Not sure what your timber is worth?
Four questions and you get a ballpark range. No email needed to see it.
Before you take the first offer
A timber buyer's job is to buy your timber as cheaply as they can. A consulting forester works for you — they measure what's standing, tell you what it's worth, and run a competitive sale, usually for a percentage of the price. That makes their interests line up with yours. 55 of the 61 foresters covering Johnston County offer the full set — appraisal, cruise, and running the sale itself. How to decide whether you need one
Consulting Foresters in Johnston County (2)
These 2 foresters have offices right here in Johnston County. A forester works for you, not for the buyer.
Eight services and nothing extra: management plans and mapping, reforestation, stand improvement, appraisal, cruising, sale administration, logging engineering, and utilization and marketing. That is a narrower list than roughly nine in ten firms on the register carry, and pointedly built around getting wood measured, valued and sold. Twenty-one counties, spread from Alamance and Orange in the piedmont east through Wake, Johnston and Nash and down into Sampson, Duplin and Pitt.
Jfordham Timber Appraisals is a consulting forester in Selma, North Carolina. It has a Google Maps business listing in that category. A consulting forester works for the landowner, not the buyer. A listing here is not an endorsement.
Consulting Foresters in Neighboring Counties (59)
Listed on the North Carolina Forest Service register as working Johnston County, from an office elsewhere. Closest first.
Eighteen counties across the southeastern and south-central coastal plain — Sampson, Duplin, Cumberland, Robeson, Bladen, Columbus and Brunswick, reaching north to Johnston, Wake, Wilson and Nash. The essentials for a timber sale are all on the entry: appraisal, cruise, and administration of the sale through to contract. Thirteen services in total, with prescribed burning, herbicide application, wildlife management, recreation and forest taxation rounding it out. No website appears on the register.
A tight cluster of six adjoining counties — Harnett, Cumberland, Hoke, Sampson, Johnston and Wayne, the inner coastal plain around Dunn and Fayetteville. Very few firms on the register work an area this small. The service list is not small at all: fourteen entries, including wetland delineation, environmental impact statements, forest taxation and forest real estate on top of the appraisal, cruise and sale administration a competitive sale needs. Local ground, wide toolkit.
Every service the state's A–U schedule covers is on this record — all twenty, more than 98 percent of firms on the register. So the timber-sale core of appraisal, cruise and sale administration sits alongside surveying, wetland delineation, prescribed burning, Christmas tree management and urban forestry. A landowner with a boundary question or a wet corner can get both answered on the same visit as the cruise. Coverage spans forty counties, from the north-central piedmont down through the sandhills and out to the southeastern coast. Memberships in the Society of American Foresters and the International Society of Arboriculture are recorded; no website is.
Every county in North Carolina is listed against this firm — all 100 — which puts it in the small group on the register that will work anywhere in the state. The service list is narrow by comparison: ten entries, built tight around the sale itself, with appraisal, cruising and sale and contract administration at the middle and forest taxation, utilization and marketing, urban forestry and stewardship plans around them. Both ACF and SAF memberships are recorded. One registered forester covers that ground, which is worth knowing when you're arranging a visit.
Registration number 273 is the sixth-oldest of the 178 registrations on the state register — one of the longest-tenured entries anywhere in this directory. The footprint is small and coherent: thirteen counties across the upper coastal plain, Wilson, Nash, Edgecombe, Pitt, Halifax and Northampton among them. Nine services, clustered on the sale itself — appraisal, cruise and sale administration — with forest taxation and environmental impact statements alongside. SAF member; no website listed.
Effectively the eastern two-thirds of the state: sixty-eight counties covering every county on the coastal plain and most of the piedmont, which puts this among the widest-reaching listings on the register. Two registered foresters, the older registration numbered 914. The sale trio is present — appraisal, cruise, contract administration. Surveying is on the service list as well, alongside forest real estate and urban forestry, so a boundary or title question does not need a second firm. On its own site the business trades as Carolina Forestry & Realty, a privately owned professional corporation held by co-owners Keith Brouillard and Rodney Finkbiner and recognised by the N.C. Board of Registration for Foresters as a Professional Forestry Company, working in North Carolina and Virginia and claiming more than 30 years of it. Timber is sold for the landowner on a lump-sum sealed-bid basis, the site saying a sale can draw five to ten bids, after an appraisal done by cruising on larger even stands or by tree count on small or irregular ones. Beyond the sale it lists timberland investment analysis, comprehensive management plans with growth-and-yield and economic projections, pulpwood and residential or development thinnings, disease and pest management, property tax reduction, damage and trespass appraisals and boundary line maintenance. The forestry side sits next to a working rural land brokerage: both owners are licensed brokers and Realtors and the firm publishes its own listings, so a landowner deciding between selling timber and selling the tract can put both questions to the same office. As described on carolinaforestry.com, read 22 September 2026.
Seven registered foresters is the top of the range on the state register, and it comes attached to eighty-four counties — mountains to the Outer Banks, with very little of North Carolina out of reach. Scale like that means a landowner isn't waiting on one person's calendar, and it means the firm doesn't vanish when someone retires. Nineteen services: wetland delineation, environmental impact statements, forest taxation and urban forestry, alongside the appraisal, cruise and sale-administration combination a competitive timber sale actually runs on. ACF and SAF. The firm trades as GFR Forestry Consultants and dates itself to 1964, and it works from four North Carolina offices — Raleigh, Lillington, Tarboro and Lake Waccamaw — with its published service area running beyond the state line into South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and the Eastern Shore. Its own account of a timber sale runs from stand assessment through a sale announcement and marketing plan to bid management, handled by foresters it says keep current on local buyers, pricing and competition; on the management side it names timber inventory and valuation, timber trespass analysis, forest management planning, GIS mapping, boundary line location and maintenance, pulpwood thinning, pest and disease control, fire protection measures and hunt and lease management. Two services sit outside the usual consulting list: timber basis determination and tax planning for estates and long-held family land, and wood flow and logistics work for landowners or businesses moving product to buyers. It also runs a rural real estate side, brokering timberland, hunting and agricultural tracts through licensed N.C. brokers. As described on gfrforestry.com, read 22 September 2026.
Appraisal, cruising and sale administration are all on this Wilson firm's register entry — the three pieces that let a forester value a stand, measure it, and carry the sale through to contract. Coverage is seventeen counties in the northern and eastern coastal plain, from Franklin and Nash out to Hyde and Washington on the sounds. Two less common additions sit alongside the usual work: forest taxation and environmental impact statements. Registration 1865 is one of the newer numbers on the state register.
