Four questions and you get a ballpark range. No email needed to see it.

Before you take the first offer

A timber buyer's job is to buy your timber as cheaply as they can. A consulting forester works for you — they measure what's standing, tell you what it's worth, and run a competitive sale, usually for a percentage of the price. That makes their interests line up with yours. 24 of the 28 foresters covering Washington County offer the full set — appraisal, cruise, and running the sale itself. Timberlands Unlimited is a forestry consulting business out of Windsor, North Carolina. They've been doing this since 1980, when David L. Jennette Sr. started the company to bring independent forest management help to landowners in Eastern North Carolina and Southeastern Virginia. They handle the full range of what a landowner usually needs: forest management plans and mapping, timber cruising, appraisals, sale preparation and contract administration, reforestation, timber stand improvement, herbicide application, wildlife management, stewardship plans, and forest real estate. On the species side they work with loblolly pine and hardwoods like beech, hickory and oak. Their own staff does the timber cruising, appraisals and sale preparation, while reforestation work is contracted out but supervised by them. "Timberlands can handle any timber sale as the owner directs," whether that means a selective cut, a thinning, or a clearcut. The business carries the credential N.C. Registered Forester #638, and lists a reach across two dozen counties in Eastern North Carolina, including Beaufort, Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Craven, Currituck, Duplin, Edgecombe, Gates, Greene, Halifax, Hertford, Hyde, Jones, Lenoir, Martin, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Pitt, Tyrrell, Washington and Wayne. There's no stated minimum acreage, but their timber sale listings include tracts down to township-level parcels like the Jackson Heirs Tract in Gates County, so small, specific tracts are clearly within what they'll take on. This looks like a fit for a landowner in Eastern North Carolina or Southeastern Virginia who wants a long-standing, staff-run consulting outfit to handle a sale or a management plan from start to finish, rather than a one-person operation. Seven services, and they are the ones that sell timber: management plans and mapping, stand improvement, appraisal, cruise, sale and contract administration, utilization and marketing, wildlife. That's a working forester's list rather than a full-service consultancy. The territory is wide for it — 30 counties taking in most of the coastal plain, from the Albemarle and Dare south through Craven and Onslow, with a reach inland to Franklin and Warren. Seventeen services is a long list by this register's standards, and the mix is unusual: urban forestry sits next to wetland delineation, prescribed burning and logging engineering, backed by membership in the International Society of Arboriculture rather than the usual forestry bodies. Twenty-two counties across the central and northeastern coastal plain, from Wayne and Johnston out to Hyde and Tyrrell. Appraisal, cruising and sale administration are all listed, so a sale can be valued, measured and run to contract. No website is on file.

Twenty-one counties across the northeastern and central coastal plain, from Beaufort and Pitt out through the tidewater. Past that the list stays tight: reforestation, stand improvement, burning, herbicide, wildlife. One forester, no website listed.

Roxobel sits in Bertie County, which puts this firm's office in the middle of the fourteen counties it covers — the Albemarle and the northeastern coastal plain. That is the argument for a firm like this: the same ground, over and over, rather than a territory spread thin. The register lists appraisal, cruising and sale administration, the three that let a firm value a stand and then run a competitive sale on it, plus logging engineering and wildlife management. No website is on file.

Albemarle Land and Timber Services, Inc. is based in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and works with landowners on both timberland and real estate. A Registered Forester and Consulting Forester handle the work, and the company is also a licensed NC Real Estate Corporation. The services cover a lot of ground: forest management plans and mapping, reforestation, timber stand improvement, timber appraisal, timber cruise and volume estimate, timber sale and contract administration, logging engineering, prescribed burning, and more, down to the basics like thinning and painting boundary lines. Species handled include Loblolly Pine, Slash Pine, Long Leaf Pine, hardwood, and Bald Cypress. When it's time to sell, they cruise and appraise the timber, locate the boundaries, and flag streamside zones or other areas that need protection before the sale. They also look at your tax basis in the timber, since that can affect what you owe on the sale. Once a time line is set, they run a sealed bid sale or a contract sale, aiming "to take full advantage of competitive timber markets, thus maximizing your dollar." They say this approach "insures top dollar is paid for the timber." The service area for timber sales and management runs from Eastern North Carolina up through Southern Virginia, with named coverage in Beaufort, Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hertford, Hyde, Martin, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Pitt, Tyrrell, and Washington counties. The forester holds N.C. Registered Forester credential #1045. This fits a landowner in the northeastern North Carolina counties who wants one outfit to handle the forestry side and the paperwork side of a timber sale, including the tax questions that come with it. If your land is in the Albemarle — Currituck, Camden, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Chowan — this is a firm working from inside it, and the coverage carries twenty-nine counties down the coastal plain through Pitt and Lenoir to Onslow and Carteret. The full sale set is on the register: appraisal, cruise, sale administration. Forest taxation and forest real estate round out an eleven-service list. No prescribed burning is listed, which is worth knowing if that's part of what you need. ACF and SAF.

