L2 Sawmill is a portable sawmill business in Flint, Texas, run by Lance. He sets his mill up on your land and saws your logs into lumber there, so the logs never have to be hauled to a mill. In his words, "I'll come to your place and saw your logs into lumber for you." The business also buys logs now and then and sells some lumber. The mill handles red oak, white oak, post oak, eastern red cedar, southern yellow pine, pecan, hickory, walnut, black cherry, elm, sweetgum, sycamore, birch, cypress, ash and maple. Oak, cedar and pine are the most common. Logs need to be at least 10 inches across the small end, stacked with the small ends together on firm, level ground that the mill can reach. On a mobile job you supply one or two helpers and, on most jobs, a tractor or skid steer. Other services include live-edge slabs, kiln drying of up to 3,500 board feet, and moulder-planer work. Mobile sawing is billed by the hour, not by the board foot. The area covered is East Texas, with Smith County named. A job starts with you sending pictures of the logs. Lance may come out to look at them, and then you agree on a cut list and sign a work agreement before a date is set. Payment in full is due on the spot once the job is complete. The business does not do saw on shares, take down trees or haul logs. It carries general liability, commercial vehicle and workers compensation insurance, and Lance holds a Class A CDL. Most milling runs October through May, since he slows down in the summer heat. This suits a landowner with a pile of logs from their own place who wants them sawn on site and can supply the help and machinery.