True North Forest Management Services is a sole practice run by David P. Halley, listed on the N.C. Forest Service consulting-forester register as North Carolina Registered Forester #1428, with a register entry covering 18 counties across the northern piedmont from Alamance and Orange through Wake and Johnston down to Richmond and Hoke at the edge of the Sandhills, and recording 15 services including timber appraisal, cruising, sale and contract administration, reforestation, timber stand improvement, prescribed burning, forest taxation, herbicide recommendations, wildlife management and stewardship plans. The firm says on its own site that Halley established it after moving to North Carolina in 1999, and describes it as a full service forestry consulting and natural resources management company based in Holly Springs that primarily serves private forest landowners in Wake, Harnett, Chatham, Orange, Durham, Moore, Lee, Vance, Granville, Person, Alamance, Johnston and Franklin counties. It says its clients are mostly small non-industrial private landowners and that it builds a management program around each owner's aims, which it says may be income, value appreciation, improved wildlife habitat or better recreational use of the property; its services are unbundled, the firm says, so a client can take only what is needed or a turnkey program covering every aspect of forest management. Beyond the register list the site names longleaf pine restoration, hardwood and pine management, hunting lease management, boundary line maintenance, cost-share assistance, forest aesthetics and recreational trail enhancements. Halley is a Society of American Foresters Certified Forester (#1982), a Certified Forest Stewardship Plan Contractor and a 2000 graduate of the North Carolina Natural Resources Leadership Institute; the site also lists membership of the North Carolina Tree Farm Committee, the Forest Landowners Association, the Society of American Foresters and the Forest Stewards Guild. The firm invites landowners to arrange a no-obligation first inspection of their timberlands. On tract size the firm addresses landowners in its own words as “whether you own 10 acres or 1,000 acres”, so ten acres is the smallest holding it states it works with. As described on truenorthforestry.biz, read 23 September 2026.
Timber Marketing and Management of the Carolinas, Inc. is the forestry side of a Raleigh practice whose site now carries the TMM Real Estate LLC name, and its forester, Edwin E. Orr, holds N.C. Registered Forester number 477 - the fifteenth-oldest of the 178 registrations on the state register. The service area is broad to match: thirty-nine North Carolina counties running from Caswell and Stokes on the Virginia line, through the Triangle and the sandhills, down to Brunswick and the coast. The company's own account says the business has roots in land sales going back to the early 1980s, when Timber Marketing & Management of the Carolinas Inc. was selling rural farms and timberland properties, and that sales today take in a wider range of property, including transitional, residential development, recreational land and timberland. Its timber sales page says the sale of timber is the most critical time for a landowner to get professional advice, and describes the firm helping an owner decide which trees to sell and when, making intensive inventories, setting sale conditions to protect the property, checking the sale against government regulations, advertising and marketing it, accepting bids or negotiating offers, overseeing preparation of the timber deed, closing, and inspecting the harvesting operation; logging inspections are carried out on every sale it handles. The inventory and appraisals page says cruises are run by plot sampling, strip sampling, point sample or 100 percent marking, from light-intensity sample cruises up to estimates in which every tree is measured and marked. Timberland management plans are built on inventory and growth data, carry timelines and income and expense projections, and draw on experience in natural pine, plantation pine and hardwood, implemented through the firm's own employees and independent contractors. Growth studies and yield projections, reforestation, annual property inspection for absentee owners, boundary line maintenance and mapping complete the list. As described on tmmoc.com, read 23 September 2026.
Surveying and wetland delineation sit on this firm's service list alongside the forestry work, which matters more than it sounds: a boundary question or a wet corner of a tract can be dealt with on the same visit as the cruise. Sixteen counties, most of them in the southeastern coastal plain between Sampson and the lower Cape Fear, with a few reaching north to Wake and Franklin and one as far west as Gaston. Appraisal, cruising and sale administration are all on the register, so the firm can carry a sale from valuation through to contract.
Rudd Forestry, PLLC works out of Raleigh, and the directory records coverage of forty-six counties reaching from the Rockingham and Forsyth line east through the Triangle out to Pitt, Onslow and Pender. The firm says its aim is to help landowners achieve their goals for their forestland, and that it works in North Carolina and Virginia. Its services page describes tailored management plans for forest health and long-term sustainability, timber appraisal covering volume, value and forest health, planning and management of timber sales and harvests, site-specific reforestation, boundary line marking, property security against trespassing, theft and poaching, GIS mapping, hunt lease management, wildlife habitat improvement, forest conservation, outdoor recreation planning, and help buying and selling North Carolina farms and timberland. Owner Thomas Rudd holds a forest management degree from North Carolina State University and states sixteen years as a consulting forester and fourteen as a licensed North Carolina real estate agent, together with arborist certification, a drone certification and standing as a certified tree farm inspector. As described on ruddforestry.com, read 22 September 2026.
The office is in Charlottesville, Virginia, a good way over the state line, but the North Carolina coverage is nothing marginal: 64 counties, wider than 93 percent of firms on the register. That takes in the whole piedmont and coastal plain east of the mountains, from Currituck and Brunswick inland to Surry and Rockingham. Two registered foresters, fifteen services — wetland delineation and environmental impact work sitting alongside the appraisal, cruise and sale-administration set — and ACF membership. The company website is a corporate one and says nothing about any particular North Carolina office or county: it states only that F&W's foresters are located throughout the United States, South America and Europe, and points visitors to a find-your-local-forester map. What it does set out is the firm behind the local contact. F&W says it was founded in 1962 by Eley Frazer and Frank Wetherbee, is headquartered in Albany, Georgia, and manages millions of acres of forestland worldwide; its published timeline runs from regional inventories and forestland appraisals in the 1970s, through growth from 25 employees in two states to 100 in eight states during the 1990s, to expansion into Uruguay and Brazil and the Tree Farm Group certification in the 2000s and the acquisition of Fountains US and UK in 2016. Eight service lines are published — timber sales, property management, field support services for TIMOs and REITs, forest inventory and mapping, forestland accounting, technical and analytical work, real estate, and natural capital. On timber sales specifically the firm describes pre-harvest valuation reporting on species, age and condition, sale layout and marketing to match timber to the best market, then on-site harvest supervision: harvest inspections and reporting, streamside management zone delineation, BMP compliance audits, timber marking, boundary re-marking and road maintenance oversight, with Phase I Environmental Site Assessment available during property transactions. As described on fwforestry.com, read 22 September 2026.
R.B. Klass Forestry Services, based in Cary, North Carolina, is listed as a forestry consultant and also as a timberland broker. The work on offer covers forest management plans and mapping, reforestation, timber stand improvement, timber appraisal, timber cruise and volume estimates, timber sale and contract administration, logging engineering, forest real estate, forest taxation, and utilization and marketing. Its own pages describe building land management plans, "usually covering 10 years or more," based on an analysis of timber stands and what the landowner wants. It works in pine and hardwood, and also pine straw. Thinning work ranges from pre-commercial thinning in young pine stands to commercial pulpwood thinning, crop tree release, and commercial improvement cuts in hardwood and mixed stands, with trees marked by hand depending on the age, size, and stocking of each stand. Reforestation work includes site preparation, seedling selection, and cost share paperwork, and it says it searches out "the best genetically improved seedlings on a tract-by-tract objective basis." It also offers Tree Farm certification, prescribed burning, wildlife habitat work, and hunting lease negotiation. It serves Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Edgecombe, Franklin, Gates, Greene, Halifax, Hertford, Martin, Nash, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Pitt, Warren, Wayne, and Wilson counties. It holds an N.C. Registered Forester credential (provisional), #472, and has been "helping landowners reach their goals since 1983." The smallest job shown on its pages is the Linden Tract on the Lower Little River, a roughly 306 acre property, which gives a sense of the scale it has handled. This suits a landowner with a larger timber tract who wants a full management plan built around it, not just a quick one-off sale. From ncforester.com, read 10 October 2026.