Two registered foresters rather than one, so the firm does not hang on a single person's calendar, covering twenty counties across the Albemarle and the northeastern coastal plain down to the Neuse. Fourteen services, prescribed burning and herbicide application included, and membership in the Association of Consulting Foresters. The firm dates its founding to 1974 and works from Ahoskie across eastern North Carolina, and it states plainly that it is independent of logging companies and sawmills while keeping working relationships with them — the distinction that matters when a landowner is deciding who represents them in a sale. Its timber sales follow a published seven-step process, from reading the stand and the market to choosing the sale type (pay-as-cut, lump-sum, trade, select cut, thinning or clearcut), administering it, monitoring the harvest against N.C. Best Management Practices and replanting afterwards, with reforestation stock named as loblolly, shortleaf and longleaf pine plus hardwood and wildlife species. Plans come in three published kinds — harvest and thinning, burn, and wildlife — with worked examples of each posted on the site, and the firm also does drone aerial photography and GIS mapping in-house and helps landowners apply for FSP, FMI, CRP, EQIP and other NRCS programmes. On the earlier caveat about valuation: the site does advertise appraisals, though framed as real estate work, saying it has brokers and appraisers who handle farmland and timberland of any size, so it is worth asking specifically whether a standing-timber appraisal is included. The firm publishes its own running tallies of 265,000 acres under management and 633 local clients served. As described on efmnc.com, read 22 September 2026.

Rock Springs Forestry, Inc. is a family owned forestry consulting business based in Capron, North Carolina. It has operated since 2000. The work it takes on covers the full run of forest management: forest management plans and mapping, reforestation, timber stand improvement, timber appraisal, timber cruise and volume estimate, timber sale and contract administration, logging engineering, insect, disease and fire protection, prescribed burning, utilization and marketing, herbicide application, wildlife management, and stewardship plans, along with clearcut and thinning or select cut timber sales. Its own description of how a job runs is simple: it gives landowners "advice and recommendations to best meet our clients' objectives," then carries out the services needed to get there. It notes three N.C. Registered Foresters on staff, and says it has planted over 100,000 acres and more than 50,000,000 seedlings for landowners, local, state and federal government, and corporations since 2000. It serves private landowners across Southeastern Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina, including the North Carolina counties of Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Edgecombe, Franklin, Gates, Greene, Halifax, Hertford, Hyde, Martin, Nash, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell, Warren, Washington, Wayne, and Wilson. It describes itself as a family-owned "one-stop shop" handling everything from planting to timber sales. This fits a landowner who wants one firm to plan the work, from planting through a future timber sale, rather than hiring separate people for each step. The register gives Interstate Forest Products forty-five counties — the whole coastal plain from the Virginia line to South Carolina, plus a run up into Franklin, Granville and Warren — and eight services, appraisal and cruising among them but not sale administration. The firm's own site fills that gap. It describes itself as “a forestry consulting company serving Virginia and North Carolina,” trades as Interstate Forest Products LLC, and was founded in 2011 by Chuck Little after sixteen years buying timber for firms including Georgia-Pacific and Coastal Lumber; it says IFP is listed as a consulting forester in both states, with thirty years in these local timber markets. Most of the site is given over to the timber sale, run as a sealed bid: the cruise and appraisal that set a minimum bid never disclosed before the sale, a sale notice sent to buyers with the cruise attached, a sale map showing acres, access and harvest boundaries, three to four weeks for bidders to cruise it, bids read aloud on the day, and a thirty-day close in which the buyer runs the title search, prepares the timber deed and pays in full, timber rights usually running two years. Thinnings are handled differently: sold per ton, treated as a silvicultural treatment rather than a harvest, and awarded on the operator's care — the firm writes it would rather take a few cents less and be left with a good stand. Management plans are the other main line: acreage, ownership, location and objectives; stands divided by age, timber type, soil type and condition; soil maps and photographs; per-stand recommendations and a schedule by year. The site notes an up-to-date plan is required for reforestation cost share, and recommends replanting clearcuts with improved loblolly pine seedlings in late fall or winter, with site prep spray or bedding where needed and longleaf, shortleaf or hardwood alternatives where cost share helps. Another page argues there is no timber price index to watch, and that local mill conditions and logging weather matter more. The site publishes N.C. Registered Forester #1429, N.C. ProLogger certification and N.C. Forestry Association membership. As described on interstateforestproducts.com, read 23 September 2026.

