Spearfish Forest Products is a sawmill and timber buying business with local operations in Spearfish, South Dakota, run under the Neiman family of mills. Alongside logging and buying standing timber, they also do consulting forestry, so a landowner can get advice, a sale, and the cutting done through the same outfit. Their work centers on pine, including Ponderosa Pine. They cover ground from Northwest Nebraska to Southeastern Montana, with other operations in Hulett, Wyoming, Montrose, Colorado and Gilchrist, Oregon, each tied to a different part of that territory. The company's first mill opened in 1936 in Upton, Wyoming, and they describe themselves as "4th generation family owned." They hold certification to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative standard. If you're weighing a timber sale, their foresters say they will "provide a free consultation and appraisal of your timber at no charge" before anything moves forward. Their stated approach to the woods themselves, which they call "forest health first," covers thinning for wildfire risk, insect and disease concerns, and wildlife habitat, not just cutting and hauling logs. This fits a landowner with pine timber somewhere between Northwest Nebraska and Southeastern Montana, or near their other yards in Colorado or Oregon, who wants one long-running family company to walk the ground, put a number on the trees, and handle the sale start to finish. Joseph’s Sawmill Company is a small woodworking shop and sawmill in Dallas, South Dakota. Joseph Laprath started it in 2020, when he was 14 years old, after ordering a Norwood LM29 sawmill and setting it up with help from his family. The shop makes finished pieces from walnut, oak, pine and cedar, including cutting boards, tables, decorative items such as coasters and napkin holders, and slabs of wood. Slabs can be cut to any size as long as they are no wider than 34 inches, and they can come with a live edge. Tables are built to fit the buyer, with a choice of legs and wood. Cutting boards come in many shapes and sizes, with a handle or a juice groove if you want one. Joseph also takes custom orders and says he is "open for new ideas." He sells at local Farmers Markets and has sold larger quantities to major businesses in the state. He has also won FFA contests. He is willing to work with anyone who sends an order his way, and orders are usually done in about a month, depending on when they come in. The shop serves Tripp County, and you can call (605) 831-0243. It suits a landowner who wants a finished table, cutting board or slab made from walnut, oak, pine or cedar and can wait about a month for it. From josephsawmill.weebly.com, read 10 October 2026.
Hill's Product Group is a sawmill and lumber business based in Belle Fourche, South Dakota, with its main plant and offices in Whitewood. It manufactures and distributes "quality wood products, treated lumber, rough lumber, pattern stock, pine & spruce boards, and much more." The species it works in are Ponderosa Pine and Engelmann Spruce, and it describes itself as one of the area's largest suppliers of rough sawn lumber and timbers. Its product line runs from treated lumber and fencing to pole barn timbers, laminated columns, foundation lumber and plywood, utility poles, bridge lumber, and livestock bedding made from pine shavings. The Whitewood site has a computer managed wood preservation plant using Koppers treatments, and the Belle Fourche site handles remanufacturing, molding, and distribution. It has weekly route trucks covering South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Northern Colorado, and Western Nebraska, and it has operated since 1985. This is a mill and distribution company that turns timber into finished wood products and ships them across a six-state area, not a business that buys standing timber off a landowner's acreage or walks a woodlot with them. A landowner is better served looking elsewhere for someone to mark trees, cruise a tract, or handle a stumpage sale. This listing fits someone looking for where Ponderosa Pine and Engelmann Spruce end up, not someone trying to sell it standing. From hillspg.com, read 10 October 2026.

Questions landowners ask
How many mills are there in South Dakota?
9 are listed on TimberClear, sourced from the South Dakota forestry register, covering 7 counties between them.
How do I choose between them?
Start local and get more than one. A business based in your county knows the mills and the ground; one registered for all one hundred counties may be three hours away. Every listing here shows how far its office is from the county you are looking at, so "will travel" is never mistaken for "is local".
