About Vashon Island Forest Stewards

Vashon Island Forest Stewards is a forestry consulting group and sawmill on Vashon Island, Washington. It writes forest management plans and does ecological thinning, tree removal and pruning, invasive species removal, and planting of native trees and plants. It files Washington State FPAs (Forest Practice Applications), which let owners thin their forests legally. It also recommends and oversees logging contractors and hazard tree specialists, and it works with licensed and insured professionals. "We try to work with nature," it says of its approach. The mill saws logs from its own thinning jobs and from salvaged yard and hazard trees. Douglas-fir is the main species, along with red alder, big-leaf maple, Pacific madrone, western red cedar, black locust, cherry, yue, Garry oak, walnut, black walnut, elm and sycamore. It makes dimensional lumber, live-edge slabs, wainscot paneling, flooring, table tops and railings, and it sells some madrone as firewood. The mill yard is open by appointment only, and a new yard is being set up on Beall Road SW. The smallest job on its pages is the 30-acre Agren Park thinning of 2004, a Vashon public park. It has also helped government and public agencies with forestry projects over the last dozen years, and it has worked with dozens of private landowners. It suits a Vashon Island landowner who needs help with a forest plan, a thinning, or the state permit, and who wants the logs milled on the island.