Every county in North Carolina is listed against this firm — all 100 — which puts it in the small group on the register that will work anywhere in the state. The service list is narrow by comparison: ten entries, built tight around the sale itself, with appraisal, cruising and sale and contract administration at the middle and forest taxation, utilization and marketing, urban forestry and stewardship plans around them. Both ACF and SAF memberships are recorded. One registered forester covers that ground, which is worth knowing when you're arranging a visit.

Effectively the eastern two-thirds of the state: sixty-eight counties covering every county on the coastal plain and most of the piedmont, which puts this among the widest-reaching listings on the register. Two registered foresters, the older registration numbered 914. The sale trio is present — appraisal, cruise, contract administration. Surveying is on the service list as well, alongside forest real estate and urban forestry, so a boundary or title question does not need a second firm. On its own site the business trades as Carolina Forestry & Realty, a privately owned professional corporation held by co-owners Keith Brouillard and Rodney Finkbiner and recognised by the N.C. Board of Registration for Foresters as a Professional Forestry Company, working in North Carolina and Virginia and claiming more than 30 years of it. Timber is sold for the landowner on a lump-sum sealed-bid basis, the site saying a sale can draw five to ten bids, after an appraisal done by cruising on larger even stands or by tree count on small or irregular ones. Beyond the sale it lists timberland investment analysis, comprehensive management plans with growth-and-yield and economic projections, pulpwood and residential or development thinnings, disease and pest management, property tax reduction, damage and trespass appraisals and boundary line maintenance. The forestry side sits next to a working rural land brokerage: both owners are licensed brokers and Realtors and the firm publishes its own listings, so a landowner deciding between selling timber and selling the tract can put both questions to the same office. Seven registered foresters is the top of the range on the state register, and it comes attached to eighty-four counties — mountains to the Outer Banks, with very little of North Carolina out of reach. Scale like that means a landowner isn't waiting on one person's calendar, and it means the firm doesn't vanish when someone retires. Nineteen services: wetland delineation, environmental impact statements, forest taxation and urban forestry, alongside the appraisal, cruise and sale-administration combination a competitive timber sale actually runs on. ACF and SAF. The firm trades as GFR Forestry Consultants and dates itself to 1964, and it works from four North Carolina offices — Raleigh, Lillington, Tarboro and Lake Waccamaw — with its published service area running beyond the state line into South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and the Eastern Shore. Its own account of a timber sale runs from stand assessment through a sale announcement and marketing plan to bid management, handled by foresters it says keep current on local buyers, pricing and competition; on the management side it names timber inventory and valuation, timber trespass analysis, forest management planning, GIS mapping, boundary line location and maintenance, pulpwood thinning, pest and disease control, fire protection measures and hunt and lease management. Two services sit outside the usual consulting list: timber basis determination and tax planning for estates and long-held family land, and wood flow and logistics work for landowners or businesses moving product to buyers. It also runs a rural real estate side, brokering timberland, hunting and agricultural tracts through licensed N.C. brokers. As described on gfrforestry.com, read 22 September 2026.

