About Kersten Lumber Co

Kersten Lumber Co is a sawmill in Birnamwood, Wisconsin, right on US-45. They also do their own logging and run their own trucking, so a log doesn't have to wait on an outside hauler to get from your woods to their yard. They make colored mulch for landscaping from their mill byproducts too. The mill traces back to 1938, when Roy Kersten set up a saw mill in Wittenberg. His sons Dick and Phil "Butch" bought it in 1965, and after a fire in 1977 the operation moved to Birnamwood with new equipment. Butch later added dry kilns and the planing and ripping work. On the production side, they say "virtually every speck of every log is utilized," with bark, chips and sawdust going to beauty bark, fuel, and paper fiber, so little goes to waste once your logs arrive. They list Shawano County among the areas they serve, and their forest policy page talks about working around habitat and endangered species concerns when a timber sale is designed. For a landowner with standing timber, the practical draw here is having logging, hauling, and milling under one roof, plus an office with regular weekday hours and a named forester on staff. This one suits a landowner who wants a mill with deep roots in the area and its own logging crew, rather than someone looking to compare several independent buyers for one job.