Most of the coastal plain is in range here — Northampton and Halifax in the north, down through the Neuse and Cape Fear country to Brunswick — thirty-four counties in all, well above the register's median of twenty, with Caswell, Person, Lee and Moore attached on the piedmont side. Appraisal, cruise and sale administration are all listed, along with prescribed burning, herbicide application, forest real estate and forest taxation. Registration 578 is among the older on the register, and the firm holds ACF membership, which is limited to full-time consultants.
Two registered foresters and a short, pointed list: management plans, reforestation, stand improvement, the three timber-sale services — and surveying. That last one is uncommon and useful, because a firm that can cruise your timber and also run your lines settles a boundary question on the same visit. Fourteen counties, closely grouped from Wake and Franklin east to Bertie and Wayne.
From Louisburg the coverage runs west to Durham and Orange, south through Wake and Johnston, and east into Edgecombe and Northampton — twenty-one counties straddling the line where the northern piedmont gives way to the coastal plain. The register lists the full sale set: appraisal, cruise, and administration of the sale itself. Logging engineering, herbicide application and stand improvement round it out, a list built around getting timber cut and the ground back into production rather than around consulting extras.
The N.C. Forest Service register lists Grateful Trees and Bees across twelve counties — the Triangle and the ring of counties north and west of it — with sixteen services, appraisal, cruising and timber sale administration among them. The firm's own site describes a more urban practice than that list suggests. GTB calls itself “a different kind of tree company”: a family-operated business co-owned by Jacob Pressley and Jennifer Socey, proud, it says, to call Durham home since its opening in 2013, and serving “clients in Durham, Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Hillsborough and their environs.” It sorts the work into three groups. Urban forestry covers custom climbing and pruning, removals and stump grinding, plantings, health assessments, decay mapping and pruning clinics. Traditional forestry covers stewardship plans, timber sales and harvest compliance, the Present-Use Tax program, regeneration plans, forest inventories and valuations, tree protection plans and watershed protection plans. A third group it calls “the spaces between” holds appraisals and valuations, pre-construction consults, tree protection compliance, species identification tours, firewood delivery and beekeeping referrals. The site states that arboriculture work is performed or overseen by ISA Certified Arborist #SO-5685A, and that “forestry consulting, stewardship plans, and timber sales are provided by North Carolina Registered Forester #1753” — the registration the register already carries. The firm says it has “made the conscious decision to resist the false narrative that says bigger is always better,” runs a single crew, and offers quotes on a published sliding scale; it describes its prescriptions as suiting land “whether that’s one acre, or 100 acres.” Grateful Trees & Bees is a division of 43560 Enterprises, LLC. It closes for breaks in the autumn, winter and spring and for an extended summer hiatus. As described on gratefultreesandbees.com, read 23 September 2026.
One of the oldest registrations in the state register sits behind this firm — number 517, eighteenth-oldest of the 178 listed — and there are two registered foresters here rather than one, which means the practice does not rest on a single person. Fifteen counties, compact: Wake and Franklin east through Nash and Edgecombe to Bertie, Martin and Northampton. Sixteen services in all, with forest taxation, recreation and Christmas tree management alongside the appraisal, cruise and sale administration a timber sale actually turns on.
The register gives Interstate Forest Products forty-five counties — the whole coastal plain from the Virginia line to South Carolina, plus a run up into Franklin, Granville and Warren — and eight services, appraisal and cruising among them but not sale administration. The firm's own site fills that gap. It describes itself as “a forestry consulting company serving Virginia and North Carolina,” trades as Interstate Forest Products LLC, and was founded in 2011 by Chuck Little after sixteen years buying timber for firms including Georgia-Pacific and Coastal Lumber; it says IFP is listed as a consulting forester in both states, with thirty years in these local timber markets. Most of the site is given over to the timber sale, run as a sealed bid: the cruise and appraisal that set a minimum bid never disclosed before the sale, a sale notice sent to buyers with the cruise attached, a sale map showing acres, access and harvest boundaries, three to four weeks for bidders to cruise it, bids read aloud on the day, and a thirty-day close in which the buyer runs the title search, prepares the timber deed and pays in full, timber rights usually running two years. Thinnings are handled differently: sold per ton, treated as a silvicultural treatment rather than a harvest, and awarded on the operator's care — the firm writes it would rather take a few cents less and be left with a good stand. Management plans are the other main line: acreage, ownership, location and objectives; stands divided by age, timber type, soil type and condition; soil maps and photographs; per-stand recommendations and a schedule by year. The site notes an up-to-date plan is required for reforestation cost share, and recommends replanting clearcuts with improved loblolly pine seedlings in late fall or winter, with site prep spray or bedding where needed and longleaf, shortleaf or hardwood alternatives where cost share helps. Another page argues there is no timber price index to watch, and that local mill conditions and logging weather matter more. The site publishes N.C. Registered Forester #1429, N.C. ProLogger certification and N.C. Forestry Association membership. As described on interstateforestproducts.com, read 23 September 2026.
Registration number 208 is the fifth-oldest on the state register, a tenure very few listings can match. Thirty-six counties spread across the central piedmont, the Sandhills and the inner coastal plain, from Rockingham and Caswell on the Virginia line down to Scotland and Robeson. Eleven services, a focused list: appraisal, cruise and sale administration, reforestation, timber stand improvement, herbicide application, forest real estate and stewardship plans.
A piedmont practice with a long reach east — thirty-one counties from Surry and Stokes on the Virginia line, across the Triad and the Triangle, then out through Johnston and Wayne to Wilson, with Robeson and Cumberland picked up to the south. Logging engineering sits on the service list next to the appraisal, cruise and sale administration a sale runs on, which is the difference between marking a stand and working out how to get equipment onto it. Fourteen services in total. The register lists no association membership and no website.
Seven registered foresters — as many as any firm on the state register — and sixty counties covered, which together make this one of the largest consulting operations working in North Carolina. The reach runs from the foothills in Burke and McDowell across the piedmont and the sandhills to the coast at Brunswick, Onslow and Carteret. The full sale package is here: appraisal, cruise, and running the sale through to contract. Nineteen services in all, including prescribed burning, wetland delineation, environmental impact statements and forest taxation — which matter when a timber sale is one piece of a larger land or estate question. The company's own website is a national corporate one rather than a local office page, and it describes a firm of that scale: a corporate office in Charlotte, offices across the Northeast, Southeast, Lake States, Pacific Northwest and Gulf regions, and almost sixty years spent helping landowners manage, sell, buy, improve and enjoy millions of acres — AFM dates itself to 1966, when Bartow S. Shaw, Jr. formed the predecessor firm Bartow Shaw and Associates. It states a size threshold for the land management work in its own words: property of fifteen acres or more. The published service lines run well past timber alone — timber sales and timber management, reforestation and silviculture, forest inventory to establish volumes and values, wildlife services and habitat restoration, environmental services, forest carbon, land surveying, wood flow for navigating fibre supply agreements, farmland management through AFM Ag Services, and forestry and property accounting handled by a dedicated team of about twenty including CPAs on staff, covering property tax administration, audit support and hunt lease administration. Forest certification is offered too: the firm says management operations are conducted under FSC, SFI and ATFS guidelines. As described on americanforestmanagement.com, read 22 September 2026.
