cutting" to take out the mature and crooked trees and make room for the good ones to grow. What doesn't go to a regular sawmill gets used too: they cut and split green and kiln dried firewood and saw rough lumber from logs a larger mill wouldn't take. They also do excavation and dirt work, from driveways to drainage to site work, which grew out of the equipment they already had for wood operations. They serve Windsor County and the greater Springfield, VT area. On a job, they say they "work closely with landowners to make sure their land is harvested to their satisfaction and the satisfaction of the current use program," and they offer a free estimate for lumber work. No acreage range is spelled out on their pages. This fits a Windsor County landowner who wants one outfit to handle the whole job, from the forestry paperwork through the cutting to hauling off firewood and lumber, rather than hiring separate people for each piece. Long View Forest is in Hartland, Vermont, offering a full set of services to landowners who want to look after their woods. The company works in timber harvesting, tree planting, trails, clearing, and invasive plant control, along with forest management plan preparation, forest inventory and mapping, project planning, and property boundary maintenance. They work with red oak and white pine among other species. For logging, Long View Forest uses a system called "cut-to-length," where trees are cut to log lengths of 8 to 20 feet right in the woods before going out to sawmills or other buyers. They run their own fleet of equipment, felling, limbing, and processing trees, then bringing logs out with forwarders. Where ground is harder to reach, they'll hand-cut and use a skidder instead. They also do timber stand improvement, precommercial thinning, and pruning work for landowners not yet ready for a full harvest. Long View Forest serves Windsor County and works across the greater Connecticut River Valley, including Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Their foresters hold licenses in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts, and they also have NRCS Technical Service Provider status. Founded in 1999, the company has grown from a three-person logging crew into a staff of 40 working across multiple divisions, and is now employee-owned. They manage 35,000 acres of private forestland. This fits a landowner who wants one company that can handle planning, logging, and follow-up woodland work together, rather than hiring separate people for each piece. DCI Corporation Sawmill is a sawmill in South Royalton, Vermont. It is run by DCI, a hardwood furniture maker that has operated since 1975 and is headquartered in Lisbon, New Hampshire, about 60 miles from the mill. DCI's furniture is FSC-certified and is made mostly for colleges and military housing programs. The mill saws ash, red oak, hard and soft maple, and yellow birch. Its band headsaw cuts about 10,000 board feet a day, and the lumber goes to Lisbon for drying and processing. The company runs its work "from standing timber and rough lumber to milling," and carries it on through manufacturing and installation, so the mill is the first step in a process that ends with finished furniture. On the log side, DCI works mostly with "coalitions of private landowners to secure our logs." Dartmouth College is one example. Maple logs cut from the college's own forest were sawn at this mill for dorm furniture. It suits a landowner who already belongs to a group of neighboring woodlot owners and wants logs sawn by a mill that also makes finished furniture. From dcifurn.com, read 8 October 2026.

Questions landowners ask

How many timber buyers and foresters serve Windsor County?

9 businesses are listed for Windsor County: 3 consulting foresters and 6 buyers, loggers and mills. 7 of them have offices in the county.

How much is my timber worth in Windsor County?

Nobody can tell you what your timber is worth without walking it. Value depends on the species, the size and grade of the trees, how thickly they stand, the ground conditions and how easily a logger can reach them. Anyone who quotes you a figure without seeing the land is guessing, and a guess in that direction is rarely in your favour.

Do I need a forestry consultant to sell timber in Windsor County?

You do not have to use one. A consulting forester works for you rather than the buyer, marks the timber, runs a sealed-bid sale and typically charges a percentage of the sale. Research from several state extension services has found that timber sold through a consultant often returns enough more to cover the fee, though results vary by tract and by market. The decision usually turns on the size of the sale and whether you have sold timber before.

What is timber worth in Windsor County?

No price series is published for Windsor County on its own. Vermont's latest published stumpage figures (Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation, 2023) put white ash at $260–$358 per thousand board feet. What your own timber brings depends on the species, the size and amount of it, and how far it is from a mill. A timber cruise by a forester settles it.
