About Blakely Island Timber Co.
Blakely Island Timber Co. is a sawmill and timberland management operation on Blakely Island, Washington. It manages its own woodlands on the island and sells wood products made from them. "We are not a logging company." Harvesting is a small part of the work, and the lumber comes from trees on the island's own 2,200 acres. The forest work is planned for the long run. The first priority is managing the island's timber land for the future, and several generations are expected before all the management zones reach their goals. Trees are selectively harvested, with salvage of downed, damaged or dying trees coming first. Logs move over a private, managed forest road system to the mill. The species are Douglas Fir, cedar and hemlock. At the mill, lumber is sawn with a thin kerf Woodmizer band saw and dried in a Nyle dehumidification kiln. The products include Island Fir flooring and tongue and groove paneling, cedar and hemlock paneling, shou-sugi-ban paneling and burled maple. The lumber milling operation was recently established, reestablishing a mill that once stood on Thatcher Bay from 1879 to 1942. It suits a landowner who wants a long-term forest plan and wants the wood milled and kiln dried on the same island where it grew. From blakelyislandtimber.com, read 4 October 2026.