Fifty-nine counties from a one-forester office in Beulaville — effectively the whole coastal plain, from the Currituck and Dare marshes south to Brunswick, plus a long reach west through the Triad into Surry and Yadkin. Eighteen services puts this firm near the top of the register for breadth, and two of them are worth noticing: wetland delineation and environmental impact statements, which matter if the tract has bottomland or a permitting question attached to it. Valuation, cruising and sale administration are all covered. No website is listed.
Northeastern North Carolina, from the Albemarle counties of Camden, Currituck and Perquimans down through the Roanoke and Tar river country to Wake and Johnston — twenty-five counties in all. Twelve services, a working forester's list rather than a full-service consultancy: appraisal, cruise and sale administration, reforestation, timber stand improvement, prescribed burning and marketing. Both the Association of Consulting Foresters and the Society of American Foresters are on file, and the ACF admits full-time consultants only.
Based in Tarboro and working twenty-two counties across the northeastern coastal plain and up into the northern piedmont — Bertie, Hertford and Gates on one side, Orange and Alamance on the other. Fifteen services is a broad list, and it covers both halves of a landowner's problem: appraisal, cruising and sale administration for the harvest itself, then prescribed burning, herbicide, wildlife management and stewardship plans for what happens to the ground afterward. Forest taxation is on the entry as well.
Coverage across twenty-seven counties of the coastal plain, from Halifax and Northampton down through the Neuse basin to Onslow and Pender, and east into Hyde, Dare and Tyrrell. The service list is short — management plans, reforestation, stand improvement, appraisal, cruising, sale administration, logging engineering, taxation and marketing — which is the working end of a timber sale rather than a full-service consultancy.
Longleaf and loblolly country — seventeen counties clustered in the southeastern coastal plain and the Cape Fear valley, including Bladen, Columbus, Robeson, Sampson, Pender, Brunswick and New Hanover. The register credits the firm with appraisal, cruising and sale administration, plus prescribed burning, herbicide application, logging engineering and utilization and marketing. Registration 778 places it in the older half of the register. Henderson and McDowell also appear on the county list, well west of everything else.
Membership in the Association of Consulting Foresters is the thing to notice here. ACF takes full-time consultants only, so this is the firm's actual business rather than something done around other work. Thirty-three counties, running from Guilford and Rockingham in the northern piedmont across the Triangle and down through the sandhills into Scotland, Robeson and Pender. Sixteen services, including prescribed burning, forest taxation and urban forestry, and the appraisal, cruise and sale administration set a competitive sale depends on.
One of the thirteen oldest registrations out of the 178 on the North Carolina register — a long time on the state list. Fourteen counties in the Sandhills and southern piedmont, worked out of Aberdeen, and forestry is paired with forest real estate, so a timber sale and a land sale can go through the same shop. Prescribed burning and herbicide application are on the service list as well, both of which come up on the pine ground in this part of the state. Appraisal, cruise and sale administration are all covered.
Seventeen services is a long list by this register's standards, and the mix is unusual: urban forestry sits next to wetland delineation, prescribed burning and logging engineering, backed by membership in the International Society of Arboriculture rather than the usual forestry bodies. Twenty-two counties across the central and northeastern coastal plain, from Wayne and Johnston out to Hyde and Tyrrell. Appraisal, cruising and sale administration are all listed, so a sale can be valued, measured and run to contract. No website is on file.
Surveying, wetland delineation, environmental impact statements, prescribed burning, urban forestry, forest taxation — the register lists twenty services here, as many as any firm on it carries, and appraisal, cruising and sale administration are among them. The territory is thirty-six counties, reaching from the northern piedmont around Durham and Granville east across the coastal plain to Currituck, Dare and Hyde, with a southern arm into Cumberland, Hoke and Robeson.
Forest Land Resource Consultants, PLLC keeps a post office box address in West End, in Moore County, and the directory records coverage across twenty-two counties of the Sandhills and central piedmont, running from Richmond and Scotland north through Randolph and Guilford to Orange and Durham. The firm's own site presents it simply as offering professional forestry services and says it offers a full variety of services to meet any forestry need. Its services page lists timberland sales and acquisitions, timber investment analysis, and timber marketing covering sales, harvest planning, site preparation and reforestation. It also lists timber appraisals and cost basis appraisals, forest management plans, GIS and GPS mapping, burn plans and prescribed burning, herbicide recommendations and application, expert witness testimony, and hunting lease management. The site carries the line Growing a Future for Forestry and invites landowners to use its contact form to discuss their forestry needs. No founding year, staff count or minimum tract size is published anywhere on the site. As described on forestlandrc.com, read 22 September 2026.
Forty-six counties, close to half the state, and nearly all of it east of the piedmont: the Roanoke and Tar drainages, the full northeastern coastal plain, south through Craven and Onslow, out to Dare, Hyde and Tyrrell, with a western reach into Guilford, Alamance and Durham. Very few firms on the register cover that much ground with a single registered forester. Fifteen services, from appraisal, cruise and sale administration through prescribed burning, herbicide work, recreation and urban forestry. No website is listed.
For a tract anywhere between Raleigh and the coast, this firm's whole range covers that corridor: eighteen counties running from Wake and Franklin east through Johnston, Wayne and Lenoir out to Carteret, Pender and New Hanover. Appraisal, cruising and sale administration are all on the entry, which is the combination that lets a firm value a stand, measure it, and run the sale itself. Eleven services in all — a working timber list rather than a broad environmental practice. No website is listed.
Daniel W. Edwards, Consulting Forester P.A. is a forestry consulting and timberland brokerage based in Asheboro, North Carolina. Dan Edwards works with landowners on timber and land matters across North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, with named service counties in North Carolina that include Randolph, Davidson, Forsyth, Guilford, Wake, Chatham, Orange, Durham, Johnston, Moore, Richmond, Robeson, Rowan and others. Species worked with include loblolly pine, longleaf pine, yellow poplar, white oak, hickory, maple and gum. On a timber sale, the approach covers "timber valuation, buyer selection, sale preparation, contract terms, boundary considerations, harvest oversight, and post-harvest recommendations." For land purchases, Dan will "evaluate potential land purchases with regard to timber value, soils, local market values, and potential problems." No stated minimum acreage was found. The smallest job shown is +/- 23 Acres in Davie County, listed for sale. Dan Edwards holds N.C. Registered Forester #612 and is a licensed real estate broker in North Carolina. The business states over 40 years of experience. This fits a landowner in North Carolina, South Carolina or Virginia who wants one person to handle both the timber side and a possible land sale, rather than juggling a forester and a broker separately. From dedwardsforester.com, read 10 October 2026.
