About Hands On Sawmill, LLC
Hands On Sawmill, LLC is a sawmill and woodshop in Kingsville, Texas, run by husband and wife Wendy and Gene Williams. They have worked with mesquite since 1991. They run a band mill and a wide slab mill that cuts slabs up to 5 feet wide. They build custom furniture in what they call "Refined Rustic," and they also make fireplace mantles, taxidermy mounts and turned pieces. The main wood is honey mesquite, with some Texas Ebony, anacua, huisache and coma. They will custom saw your logs and sell lumber. Typical 4/4 boards run $12 to $15 a board foot, though they mostly price by how useful a board is. Slabs are priced by the slab, and small pallets of flitches from the outer edges of the logs sell for $10 or $25. They do not buy logs or standing timber. Their view is that a tree is "just firewood until it gets in the hands of an artist." They will come get a tree only if it is exceptionally large, close to Kingsville, and most of its branches are already off. It suits a Kingsville-area landowner with a big mesquite that needs to come down and who wants the wood kept as lumber or furniture rather than sold off as logs.
