About FOREST LAND IMPROVEMENT

Forest Land Improvement is a forestry consulting firm based in Ossipee, New Hampshire, working with landowners across eastern New Hampshire and Western Maine. It got its start in 1976 and has been at this a long time, originally out of Chocorua Village in Tamworth before the office moved to Ossipee. The work covers most anything a landowner might need done on their woodlot: forest management plans, timber inventories and appraisals, timber sale marking and supervision "as the Landowner's Agent," boundary maintenance, GIS mapping, woods road layout, current use and tree growth tax paperwork, wetlands permitting, timber trespass investigations, tree planting, and conservation easement planning. The business says it is "here to help you get the most out of your property," whether that means timber production, wildlife habitat, recreation, or aesthetics. Beyond private landowners, it also manages town forests for several New Hampshire municipalities, including Conway, Jackson, Madison, Albany, Gilford, Brookfield, Barrington, Moultonborough, and Dover, and has worked for conservation groups such as The Nature Conservancy and the Lakes Region Conservation Trust. The forester running things now, Timothy Nolin, is a Licensed Forester in both New Hampshire and Maine, a Technical Service Provider with NRCS, and a Tree Farm Inspector. He grew up on a working farm in Moultonborough and has been with the company since the mid-1990s. This is a fit for a landowner in that eastern New Hampshire or Western Maine corner who wants someone to handle a timber sale as their agent, sort out tax paperwork, or put together a full management plan rather than just get wood cut. Can they handle a timber sale?

Selling standing timber properly takes three things. Here's what the state register credits this firm with.

— not listed

works out what your standing timber is worth

— not listed

measures and grades what's actually out there

— not listed

runs the sale and handles the contract

This firm isn't credited with all three, which doesn't make it a worse forester — plenty specialise in management planning, wildlife or wetlands. It does mean that if your goal is to sell timber, you'd likely need someone else for the part that's missing.