Tugwell Consulting Forestry, P.A. is a consulting forestry firm based in Asheboro, North Carolina. They work with landowners, private industry, and government agencies, handling timber inventory and appraisals, timber sales, forest management plans, timber harvest recommendations, thinnings, and reforestation. They also offer real estate services for timberland. Their work covers the full range a landowner might need: forest management plans and mapping, timber cruising and volume estimates, timber sale and contract administration, logging engineering, timber stand improvement, prescribed burning, wetland delineation, and wildlife management, among other services. The firm holds N.C. Registered Forester credential #775, and says it is "home of the 2016-2018 President of the Association of Consulting Foresters of America, Inc." They describe over 35 years of forestry experience. They are based in the center of North Carolina and serve landowners across a long list of counties, including Randolph, Guilford, Davidson, Chatham, Moore, Wake, Montgomery, and Richmond, among many others, and say they also travel into surrounding states to reach clients. Tugwell describes itself as "a privately owned business located in Asheboro, NC specializing in property management and timber investments," working with owners who want to raise property value, grow timber value, build a sustainable asset, or improve wildlife habitat. This fits a landowner anywhere in central North Carolina who wants one firm to handle the whole process, from walking the tract and writing the management plan through to running the timber sale itself, rather than hiring separate people for each step. Land, Farms & Timber, Inc. is based in Lake Waccamaw, North Carolina, and is listed as a forestry consultant, also doing timberland brokerage. Its register entry lists forest management plans and mapping, reforestation, timber stand improvement, timber appraisal, timber cruise and volume estimate, timber sale and contract administration, prescribed burning, forest real estate, recreation management, and utilization and marketing. It states N.C. Registered Forester #586. It serves a long list of North Carolina counties, including Bladen, Columbus, Robeson, Sampson, Duplin, Cumberland, Johnston, Moore, Richmond, Scotland, Stanly, Union, Anson, Montgomery, Chatham, Lee, Harnett, Hoke, Rockingham, Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Burke, Caldwell, Watauga, Wilkes, Beaufort, Carteret, Craven, Dare, Hyde, Jones, Lenoir, New Hanover, Onslow, Pamlico, Pender, Pitt, Tyrrell, and Washington. This fits a landowner in eastern or western North Carolina who wants someone offering both forestry consulting work, such as a timber cruise or a management plan, and help selling forest real estate, under one listing. From advancelandandtimber.com, read 10 October 2026.
All 100 counties, which only a handful of firms on the state register can claim — wherever the tract sits in North Carolina, this one covers it. Two registered foresters, and the older of the two registrations is number 482, sixteenth-oldest of the 178 on the register. Appraisal, cruise and sale administration are all here, so a landowner can value the stand, measure it and run the sale through to contract in one place. Seventeen services in all, out as far as Christmas tree management, urban forestry and forest taxation. The firm holds Association of Consulting Foresters membership, which is limited to full-time consultants. The firm calls itself family owned and says it has run a consulting forestry business for over 40 years; William H. Lock has retired from full-time forestry work and his son Jonathan C. Barnes, who passed the state forestry exam in 2002, now runs the company as president. Alongside state registration in both North Carolina and Virginia it claims Certified Forester and Certified Arborist credentials, Tree Farm Inspector status and Technical Service Provider approval for NRCS cost-share programs, and it offers work turn-key — timber inventory, marketing, harvest inspection and reforestation through one office — plus timber tax basis estimates, timber trespass reports, growth models for income projections and landowner seminars and field tours. Real estate is the one thing it has pulled back from: the site says that side is now limited to advice and referrals rather than listing and selling land. Its public timber sale notices, bids taken sealed at the office, run from 2010 through 2021 and cover tracts from a few acres up to about 280, clustered in Rockingham, Guilford, Alamance and Caswell counties and over the line into Henry and Pittsylvania counties, Virginia. A first consultation is offered free. As described on whlock.com, read 22 September 2026.
Fifty-eight counties is a big footprint — wider than nine out of ten firms on the register — and it stretches from the mountain counties around Watauga and Avery clear across the piedmont into the inner coastal plain at Wayne, Greene and Edgecombe. Two registered foresters, so the work does not stall if one is booked. Appraisal, cruising and sale administration are all listed, and unusually the firm pairs woodland work with urban forestry and an arboriculture credential, which matters if the tract sits on the edge of a growing town.
Kiker Resource Management works out of Wadesboro, at the centre of a thirty-six county North Carolina territory that runs west to Cleveland and Gaston, north through Mecklenburg, Iredell, Durham and Granville, and east across the Sandhills to Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender. Its own site casts the practice wider still, describing work throughout the southeastern United States including Virginia and South Carolina, with a second office at Anderson, South Carolina. The home page sums the firm up as 'forest resource management, wildlife management consulting services, land sales', and it publishes service pages for timber sales, forest and land management, reforestation, prescribed burning, hunting leases, mapping and technical services, wildlife management consulting, forest certification and real estate. The forest and land management page says KRM starts every job by learning the landowner's objectives, whether that is long-term management of high-yield pine plantations, wildlife habitat improvement, a one-time harvest or outdoor recreation, then inventories species composition, stand origin, acreage, site quality and stocking before writing a plan carrying timber value estimates, harvest schedules and cash flow estimates. The reforestation page is the most detailed: KRM reforests an average of 2,500 acres a year for clients, buys about 1.5 million genetically improved seedlings annually, keeps an employee with the planting crews full time for quality control, and puts its herbicide and tree planting work out to bid each year. Its history page dates the practice to June 1978 under a predecessor name, Kiker Forestry and Realty, Inc., with the present LLC formed when Jason Kiker bought the firm in 2007, and counted ten full-time and two part-time employees in 2023, among them eight graduate foresters. The firm also holds an FSC group certificate and takes part in the American Tree Farm System. As described on kikerforestry.com, read 23 September 2026.
Eighteen services puts this listing in the top tenth of the register for breadth: appraisal, cruising and sale administration at the core, then prescribed burning, herbicide application, wetland delineation, forest real estate, taxation and urban forestry layered on top. Coverage runs to twenty-six counties across the southern piedmont and Sandhills, from Mecklenburg east to Johnston and down into Cumberland and Robeson. The Association of Consulting Foresters, which takes full-time consultants only, is listed. The registration itself is a recent one.
Forty-seven counties is wide coverage by any measure — more than double what the median firm on the register carries — and this footprint runs from the Uwharries and the Charlotte-to-Triad piedmont north to the Virginia line and west into Wilkes, Watauga, Ashe and Avery, with a southern arm through the sandhills at Hoke, Scotland and Cumberland. Sixteen services, the complete sale set among them: appraisal, cruise, sale administration. Wetland delineation and urban forestry on the same list is a less common pairing.
Southern Palmetto Environmental Consulting, LLC is based in Myrtle Beach, and is registered as a forestry consultant covering a list of North Carolina counties: Bladen, Brunswick, Chatham, Columbus, Cumberland, Duplin, Harnett, Hoke, Johnston, Lee, Moore, New Hanover, Pender, Richmond, Robeson, Sampson, and Scotland. The forester holds N.C. Registered Forester #1433. The work on offer is broad. On the forestry side it covers forest management plans and mapping, reforestation, timber stand improvement, timber appraisal, timber cruise and volume estimate, timber sale and contract administration, insect, disease and fire protection, prescribed burning, timber harvesting and marketing, site preparation, thinning, and pine straw management and marketing. Beyond timber, it also handles wetland consulting, with assessments, delineations with USACE verification, 404 permitting, mitigation design and implementation, and critical area dock permits, plus endangered species consulting, wildlife management, recreation management, herbicide application, environmental impact statements, stewardship plans, and forest real estate work. In its own words, "SPE works with landowners to provide environmental solutions to common and uncommon issues." There's no stated minimum acreage, so this looks like a fit for a landowner whose needs go beyond a straight timber sale, someone also dealing with wetlands, wildlife, or a protected species question on their land, alongside the usual forest management and harvest work. From southernpalmettoenvironmental.c, read 10 October 2026.