All 100 counties, which only a handful of firms on the state register can claim — wherever the tract sits in North Carolina, this one covers it. Two registered foresters, and the older of the two registrations is number 482, sixteenth-oldest of the 178 on the register. Appraisal, cruise and sale administration are all here, so a landowner can value the stand, measure it and run the sale through to contract in one place. Seventeen services in all, out as far as Christmas tree management, urban forestry and forest taxation. The firm holds Association of Consulting Foresters membership, which is limited to full-time consultants. The firm calls itself family owned and says it has run a consulting forestry business for over 40 years; William H. Lock has retired from full-time forestry work and his son Jonathan C. Barnes, who passed the state forestry exam in 2002, now runs the company as president. Alongside state registration in both North Carolina and Virginia it claims Certified Forester and Certified Arborist credentials, Tree Farm Inspector status and Technical Service Provider approval for NRCS cost-share programs, and it offers work turn-key — timber inventory, marketing, harvest inspection and reforestation through one office — plus timber tax basis estimates, timber trespass reports, growth models for income projections and landowner seminars and field tours. Real estate is the one thing it has pulled back from: the site says that side is now limited to advice and referrals rather than listing and selling land. Its public timber sale notices, bids taken sealed at the office, run from 2010 through 2021 and cover tracts from a few acres up to about 280, clustered in Rockingham, Guilford, Alamance and Caswell counties and over the line into Henry and Pittsylvania counties, Virginia. It works with landowners on the kind of jobs that come with owning timberland, from planning a sale to planting trees back after a harvest. The work on offer covers forest management plans and mapping, reforestation, timber stand improvement, timber appraisal, timber cruise and volume estimates, timber sale and contract administration, insect, disease and fire protection, prescribed burning, forest real estate, recreation management, forest taxation, utilization and marketing, herbicide application, and stewardship plans. Milliken Advisors serves landowners across a long list of North Carolina counties, among them Wake, Mecklenburg, Guilford, Buncombe, and Dare. Then we build a strategy that actually fits your needs." On follow-through, it says "You don't have to worry about juggling contractors or chasing down deadlines." The N.C. Forest Service register carries Dougherty & Dougherty across sixty-three North Carolina counties, foothills through piedmont to coastal plain — but the firm is run from Georgia. The register address is a PO box in Athens, Georgia, and the North Carolina connection is Derek Dougherty's registration, number 1029, rather than a North Carolina office. Trading as Progressive Forestry, the firm's site states that it “manages forest land for private forest landowners in the Southeastern US” with staff it describes as “college-educated, field-trained, and licensed forestry professionals,” and says its experience spans forest management, real estate investment, research and tree breeding. Its timberland management page sets the services out in detail: property and annual inspections, timber inventory reported in tons, cords or thousand board feet by species and product class, timber appraisal, boundary line marking, prescribed understory burning, plantation establishment, seed source selection, mid-rotation work, GIS mapping, growth and yield modelling, harvest scheduling and forest investment analysis. It also answers a question the register leaves open. The register credits the firm with appraisal and cruising but not with sale administration; the site says the firm prepares and oversees the marketing and harvest itself, by negotiation or sealed bid, with lump-sum or per-unit payment and clear-cut, select-cut or thinning harvests, including logging inspections and its own timber security and tracking system. The firm states it is a certified Forest Stewardship Program plan writer in North Carolina. Hardwood is treated as a speciality: the site argues the South's hardwood resource sits “well below its potential” after a history of high-grading, and describes a system of site and stand evaluation aimed at regular production of grade hardwood. Species named across the site include loblolly, longleaf and slash pine, green ash, yellow poplar and eucalyptus. A consultation line covers audits, seedling advice and expert witness work on timber trespass overcuts and failed plantations. No founding year is published. Hunt Forest Resources, LLC is a timber buyer based in Moncure, North Carolina, with forestry consulting, firewood, and wood recycling run alongside it. They buy stumpage, sawlogs, pulpwood, and chip-n-saw timber in pine and hardwood, and they also handle forest management plans and mapping, timber cruise and volume estimates, timber appraisal, timber sale and contract administration, reforestation, timber stand improvement, prescribed burning, herbicide application, insect and fire protection, and wildlife and recreation management. Their registered forester holds N.C. Registered Forester #1438, and the company carries ProLogger and American Tree Farm System (ATFS) standing. They work across a long list of North Carolina counties, from Alamance, Durham, and Wake, through Chatham and Moore, down to Brunswick and New Hanover, and out east to Dare, Hyde, and Beaufort, along with many others. On their own pages they describe offering "a diverse range of services that span the entire lifecycle of forest products, from land and timber management to sustainable harvesting, real estate services, wood products manufacturing and beyond," and say they manage "7,000 acres of timberland annually" across four facilities in the state. This suits a landowner who wants one outfit that can buy the timber, write the management plan, and keep an eye on the ground afterward, rather than stitching together a buyer, a consultant, and a logger separately. Corbett Timber Company is a timber buyer, logger, and forestry consultant based in Wilmington, North Carolina. They buy "every standing timber type", as well as soft hardwood logs for mills and other manufacturing use, and they work with Long leaf pine and Loblolly pine among other species. Their harvest work covers clear cut, row thinning, select thinning, residential thinning, seed tree, shelter wood, swamp logging, whole tree chipping, brush reduction, and fuel chipping. Past jobs include thinning on Long leaf pine and Loblolly pine plantations, and a residential thinning where a chipper was used to clear underbrush. Beyond the harvest itself, they offer timber appraisals, GIS mapping, marketing and merchandising advice, reforestation, and management plans, along with procurement services. Their staff includes Registered Foresters and Certified Tree Farm Inspectors. The business traces its timber brokerage work back to the mid-1980s, building on generations of logging before that. They serve New Hanover County. A minimum of 10 acres applies, stated on their contact page as "Property Location & Size (Minimum 10 acres required)". This fits a landowner with a mixed pine or hardwood tract who wants one company to handle the cut, the paperwork around it, and the replanting after, rather than hiring separate people for each step. The state's own register is broader than this listing has been. NC Forest Service records CBR Logging as buying all hardwood and all softwood species in Washington County, and as dealing in standing timber, sawlogs and pulpwood rather than mixed hardwood alone. A Carolina Loggers Association member directory carries a matching name, though that directory publishes no city or state, so the match is on name alone. No website, Facebook page, BBB file or published review was found, and a federal SAFER keyword search returned no motor-carrier registration under this name.

