Against The Grain
About Against The Grain
Against the Grain is a sawmill in Lebanon, Maine. They started about 5 years ago when they bought a used sawmill, planning to build their own home from wood milled off their own land. A neighbor's hardwood log got them into slabbing, and the business grew from there. What they're known for is "large, live edge slabs," cut from logs they bring in mostly from Maine and New Hampshire, though they'll travel elsewhere in New England to find the right tree. Common species are maple, black walnut, box elder maple, cherry, and pine, all domestic, no exotics. Slabs go through air drying, then kiln drying, then flattening on a CNC machine to take out any cup or twist before they're sold. They also offer finishing work: sanding, filling voids, and applying a protective finish. Beyond slabs, they make live edge shelving, charcuterie boards, serving trays, custom signs, and hand poured candles out of a small retail shop on site. There's no stated minimum tract size, and no timber-buying service area given, so if you're hoping to sell standing timber or have a tract logged, this isn't that. This fits a landowner who has a big old hardwood log, or a few, and wants it turned into a tabletop or shelf rather than sold as timber. From againstthegrain207.com, read 5 October 2026.