Registration 392 is the tenth-oldest entry on the North Carolina register, about as long a tenure as this directory contains. Coverage runs seventy counties — the entire mountain west, the whole piedmont, and down through the sandhills to the southeastern coast, stopping short only of the northeastern corner. Thirteen services, including appraisal, cruising and sale administration, plus forest taxation, forest real estate and prescribed burning. For a landowner whose sale is tangled up with an estate or a tax question, that last combination is the point.
3D Land Group, Inc. is a forestry and land consulting business run out of Pawleys Island. It works with private landowners as well as forest product companies and timberland investment groups "throughout the Southeast." The work covers full forest management plans and mapping, timber appraisal, timber cruise and volume estimates, timber sale and contract administration, and logging engineering. It also handles reforestation, timber stand improvement, prescribed burning, road construction and maintenance, mulching, and land clearing, plus wetland delineation, wildlife and recreation management, and real estate brokerage for land. Dan Stuckey, the president, brings 30 years in forest management, wood procurement, and land investment, and the firm says it works to achieve "top of the market" pricing for timber sales. Credentials listed include Registered Forester status in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, SAF Certified Forester, and Broker-in-Charge licensing in all three states. The firm is active in the Forestry Association of South Carolina. It has operated since 2018. On the North Carolina side, counties served include Anson, Cabarrus, Catawba, Chatham, Cleveland, Columbus, Cumberland, Duplin, Gaston, Harnett, Hoke, Iredell, Johnston, Lee, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Moore, New Hanover, Pender, Richmond, Robeson, Rutherford, Sampson, Scotland, Stanly, and Union. This fits a landowner who wants more than a timber sale handled, someone thinking about roads, wildlife habitat, conservation, or eventual development alongside the trees, and who wants one firm that can broker the land too. From 3dlandgroup.com, read 10 October 2026.
The office is over the state line in Rock Hill, South Carolina, but the coverage is anything but local — 48 North Carolina counties, from Union and Mecklenburg up through the Triad and out west as far as Madison, Mitchell and Yancey. Appraisal, cruising and sale administration are all recorded, the set needed to run a competitive sale end to end. ACF membership marks this as full-time consulting work. Twelve services in total; no website on the register.
Casey & Company Forestry, PLLC works from 310 E. Main Street in Wilkesboro across the twenty-seven counties on its register entry, reaching from the northwestern mountains and foothills down to Wake, Johnston and the Sandhills, and the project's own research record of the firm's home page notes a stated reach into North Carolina and Virginia. The framing on that home page is about making land work for its owner: exploring options for creating income from land, reducing the taxes paid on it, selling it, or finding land to buy for investment. As North Carolina Registered Foresters, the page says, the firm knows land and timber and manages tens of thousands of acres for private forestland owners, and it offers custom mapping that helps prospective buyers find a property and see its most attractive features. The services page sets out forestry management covering forest taxation, crop tree release thinning, herbicide release assistance, forest maintenance, forest health issues, reforestation assistance, Tree Farm and hunting leases; timber appraisals estimating what standing timber is worth at present market conditions; inventories gathering forest types, timber volumes, tree quality and health, age, size, growth rates and site quality; comprehensive timber sales in which the firm handles every aspect on the owner's behalf while maintaining the environmental integrity of the land; and mapping with affordable site assessments. Real estate is a genuine second arm rather than a sideline, specialising in forestland, rural homesites and local commercial properties, and the site argues that most traditional brokers, used to selling houses, have no idea about the timber value standing on a tract. The published timber sales page shows the scale of tract handled, a sold 53.3-acre Wilkes County sale carrying 720.5 Mbf, about 13.5 Mbf to the acre. As described on caseyandcompany.com, read 23 September 2026.
This firm holds one of the twelve oldest registrations on the North Carolina register, out of 178 — a long stretch on the state list. The office is in Manning, South Carolina, and the North Carolina territory runs twenty-eight counties, from Mecklenburg and Iredell through the Sandhills and down to the Brunswick and New Hanover coast. Fifteen services, including logging engineering, wetland delineation and stewardship plans, and the full sale sequence: value the stand, cruise it, administer the sale. Association of Consulting Foresters membership puts consulting at the center of the business.
Registration 513 sits seventeenth-oldest on the state register, and the firm holds Association of Consulting Foresters membership — ACF admits full-time consultants only, so it signals this is the business rather than a sideline. The office is in Blythewood, South Carolina, but the NC Forest Service register credits sixty-two North Carolina counties: the mountains, effectively the whole piedmont, the sandhills and the southeastern coast. Fourteen services, with appraisal, cruising and sale administration at the center and forest taxation, forest real estate and stewardship planning around them.
Milliken Advisors Inc. is a forestry consulting and timberland brokerage business in Columbia, North Carolina. It works with landowners on the kind of jobs that come with owning timberland, from planning a sale to planting trees back after a harvest. The work on offer covers forest management plans and mapping, reforestation, timber stand improvement, timber appraisal, timber cruise and volume estimates, timber sale and contract administration, insect, disease and fire protection, prescribed burning, forest real estate, recreation management, forest taxation, utilization and marketing, herbicide application, and stewardship plans. The forester holds N.C. Registered Forester credential #1394. Milliken Advisors serves landowners across a long list of North Carolina counties, among them Wake, Mecklenburg, Guilford, Buncombe, and Dare. The business has been working with landowners since 1949. Its own description of how a job runs is plain: "Once we know what you want, we take a good look at your land: its current state, what's happening in the market, and what the future could hold. Then we build a strategy that actually fits your needs." On follow-through, it says "You don't have to worry about juggling contractors or chasing down deadlines." This fits a landowner who wants one firm to handle a timber sale or a management plan from start to finish, rather than piecing the work together themselves. From millikenadvisors.com, read 10 October 2026.
All one hundred counties — one of the few listings on the register that covers the entire state. The registration here is number 8, the second-oldest of the 178 registrations on the register, which is about as long a tenure as North Carolina forestry has to offer. Beyond the sale work of appraisal, cruise and contract administration, this firm surveys, so a boundary question and a timber cruise can be settled on the same visit. Christmas tree management, wetland delineation and environmental impact statements are also listed.
Work concentrated in eastern North Carolina — the inner coastal plain around Greenville, Goldsboro and Kinston, out to Carteret and Pamlico on the sound — sixteen counties in all, run from an office over the line in Dorchester, South Carolina. The register credits the firm with appraisal, cruising and sale administration, the set a competitive timber sale needs, along with reforestation, herbicide application and stewardship planning. It belongs to the Society of American Foresters.
Statewide coverage — all 100 North Carolina counties — from an office in Gainesville, Georgia. Fifteen services are recorded, including the three that make a timber sale work: appraisal, cruising, and sale and contract administration. Prescribed burning, herbicide application, urban forestry and stewardship plans fill out the rest. The register carries this entry under the name US Forest Service, with one N.C. Registered Forester and no website given.