The federal SAFER database lists H & L Logging as a private interstate carrier under USDOT #1796742, hauling logs, poles, beams and lumber, with its MCS-150 registration last updated in December 2025. By fleet size that is several times the one- and two-truck operations that make up most of the DOT-registered loggers in this corner of the state. A Carolina Loggers Association directory entry matches the name, but the directory lists no location, so the match is unconfirmed. No website, rating or review was found.

The BBB has had a file open on the company since 2010 but has never issued a rating, saying it lacks sufficient information to do so, and the company is not accredited. A timber management firm and a real estate brokerage in one: the company's own site says it buys land as well as standing timber and is 'always looking for mutually profitable transactions that benefit our customers, employees, and the larger environment.' In business since December 1986, it has been a BBB-accredited business since November 2021 and carries an A+ rating. The BBB file describes the work as procuring, merchandising and harvesting timber tracts, buying standing timber and facilitating replanting through the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. About 165 people work at the Plymouth lumber mill, which went 362 consecutive days without a recordable injury in 2024 by Weyerhaeuser's own account of the site. It is a softwood sawmill - an industry mill locator places it on NC Highway 149 north of town - and the NC Forest Service register shows it buying southern yellow pine as sawlogs and as standing timber across eleven eastern counties. The mill is a facility of publicly traded Weyerhaeuser Company, and the state register lists a raw materials manager rather than an owner as the buying contact, so a landowner is selling to a corporate procurement desk.

chips small diameter/pulpwood logsSawmill

J.W. Jones Lumber Co. is a chip mill in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. It takes in small diameter and pulpwood logs and chips them for paper manufacturing. The mill works in both pine and hardwood, turning out chips rather than sawn lumber. As they put it, "the mill chips small diameter/pulpwood logs to make both pine and hardwood chips for use in paper manufacturing." Their listed service area is Pasquotank County. There's no stated minimum tract size, so if you're a landowner with just a handful of acres of small or low-grade timber, this may be worth a call to ask whether your wood fits what they take. There's no description here of how a timber sale would run, what they pay, or whether they buy standing timber at all. This looks like a destination for pulpwood and small diameter logs rather than a full-service outfit that walks a landowner through a sale from marking trees to cutting a check. This fits a landowner who already knows they have pulpwood-grade pine or hardwood and wants a mill that takes that kind of wood, not someone looking for help managing a first timber sale from start to finish. Questions landowners ask

How many timber buyers and foresters serve Washington County?

59 businesses are listed for Washington County: 28 consulting foresters and 31 buyers, loggers and mills. 9 of them have offices in the county.

How much is my timber worth in Washington County?

Nobody can tell you what your timber is worth without walking it. Value depends on the species, the size and grade of the trees, how thickly they stand, the ground conditions and how easily a logger can reach them. North Carolina State Extension publishes quarterly average stumpage prices by region, which tells you what the market is doing, not what your tract holds. Anyone who quotes you a figure without seeing the land is guessing, and a guess in that direction is rarely in your favour.

What stumpage value means →

Do I need a forestry consultant to sell timber in Washington County?

You do not have to use one. A consulting forester works for you rather than the buyer, marks the timber, runs a sealed-bid sale and typically charges a percentage of the sale. Research from several state extension services has found that timber sold through a consultant often returns enough more to cover the fee, though results vary by tract and by market. The decision usually turns on the size of the sale and whether you have sold timber before.

Do I need a forestry consultant? →

Do I need a permit to cut timber in North Carolina?

There is no statewide permit to harvest timber on your own land in North Carolina, but several rules still apply: the Forest Practices Guidelines for water quality, local county and municipal ordinances that can regulate harvesting, and sedimentation rules where a stream is involved. Requirements vary by county, so check with the county before work starts.

Permits and rules in North Carolina →

What is timber worth in Washington County?

No price series is published for Washington County on its own. North Carolina's latest published stumpage figures (NC State Extension, Q2 2026) put oak sawtimber at $48.96 per ton. What your own timber brings depends on the species, the size and amount of it, and how far it is from a mill. A timber cruise by a forester settles it.

Forester listings for Washington County come from the North Carolina Forest Service register, revised 06-Apr-26. The register is updated quarterly.
