American Dirt and Wood LLC is a family owned logging and forestry business in North Springfield, Vermont. They trace their roots to 1989, when the business started under the name J&S Forest Management Services with a borrowed wood splitter, a pickup truck, and a chain saw. Today Steve Kraft, a licensed VT forester, runs the forestry side, and Ben Kraft handles equipment and operations. Their work starts with a forest management plan, including plans built for Vermont's current use program, and moves into logging from there. They describe themselves as "specializing in selective cutting" to take out the mature and crooked trees and make room for the good ones to grow. What doesn't go to a regular sawmill gets used too: they cut and split green and kiln dried firewood and saw rough lumber from logs a larger mill wouldn't take. They also do excavation and dirt work, from driveways to drainage to site work, which grew out of the equipment they already had for wood operations. They serve Windsor County and the greater Springfield, VT area. On a job, they say they "work closely with landowners to make sure their land is harvested to their satisfaction and the satisfaction of the current use program," and they offer a free estimate for lumber work.