The N.C. Forest Service register carries Dougherty & Dougherty across sixty-three North Carolina counties, foothills through piedmont to coastal plain — but the firm is run from Georgia. The register address is a PO box in Athens, Georgia, and the North Carolina connection is Derek Dougherty's registration, number 1029, rather than a North Carolina office. Trading as Progressive Forestry, the firm's site states that it “manages forest land for private forest landowners in the Southeastern US” with staff it describes as “college-educated, field-trained, and licensed forestry professionals,” and says its experience spans forest management, real estate investment, research and tree breeding. Its timberland management page sets the services out in detail: property and annual inspections, timber inventory reported in tons, cords or thousand board feet by species and product class, timber appraisal, boundary line marking, prescribed understory burning, plantation establishment, seed source selection, mid-rotation work, GIS mapping, growth and yield modelling, harvest scheduling and forest investment analysis. It also answers a question the register leaves open. The register credits the firm with appraisal and cruising but not with sale administration; the site says the firm prepares and oversees the marketing and harvest itself, by negotiation or sealed bid, with lump-sum or per-unit payment and clear-cut, select-cut or thinning harvests, including logging inspections and its own timber security and tracking system. The firm states it is a certified Forest Stewardship Program plan writer in North Carolina. Hardwood is treated as a speciality: the site argues the South's hardwood resource sits “well below its potential” after a history of high-grading, and describes a system of site and stand evaluation aimed at regular production of grade hardwood. Species named across the site include loblolly, longleaf and slash pine, green ash, yellow poplar and eucalyptus. A consultation line covers audits, seedling advice and expert witness work on timber trespass overcuts and failed plantations. No founding year is published. As described on progressiveforestry.com, read 23 September 2026.
Worth reading the service list closely here. The register credits this entry with timber cruising and sale administration but not timber appraisal — so the valuation step most landowners want before going to market isn't among the listed services. What is listed is broad: 48 counties across the northeastern piedmont and most of the coastal plain, plus reforestation, forest real estate, wildlife management and stewardship plans. The office address is Atlanta, Georgia. No website is on file.
Hunt Forest Resources, LLC is a timber buyer based in Moncure, North Carolina, with forestry consulting, firewood, and wood recycling run alongside it. They buy stumpage, sawlogs, pulpwood, and chip-n-saw timber in pine and hardwood, and they also handle forest management plans and mapping, timber cruise and volume estimates, timber appraisal, timber sale and contract administration, reforestation, timber stand improvement, prescribed burning, herbicide application, insect and fire protection, and wildlife and recreation management. Their registered forester holds N.C. Registered Forester #1438, and the company carries ProLogger and American Tree Farm System (ATFS) standing. They work across a long list of North Carolina counties, from Alamance, Durham, and Wake, through Chatham and Moore, down to Brunswick and New Hanover, and out east to Dare, Hyde, and Beaufort, along with many others. On their own pages they describe offering "a diverse range of services that span the entire lifecycle of forest products, from land and timber management to sustainable harvesting, real estate services, wood products manufacturing and beyond," and say they manage "7,000 acres of timberland annually" across four facilities in the state. This suits a landowner who wants one outfit that can buy the timber, write the management plan, and keep an eye on the ground afterward, rather than stitching together a buyer, a consultant, and a logger separately. From huntforestry.com, read 10 October 2026.
Corbett Timber Company is a timber buyer, logger, and forestry consultant based in Wilmington, North Carolina. They buy "every standing timber type", as well as soft hardwood logs for mills and other manufacturing use, and they work with Long leaf pine and Loblolly pine among other species. Their harvest work covers clear cut, row thinning, select thinning, residential thinning, seed tree, shelter wood, swamp logging, whole tree chipping, brush reduction, and fuel chipping. Past jobs include thinning on Long leaf pine and Loblolly pine plantations, and a residential thinning where a chipper was used to clear underbrush. Beyond the harvest itself, they offer timber appraisals, GIS mapping, marketing and merchandising advice, reforestation, and management plans, along with procurement services. Their staff includes Registered Foresters and Certified Tree Farm Inspectors. The business traces its timber brokerage work back to the mid-1980s, building on generations of logging before that. They serve New Hanover County. A minimum of 10 acres applies, stated on their contact page as "Property Location & Size (Minimum 10 acres required)". This fits a landowner with a mixed pine or hardwood tract who wants one company to handle the cut, the paperwork around it, and the replanting after, rather than hiring separate people for each step. From thecorbettcompanies.com, read 10 October 2026.

Frontier Timber Co Inc, also known as Frontier Timber Inc., is a logging business based on Peele Road in Clayton, North Carolina. They've worked in central and eastern North Carolina since 2004. They take on clear-cutting, select cutting, and thinning, handling jobs from small family tracts up to larger timber holdings. The work is run by Blake Lee, a fourth-generation North Carolinian who grew up in Johnston County and returned home to start the company. They say, "We work directly with landowners, taking the time to understand their goals and treat their land with the same care and respect we would our own." Their process starts with a conversation about your property and goals, then an evaluation of the timber, where they work with registered foresters when needed to plan the harvest. Once a job moves forward, they stay on through the cutting itself, and they say "our family stays involved throughout the harvest, keeping communication clear and making sure the job is done right." They serve Johnston County and the surrounding area, including Wake, Harnett, Sampson, Wayne, Nash, Wilson, Franklin, Edgecombe, Greene, Lenoir, Duplin, and Cumberland counties. This fits a landowner in central or eastern North Carolina who wants one family-run crew involved from the first walk of the property through the last day of cutting. From frontiertimber.biz, read 10 October 2026.
Jerry G Williams & Sons Lumber Inc. is a sawmill in Smithfield, North Carolina. They buy standing hardwood and pine timber, and they also run a separate logging crew through a partnering company, JMW Logging and Timber Company, along with contract loggers who cut and supply logs to the mill. They work in Poplar, Ash, Cypress, Red and White Oak, and Southern yellow pine. The mill sits in the Piedmont region of North Carolina and draws its timber base from both the Appalachian and Southern forests. Jerry G Williams & Sons Lumber Inc. lists Johnston County as an area it serves. They say "We buy standing hardwood and pine timber," and their lumber services go on to cover kiln drying, width sorting, NHLA grading, export prep, container loading, and mixed truck loads. They follow State Forestry Best Management Practices, and they support the Pro-Logger education program and the landowner education incentives under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. The company started back in 1986, when Jerry Williams bought a former Union Camp sawmill in Smithfield. It has stayed a family operation since, now run by his grandson Kevin Williams as Vice President overseeing mill operations. This one suits a landowner in or near Johnston County with standing hardwood or pine timber to sell, who also wants a mill that can take the logs all the way through to kiln-dried lumber. From jerrygwilliamslumber.com, read 10 October 2026.
Lampe & Malphrus Lumber Co is a sawmill in Smithfield, North Carolina, over in Johnston County. It takes in logs and runs them through its own mill, turning Southern Yellow Pine into lumber on site at 37 East Peedin Road. The mill works in Southern Yellow Pine and is known for two products in particular: Radius Edge Decking and a line called CarolinaClear®. Its own description of the work is plain: "The logs are processed using state-of-the-art sawmill technology," followed by kiln drying and planing before the lumber goes into covered storage. It carries the grading mark SPIB 443. It serves Johnston County. This isn't a place that comes out to walk your woods or handle a timber sale start to finish. It's a working sawmill that takes logs and makes decking lumber out of them, so it suits a landowner who already has logs cut or trucked and wants to know where Southern Yellow Pine gets milled into decking, rather than someone looking for help marking trees or running a harvest. From lampemalphrus.com, read 10 October 2026.

