Canton, GA

Meriwether Millworks, LLC is a sawmill and kiln business at 329 Puckett Creek Road in Canton, Georgia. They serve Cherokee County. Instead of hauling fallen or cleared trees to the landfill or cutting them for firewood, they mill the logs into boards you can use for a table, floors, siding, or a building on your property. They say they can help you "use your own timber" in a new home or commercial building. Their work includes dimensional lumber cut to the sizes you need, live edge slabs, custom posts and beams, and kiln drying. The kiln is a dehumidification kiln, and it also heats the wood to kill insects and their eggs. They mill and dry hardwoods such as red and white oak, walnut, maple, cherry, and hickory, along with pine and poplar. Hardwoods are air dried for three to six months before going into the kiln. Their portable sawmill service is paused for now. A job starts with a free phone call at 770-740-2684 about your logs. They talk through your goals before any cutting. They then send a proposal based on board feet, which requires the length of each log and its diameter at the small end. Trucking companies they work with can pick up your logs and deliver them. A 50 percent deposit is due based on the estimate, and kiln drying is charged at $0.06 per board foot per day. You can sell some of the milled wood to help pay for their services. This suits a landowner with hardwood or pine logs from a clearing job or a storm who wants the wood back as lumber and has a use for it. From meriwethermillworks.com, read 17 October 2026.

Portable Sawmill Servicemilling customer's logs into usable lumber

Struxure Sawmill is a portable sawmill service run by David Trippe out of Canton, Georgia, in Cherokee County. The owner brings a Wood-Mizer LT-35 hydraulic band sawmill to your land and mills your logs into usable lumber. "I bring the sawmill to your logs." That is the whole idea. All it takes is an open, level area big enough to pull the mill alongside a neat stack of logs. Each log is rolled up to the mill with a cant hook, and the hydraulic cradle lifts it onto the saw. The saw handles logs up to 21 feet long, though 18 feet or less works best. There is no set maximum diameter, and logs around 32 inches are typically milled, depending on their shape. Pricing is by the board foot plus the blades used on the job. Every job is different, so the details are talked through by phone, text, or email before any price is set. There is a $950 minimum for jobs under six hours. The service is milling only. You handle the scrap wood, take the lumber off the mill, and stack it, which lets the sawyer stay at the controls. Hours are Monday through Saturday, dawn to dusk, and the service area is North Central and Northwest Georgia. This suits a landowner who already has logs down and stacked, wants them sawn on site, and is ready to handle the scrap and the stacking. From struxuresawmill.com, read 17 October 2026.

Questions landowners ask

How many timber buyers and foresters serve Cherokee County?

12 businesses are listed for Cherokee County: 0 consulting foresters and 12 buyers, loggers and mills. 11 of them have offices in the county.

How much is my timber worth in Cherokee County?

Nobody can tell you what your timber is worth without walking it. Value depends on the species, the size and grade of the trees, how thickly they stand, the ground conditions and how easily a logger can reach them. University of Georgia Extension publishes an annual timber situation and outlook report with recent quarterly figures, which tells you what the market is doing, not what your tract holds. Anyone who quotes you a figure without seeing the land is guessing, and a guess in that direction is rarely in your favour.

Do I need a forestry consultant to sell timber in Cherokee County?

You do not have to use one. A consulting forester works for you rather than the buyer, marks the timber, runs a sealed-bid sale and typically charges a percentage of the sale. Research from several state extension services has found that timber sold through a consultant often returns enough more to cover the fee, though results vary by tract and by market. The decision usually turns on the size of the sale and whether you have sold timber before.

Do I need a forestry consultant? →

Do I need a permit to cut timber in Georgia?

Georgia has no statewide permit for cutting timber on your own land, and state law forbids a county to require one or to charge a fee for a timber harvest notification. What a county may require is the notification itself: where its ordinance calls for one, the harvester files it before entering the property if possible and no later than 24 hours after entering, and the county may ask for a bond of up to $5,000 against damage to its roads. Not every county has an ordinance, so check with yours before work starts. Georgia's Best Management Practices are not a permit programme, but following them is how a harvest stays clear of the water-quality law that is enforceable.

What is timber worth in Cherokee County?

No price series is published for Cherokee County on its own. Georgia's latest published stumpage figures (University of Georgia Extension, Q3 2025) put mixed hardwood sawtimber at $26–$32 per ton. What your own timber brings depends on the species, the size and amount of it, and how far it is from a mill. A timber cruise by a forester settles it.
