About R A Yancey Lumber Corporation

R A Yancey Lumber Corporation is a sawmill at 6317 Rockfish Gap Turnpike in Crozet, Virginia. The Yancey family has run it since 1949, when a portable mill was set up on family land along VA Route 250. The mill serves Albemarle County and reaches across Virginia, the Southeast, and Mid-Atlantic. The work starts with buying, sorting and stacking logs. From there the mill saws, debarks, edges and trims, then sorts lumber by size, length and end use. It dries the lumber in its kilns, then planes, grades and packages it. The species is yellow pine, and the logs can run up to 50 feet long. The mill buys about 188,000 tons of yellow pine logs in a typical year. Operators use laser guided machines to read each log and work out the best mix of boards and timbers. Bark, chips, sawdust and shavings are all sold on, so the mill produces zero wood waste. As the company puts it, "Strong markets for lumber keep forests as forests." The family started out logging steep ridges with horses, crosscut saws and axes, and the mill has grown from there. You can reach them at 434-823-4107. It suits a landowner in Albemarle County with yellow pine to sell who wants the logs bought, sawn and dried at one mill.