American Woodyards, LLC is a family owned firewood yard in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Hillsborough Street. It is listed as a firewood and woodyards business, and also under timber buyers and wood recycling. The yard sells kiln dried and green firewood by the pound, year round. The firewood comes from local hardwoods including ash, cherry, hickory, maple, oak, and pecan, with red oak, white oak and hickory named as its main varieties. It also offers custom cut lumber and mulch. The lot is self-load, so customers load their own wood at the yard rather than having it delivered. It serves the Triangle area, naming Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Durham, Chapel Hill, Pittsboro, Wake Forest, Rolesville, Youngsville, Zebulon, Wendell, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, Morrisville, Knightdale, Garner, and Clayton. The business describes itself as "providing the public with quality products since 1994," family owned and family operated, and says much of its wood comes from local job sites or customers' own backyards. This fits a landowner near Raleigh who has logs, scrap wood, or a few backyard trees to bring in or pick firewood up from, rather than someone looking to sell standing timber off a larger tract. From americanwoodyards.com, read 10 October 2026.
Panel and veneer production, not sawn lumber, is what happens at the Corinth Road plant: the Forest Products Locator classifies the facility as “Veneer Plywood Panels” and records it as taking both softwood and hardwood. The Manufactured in North Carolina supplier database lists 256 employees on site and gives the product line as composite panels and mouldings. The plant belongs to ARAUCO, which describes itself as a global forest products manufacturer with more than 50 years of manufacturing experience and distribution to over 3,500 destinations across North America. Its place on this list as a timber buyer comes from the NC Forest Service register.

Federal motor carrier records list D and J Logging Inc with three power units and two drivers, registered as a private property carrier hauling construction cargo rather than a for-hire freight operation. Beyond that filing there is very little on the public record — no website, no reviews, no ratings, no certifications. The NC Forest Service register is the only account of what it buys: standing timber, sawlogs and pulpwood, with a timber cruise offered. Its Raleigh yard shares a street address with American Woodyards, LLC, though no source found confirms a relationship between the two businesses.
Dave Mulhollem Logging, Inc. is a timber buyer in Wendell, North Carolina. It appears in the N.C. Forest Service, Companies that Buy Timber, county lists. Species: All Hardwoods and All Softwoods. Incorporated in April 1974, Elkins Sawmill is run by three officers who all share the family name. The Better Business Bureau rates it A+ — the company is not BBB accredited — and describes the product line as lumber, crossties, mulch and firewood, broader than the stumpage, sawlog and pulpwood purchasing the state register records. Besides the King Road mill in Moncure, the company also operates from an address in Goldston. It appears in the North Carolina Forestry Association's Buyer's Guide under timber buyers, though that guide carries non-member businesses alongside members, so membership should not be assumed.
Enviva Pellets Southampton, LLC is a timber buyer based in Franklin, Virginia, serving North Carolina. It appears in the N.C. Forest Service, Companies that Buy Timber, county lists. Georgia-Pacific Corp/Dudley-Lumber is a mill and timber buyer in Dudley, North Carolina. It's part of Georgia-Pacific, a company founded in Augusta, Georgia, as the Georgia Hardwood Lumber Company, a hardwood lumber wholesaler. For landowners in Wayne County, the Dudley location buys standing timber, sawlogs, and chip-n-saw logs, working in Southern Yellow Pine. If you've got pine on your land in that area, this is the kind of outfit that would be in the market for it. Georgia-Pacific as a whole is a large manufacturer with plants across the country, making everything from building products to paper goods, so the Dudley mill sits inside a much bigger operation. The company's stewardship pages talk about "good science-based protection, restoration, enhancement, sequestration, and recovery practices" as part of how it approaches forestry. Twelve power units and nine drivers put this among the larger logging outfits working out of Plymouth. The federal SAFER database lists H & L Logging as a private interstate carrier under USDOT #1796742, hauling logs, poles, beams and lumber, with its MCS-150 registration last updated in December 2025. By fleet size that is several times the one- and two-truck operations that make up most of the DOT-registered loggers in this corner of the state. A Carolina Loggers Association directory entry matches the name, but the directory lists no location, so the match is unconfirmed. No website, rating or review was found.

Louisburg Hardwood, Inc. works out of Warrenton, North Carolina. They buy timber, run a sawmill, and also produce firewood and pallets, so if you have trees to sell they can buy standing timber (stumpage) and handle sawlogs, pulpwood, and chip-n-saw too. They work in Red Oak, White Oak, Hickory, Ash, Yellow-Poplar, and Southern Yellow Pine. Their people hold NC ProLogger certification and USDA Heat-Treat Certification, which matters if you care about mill and transport standards for whatever comes off your land. They cover Franklin, Vance, Warren, Granville, Halifax, Wake, Nash, Johnston, Person, Northampton, and Edgecombe counties, so a tract anywhere in that stretch of North Carolina is in their range. The company has "been in the timber, sawmill, firewood, and environmental silt fence stake business for many years," working alongside related sawmill and pallet operations under the same ownership. Their firewood work is described as being "cut uniformly, cleaned thoroughly and processed before it is available for sale," which gives a sense of how they handle wood once it's down. This fits a landowner in that part of North Carolina who wants one outfit that can buy the standing timber, mill it, and also take the leftover wood into firewood or pallet stock, rather than dealing with separate buyers for each step. It sources custom cut timbers from sustainably managed forests, air dries them, and cuts them with traditional tools plus CAD and CNC technology. Questions landowners ask
How many timber buyers and foresters serve Johnston County?
107 businesses are listed for Johnston County: 61 consulting foresters and 46 buyers, loggers and mills. 12 of them have offices in the county.
How much is my timber worth in Johnston County?
Nobody can tell you what your timber is worth without walking it. Value depends on the species, the size and grade of the trees, how thickly they stand, the ground conditions and how easily a logger can reach them. North Carolina State Extension publishes quarterly average stumpage prices by region, which tells you what the market is doing, not what your tract holds. Anyone who quotes you a figure without seeing the land is guessing, and a guess in that direction is rarely in your favour.
What stumpage value means →Do I need a forestry consultant to sell timber in Johnston County?
You do not have to use one. A consulting forester works for you rather than the buyer, marks the timber, runs a sealed-bid sale and typically charges a percentage of the sale. Research from several state extension services has found that timber sold through a consultant often returns enough more to cover the fee, though results vary by tract and by market. The decision usually turns on the size of the sale and whether you have sold timber before.
Do I need a forestry consultant? →Do I need a permit to cut timber in North Carolina?
There is no statewide permit to harvest timber on your own land in North Carolina, but several rules still apply: the Forest Practices Guidelines for water quality, local county and municipal ordinances that can regulate harvesting, and sedimentation rules where a stream is involved. Requirements vary by county, so check with the county before work starts.
Permits and rules in North Carolina →What is timber worth in Johnston County?
No price series is published for Johnston County on its own. North Carolina's latest published stumpage figures (NC State Extension, Q2 2026) put oak sawtimber at $48.96 per ton. What your own timber brings depends on the species, the size and amount of it, and how far it is from a mill. A timber cruise by a forester settles it.
Forester listings for Johnston County come from the North Carolina Forest Service register, revised 06-Apr-26. The register is updated quarterly.
