Hanneman Forest Products is a family owned and operated business in Mechanicsville, Virginia, with a second mulch yard in Rockville, west of Short Pump. John E. Hanneman runs it with his wife Donna and their two sons. John holds an Environmental Science degree from UVA. The firewood side began in 1992, and the family has run the operation since 1995. Most of what comes through the gate is wood other people need to get rid of. Local tree companies bring in their chopped-up trees, which saves them a disposal fee, and several clearing contractors bring in trailer loads. The company sorts it. Pine goes out as logs for sawmills or as pulpwood for paper. Hardwood logs are split into firewood on their processors. The rest is ground into mulch, colored brown or black, and some wood goes to paper mills or power plants as biomass. "We waste nothing." Firewood is sold in bulk to private homes and wholesale. Mulch is sold wholesale to landscapers and retail to the public, and it can be delivered to most locations in the greater Richmond area. The woodyard at 9130 Barricade Lane in Mechanicsville takes in log length wood, and the business serves Goochland. Hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 4:30pm, at 804-752-4854.
